Below, Mattel's Orion Video games popular By DARYLL CARLSON Dispatch Correspondent Video games and home video recorders and cameras were the hottest items up for sale at the International Summer Consumer Electronics Show, held this week in Chicago. More than 50,000 people were expected to attend the four-day show, which wound up at midweek.

There were 821 exhibits, taking up net square feet of space and the total facilities of McCormick Place, McCormick Inn and the Pick-Congress Hotel. THE BIG news in video games was that Atari, the No. 1 seller of video games, announced 20 new games will be on the market by fall. Fairchild Corp. introduced seven new games, and Bally known for its slot machines and pinball machines, introduced a home arcade center.

The first video game was introduced in 1972. It was called "Odyssey," and contained simple "ball and paddle" games. Since then, video games have progressed to more complex racing, warfare, and target games. THE MORE sophisticated games employ microprocessors, or minicomputers, and are "programmed" through the use of special cartridges. These provide an almost endless variety of entertainment and challenge, depending upon the cartridge used.

Game programs are available for blackjack, full color doodling on the TV screen, and arcade games, plus an increasing number of educational quiz games at various levels of complexity. With the development of more sophisticated game programs and games with keyboards and other special input devices, it's difficult to tell where the video game leaves off and the home computer begins.
