Summer Rains End Fire Pains Though the summer rains seemed to take forever to get here, they are quickly ending the threat of wildfire season.

Tropical Storm Alberto and a few tropical waves ushered in the regular thunderstorms. The threat of wildfires usually eases by the middle of June instead of early July. Though it's now rainy season, residents of Tampa and unincorporated Hillsborough County remain under watering restrictions that limit lawn sprinkling to once a week. Similar restrictions for Hillsborough County are set to expire early next month. The 2006 fire season started under the driest conditions the state had faced in five years.

NationWorld, Page 7 Hew Lights Could Lighten Bills The government wants scientists and engineers to pull the plug on the ordinary light bulb. Incandescent bulbs are energy-wasters, turning only 5 percent of consumed electricity into light.

Fluorescent lamps are only a bit more efficient. The Department of Energy is seeking to replace the ever-present bulb with "solid state lighting" devices that attain 50 percent efficiency, which is 10 times better than ordinary bulbs and twice as good as fluorescents. The lighting systems consist of light emitting diodes, or LEDs, such as those found in digital clocks and phones, traffic signals and stage lights. LEDs produce little heat, use no hazardous materials and last for thousands of hours, even years. The lights could save $30 billion a year in electric bills.
