8 BRANDON SUNDAY, AUGUST 13, 2000 THE TAMPA TRIBUNE-TIMES http:tampatrib.com Terror-able actors wanted at Busch Gardens Classes More 'i A jf- j. i J-. I 'I I i I Xv JASON BEHNKENTribune photos Lamount Davis, left, and a group of actors show Busch Gardens staff members their scariest poses during an audition Aug. 2. The park wants at least 70 actors for Its Creature Crew.

Below, Scott Swenson, dressed as alter-ego Dr. Llvlngsdoom, shows the actors what the park's T.R.I.B.E. members wants to see from Its creatures. It's not your typical song-and-dance audition: These actors are clawing and screaming (and moaning and creeping) for jobs. By JILL M.

REVELLE of The Tampa Tribune Double, double, toil and trouble. Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Monsters, freaks and fiends have provided some of the most memorable dramatic roles in history: Dracula, Macbeth's witches, Frankenstein. That's not quite what's going on at Busch Gardens, though. Picture, if you dare, a lucky 13 actors scrabbling about on the floor, pretending to stack books on an imaginary bookshelf.

The twist is that they're to complete the task as if they were hideous beasts. Hoping to land a part with the park's first ever Creature Crew, Jessica Thomas begins snarling and drooling, stopping to chew her own foot and arm between pantomimed gestures. "Creature Crew is the ghouls, creeps and nasties," said Alan Richard Talbot, the area supervisor of entertainment "Well be in and among the crowds that flock to the Gardens." The crew of 70-plus wandering witches, mummies, monsters and zombies will be the focal point of the Howl-O-Scream celebration haunting Busch Gardens during the month of October. Built on the skeleton of last year's Spooky Safari event, Howl-O-Scream is the Rosemary's Baby of T.RI.B.E. (To Realize Innovative Busch Experiences).

This three-person think tank has been sequestered from the rest of the staff for months while conceptualizing the project "Last year was a test" said T.R.I.B.E. member Scott Swenson. This year is the big event" Howl-O-Scream is billed as a family event, and the Land of the Dragons has been dedicated to the tiniest of the trick-or-treaters. There will be a pumpkin patch and face painting "for the little boils and ghouls" said Swenson's al-ter-ego, Dr. Iivingsdoom.

"We want a safe place for families to come out to just have fun being together," said Will Daraall, a senior public relations representative. The kids area will be designated a creep-free zone, with ghost-catchers posted to trap wandering ghoulies.
