All-Star Facts Mutiny goalkeeper Scott Garlick's soccer career has gone from Ireland to today's Major League Soccer All-Star game at Columbus, Ohio. By STEVE SPENCER Tribune correspondent Aside from squeezing wheat grass juice shots at a Phoenix smoothie shop to make ends meet Mutiny goalkeeper Scott Garlick's difficult path to Major League Soccer is typical of many of the league's veteran American players. And when he takes the field today for his first MLS All-Star game, it will be appreciated in more ways than one. When Garlick, 28, left the college ranks, there was no first-division outdoor soccer league in the United States. Only those 1980s and early '90s collegians intensely dedicated to being a pro were able to realize their dream.

He was one of them. "I was a soccer nut case," Garlick said. "After college, I wrote letters to numerous teams in Europe looking for a trial. I was planning to travel there anyway and I was determined to get a chance." With the help of a friend, Garlick was given a look by Waterford of the Ireland First Division. "When I got to Ireland, I think the coach was a little surprised to see me, like he didn't expect me to show up," Garlick said.

"I remember he asked me, 'Can you play?" Garlick spent two successful seasons with Water-ford before homesickness and work-permit frustrations brought him home in 1996 the inaugural season of Major League Soccer. It was an experience he always will treasure. "I still go back there once a year to visit friends," Garlick said. "I played for around $200 per week, but it was enough to live OK there with my bicycle and apartment" Garlick joined the Carolina Dynamo of the United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues hoping to get a chance in MLS. "Carolina was really a first-class organization.

We had good players and framing facilities," Garlick said. "But the pay is what put me in the smoothie shop and other jobs." Garlick's chance in MLS came just prior to the 1997 season, when defending champion D.C. United goalkeeper Mark Simpson went down with an injury. Former United coach and current U.S. National Team coach Bruce Arena brought Garlick in on loan from Carolina.

He earned the starting job and started the first three games of 1997 for United all victories. Then, mysteriously, Garlick was waived. "I really didn't know why," Garlick said. "Bruce isn't the best communicator and, quite frankly, I wasn't with him." He was recalled by United just four weeks later and quickly signed his first MLS contract Garlick earned the starting job again and was in the net for United's second MLS Cup championship in 1997. He also started in United's historic 2-0 Interamerican Cup victory against famed Brazilian club Vasco De Gama in December, 1998.

That win earned the club the title "Champion of the Americas." Despite his key role and salary near the $24,000 MLS minimum, United traded Garlick to the Mutiny for draft picks, in January 1999. What: Fifth annual MLS All-Star game WhenWhere: 3:30 p.m., Columbus Ohio TV: ABC, Channel 28 Last game: West 6, East 4 (July 17, 1999 at San Diego) Injury report: East Ted Chronopoulos (New England), Daniel Hernandez (MetroStars) are out. West GK Kevin Hartmanh (Los Angeles) is out. Notes: Mutiny midfielders Carlos Valderrama and Steve Ralston will start for the East. It will be Valderra-ma's fifth consecutive All-Star start and Ralston's first.

MLS All-Star games are known for offense; 31 goals were scored in the first four contests. On Friday, Columbus Crew Stadium was a few hundred tickets short of a sellout. Crew defender Mike Clark is replacing Chronopoulos. Chicago Fire goalkeeper Zach Thornton is replacing Hartmann. Hernandez will not be replaced, so the 20-man East squad will be one short.

TENNIS Williams outlasts Frazier Venus Williams outlasted Amy Frazier, 6-7 (7-5), 64, 7-6 (7-5) in the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West tournament at Stanford, Calif. The victory put the second-seeded Williams into, the semifinals against the winner of a late match between Anna Kourni-kova and Sandrine Testud. Fourth-seeded Monica Seles also advanced into the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Cara Black. The lOth-seeded Frazier forced Williams, the reigning Wimbledon champion, to play more than 2lA hours before she slammed home the tiebreaking forehand. Williams had 18 aces and 20 double-faults.

Michael Chang rallied from a 3-5 deficit and faced two set points in the tiebreaker to beat fifth-seeded Wayne Ferreira 6-3, 7-6 (7) at the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles. Alex Corretja beat ninth-seeded Mariano Zabaleta 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the $700,000 Generali Open at Ktz-buehel, Austria. Agustin Called reached his first career ATP tournament semifinal, defeating Alberto Martin 7-5, 4-6, 64. COLLEGES Changes at Hawaii prompt criticism The University of Hawaii is being criticized by gay rights advocates for its decision to change the nickname and logo of the school's football team. Hawaii officials announced they were changing the team's nickname from the Rainbow Warriors to the Warriors and replacing the 77-year-old rainbow logo.

Athletic director Hugh Yo-shida then admitted the decision partly stemmed from concerns about how the rainbow has become a symbol of gay pride and acceptance. Already the highest-paid public employee in the state, Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson received a $40,000 a year raise Friday. Olson, whose team won the men's NCAA title in 1997, is signed through 2005. He is earning $613,475 per year. BASKETBALL Atkins will leave Magic for Pistons Chucky Atkins said he plans to join the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, the first day NBA free agents are permitted to sign contracts.

