THURSDAY, AUGUST 'H7T PAGE FORTY THE HERALD-PALLADIUM, BctUb Harbor St. Joseph. Michigan 'Parkway' Would Rejplace Cancelled M-275 Freeway KOSE Guv'neRL i i The department defined a parkway as "a divided roadway with limited access, few grade separations (cross roads going over or under the parkway) and extensive landscaping." It would differ from a freeway by providing intersections at key roads and more landscaping and other eye pleasing designs. A bikeway probably would be built along the route of any parkway, the department said. Highway said the parkway should also meet "triihkline" standards for statewide and out-of-state car and truck traffic as well as local traffic.

Novi officials have asked the commission to reinstate M-275 or "a reasonable alternative." Springfield, White Lake and Commerce township board have all urged divided highways or parkways. The department also recommended cancelling the planned extension of the Northwestern Highway unless a north-south roadway such as the parkway is, built to provide a western end for Northwestern. But opponents of the scuttled freeway have called for improvements to local roads rather than construc inn of a highway to accomodate grow ing traffic volume. The Highway Commission cancelled the M-275 freeway project in January, after a decade on the drawing boards. It was the first time in state history a major highway project was cancelled after such lengthy planniw The 23-mile freeway would have connected Interstate 96 at Novi to 1-75 near Holly.

It was the last leg of a north-south' freeway from Toledo to Flint that bypassed Detroit. But residents in Oakland County protested the freeway would run through backyards, business districts and 200-acre wetlands. In rejecting the freeway, the commission told the department to prepare alternatives to handle Increasing traffic. The department's "parkway." however, apparently differs only slightly from a freeway. LANSING.

Mich. (AP)'- The state highway department wants to build a divided, limit-ed-access "parkway" to replace the cancelled Michigan 275 freeway in western Oakland County. The proposed "parkway" would differ little from the freeway which was fiercely opposed by local residents. It would provide greater access to motorists, intersections with major roads and more landscaping, the department said. The recommendation will be made to the Stat Highway Commission next week by the Department of State Highways and Transportation.

No immediate action will be taken, however, Commission Chairman Peter Fletcher said Tuesday. Local officials and citizen groups along the proposed route also will submit recommendations next Wednesday. The City of Novi and all three townships along the route support the parkway idea, as does Oakland County Executive Daniel Murphy, the department said. i 1 cy'i in. to) it B.
