Stuntx NEW YORK (AP) Tha sourest reaction to tha Washington money agreements has coma forth from Dr. Franz Pick, tha barbed, Austrian-born currency expert who thinks the money world is one big conspiracy to rook the people. Yet Pick is not a crank-be is a highly respected and highly paid economist. Ha serves as consultant to many companies, advising them on ways to keep their overseas currency safe from expropriation, needless taxes or devaluation.

It is Just that he had little faith in government bonds and an unlimited faith In gold. Quite a few observers, although they don't go as far as Pick, agree that he is not far wrong in some of his dicta. "If you think you can shake people's faith in gold," raid one, "just offer a man a choice between a $10 bill and a $10. gold piece' i Even soma conventional bankers think along with Pick on the question of the monetary agreement which President Nixon called "the most significant economic agreement in the history of the world." "Read the fine print," one banker advised a reporter. Sure enough, it turned out that the gold revaluation announced previously was conditional, to happen only if the United States got a trade agreement in return.

And there was also the question of the value of the Canadian dollar, which the communique plastered over when the finance ministers' of the Group of 10 could not agree. "The agreement," Pick thundered in a recent statement, "was nothing more than a defeat of American currency diplomacy and a fraudulent state bankruptcy, covered with Mil town words such as alignment, monetary peace, cooperation of Ctral Banks and a lot of technical They were words, he insists, which "the man In the street and most financial writers do not understand." Along with bis rhetoric, Pick brings out some new factors in tha international money system. He estimates the pool of Eurodollars, which are perhaps the real villain In the recent money drama, as $73 billion. This is 48 per cent higher than most recent estimates, which put the total at some $50 billion. Even the smaller figure is about as much as the total currency in circulation in the United States.

This, he claims, means that "America punished the countries which upvalued they have to reduce the value of their gold stocks in terms of national currency and will lose hundreds of millions of minidollars on the billions of dollars they had to buy in order to avoid an international breakdown of currency markets." In his view, the solution reached In Washington was only short term. I'The outlook," he said, "is not good. The present currency honeymoon cannot last long, because the devaluation was too small. "The Eurodollar remains inconvertible and a constant menace to the solvency of the United States. The trade, as well as the payments deficit, will not disappear.

It may even get "Forthcoming foreign exchange controls may create additional problems beginning in February, 1972, and a new wave of price rises will begin after the first three months of the devalued dollar's reign." Maybe things will not be all that bad. We must all hope so. I Big Consp i racy DR. FRANZ PICK Indicators Show Gain Nation Economic iiiiiimiiiiiiu Kearney Trecker Trim Production Briefs MRS. WASHINGTON (AP) The government's list of 'leading economic indicators which tend to foreshadow future movements in the economy showed a slight gain in November, the Commerce Department said today.

The index of leading business indicators advanced by two-tenths of one per cent after a strong 1.1 per cent Increase In October. Into a sharply expansionist stage as predicted by the Nixon administration. But a Commerce Department economist, Asst. Secretary Harold C. Passer, said the slight gain last month continues the increase in the indicators' that has been under way for more than a year.

Expansion (Forecast "Thus, the leading indica better than half the average for the six-year period 1964-69. Machine-tool shipments this year fell to less than $1 billion from $1.44 billion in 1970, the lowest shipment total since $395.8 million in 1963. Kearney Trecker posted a loss of in its 1971 fiscal year ended Oct. 3. Besides building permits, indicators for Industrial materi- als prices and stock prices dropped in November, the de-' partment said.

Prices of common stocks actually dropped. 4.8 per cent, according to the report, after a 2.1 per cent decline In October. But Passer said prices of common stocks have rebounded since Thanksgiving and should recover in December. the months ahead," Passer said. Of the eight indicators available in November, five were up and three were down, with the strongest gains recorded in the length of tha average work week and new factory orders for durable goods.

The increase brought the composite index of leading indicators to 128.5 per cent of the 1967 base year. The sharpest decline came in the indicator for housing permits, which dropped 9.7 per cent after a 14.4 per cent increase in October. Passer said the decline in housing permits was "not unexpected." The shutdown was scheduled four months ago, he noted. At Gorton Machine, Monday, Thursday and Friday of this week are paid holidays, so the cutback here amounts to a two-day, unpaid layoff for about 330 workers, plant and office. At the Kearney Trecker plant at Milwaukee, Friday is a paid holiday, so the layoff there, which involves about 1,200 employes, covers four days Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Gunderson said. Kearney Trecker and the nation's other machine fool builders are ending their second straight year of severely depressed orders, reflecting a continuing reluctance on the part of manufacturers to buy production equipment.