The 25-year-old former University of South Florida guard was a rookie with the Magic last season. Atkins' deal reportedly is worth $8 million over four years. Meanwhile, the Magic reportedly are discussing a sign-and-trade deal that would send free agents Bo Outlaw and Ron Steve Spencer Mutiny management is clear that Garlick is vital to their future. Prior to the start of the 2000 season, Garlick was rewarded with a significant pay increase. The raise, along with his All-Star appearance bonus, will come in handy after his December wedding to Mutiny trainer Holly Karol.

As for the traditionally high-scoring All-Star game -a goalkeeper's nightmare Garlick will be focusing on enjoying the experience. 'Two years ago, I would have tried to prove I belong in the game," Garlick said. "But I'm just going to try to enjoy it Your career is too short and fragile to not enjoy a game like this." HOCKEY Red Wings sign Osgood to new deal Goalie Chris Osgood signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings, who avoided a salary arbitration hearing that was days away. Osgood was the top goalie on the Red Wings' 1998 Stanley Cup championship team. Center Rob Niedermayer signed a $2.1 million qualifying offer with the Florida Panthers instead of becoming a restricted free agent Former Lightning players Rob Zamuner, Cory Cross, Rudy Poeschek and Alex Seliva-nov are participating in a hockey camp at the Tampa Bay Skating Academy in Oldsmar this week.

The camp opens today and runs through Wednesday. Children ages 8-13 are invited to attend from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. The rink is located off Tampa Road in Olds-mar. For information, call (727) 434-0599.

ETC. Track: Maurice Greene, the world 100 champion, was forced to pull out of next week's British Grand Prix because of a strained left hamstring. Sign-ings: Former Gaither High School outfielder Matt Fisherman, who led the Cowboys in hitting as a junior and senior, has signed with the University of Florida. An All-Western Conference selection the past two years, Fisherman, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, hit .416 as a senior and earned the school's Gold Glove award as its top fielder. Soccer: The sport's ruling body stands by the vote awarding the 2006 World Cup to Germany even though it is considering changing the format for future votes.

South Africa has appealed the 12-11 vote to hold the 2006 tournament in Germany. Boxing: David Izon is signed to fight Mike Tyson, but there are several important details to be worked out before he gets into the ring with the former undisputed heavyweight champion. The Palace at Auburn Hills, is the leading candidate as the fight site, and the date would be Sept 8 or Sept 9. Tribune staff, wires requested a time change so the network could provide prime-time coverage of the opening night of the convention. Miller, host of HBO's "Dennis Miller Live," along with other newcomers Dan Fouts, Eric Dick-erson and Melissa Stark, will join veteran play-by-play announcer Al Michaels on this year's telecasts.

Fouts and Stark weren't controversial selections. Fouts has been the No. 2 man on ABC's college football coverage and Stark is a solid reporter at ESPN. Miller and Dickerson are different matters. Dickerson was as much a surprise as Miller.

He lasted only half a season last year as a college football analyst on Fox Sports Net, but ABC reportedly was impressed by his Hall of Fame induction speech last year. He and Stark will work the sidelines. As for Miller, who really knows what will happen? Obviously, the rants and profane language he uses on his HBO show won't work on "MNF." If reports that he really knows football are true, hell be a welcome addition to the team. If not, producer Don Ohlmeyer may be run out of the business. Miller won't get to be at full speed Monday night The broadcast will have an abbreviated half-time show because of reports from the convention.

And like the players, this is just an exhibition game. America's team? It used to be the Dallas Cowboys. Then the San Francisco 49ers. Now, the Buccaneers? A radio station in Las Vegas has signed on as a Buccaneers' Radio Network affiliate. "There is a lot of excitement about Bucs football in Las Vegas," WQYK, 99.5 FM and 1010 AM, program director Jeff Ryan said.

"And not just from the betters." Ryan said a couple days after the deal was done with the station, which used to carry Cowboys and 49ers games, another in Las Vegas called about acquiring rights to Bucs games. It's about time: Is the NFL finally getting smart? Probably not But it did make a smart decision this week when its broadcast committee announced that home-team markets will be allowed to see three games on Sunday afternoons. Before, when the Bucs were playing at home, only two games were allowed to be shown, regardless of whether the game was sold out Now, for example, if the Bucs are playing at home at 1 p.m. on Fox, CBS and Fox will be allowed to air games at 4. In the past only CBS would have been allowed to Florida's Best Golf Value Mon-Fri Tues.

The next move is to eliminate the blackout rule. In this day of outrageous ticket prices and personal seat licenses, if impossible for some people to see games.

Where are the Lighting? ESPN announced its 2000-01 National Hockey League television schedule this week. Between ESPN and ESPN2, 124 regular-season games will be shown. But don't look for the Lightning. They are one of three teams not included on the schedule; the others are Ottawa and expansion Columbus. I don't expect the Bolts to be on 23 times like Philadelphia, but you would think ESPN and the NHL would want to get every team on at least once.
