Standard-Post Mendey. Hawke still in news Hawks likely to stay on top CHANTS BOB BROWN Bob Hawke, a familiar name on the Butte High track scene during his high school days, is making quite a name for himself at the University of Wisconsin these days. Hawke, a freshman, isn't allowed to compete in varsity track meets this year, but he has been putting on some brilliant shot- put exhibitions. A week ago Saturday, he put the shot 55 feet five inches, a new frosh mark at Wisconsin. Wisconsin's varsity record of 55 feet eight and seven-eighths inches was set by Elmer Ezerins hi 1963.

Hawke, son of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Hawke, Ramsay, has his sights set on breaking that varsity mark in this, his freshman year. For the benefit of track fans who may think Hawke's latest effort isn't up lo par with some of this high school tosses of 60 plus feet, it should be pointed out that the ex-Butte High athlete is now putting the 16-pound shot and not the 12 pound high By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Bozeman pulled into the Big 32 inference basketball lead over the weekend, thanks to' a Columbia Falls loss, and Is likely to stay there for the league title.

Helena, a team with a so-so record, upset Columbia Falls 7268 in two overtimes this past weekend. Helena was the first team to bump Bozeman early in the season and lost to Columbia Falls by only four points in their previous meeting. Columbia Falls Coach Ralph Johnson, when interviewed two weeks ago, remembered last season when his team had lost only one game, then was upset by Helena at the close of the season. Powerful Bozeman dumped third-place Fergus of Lewistown 88-78 Saturday night. The Hawks have played only one other team in the top 10, Anaconda, and defeated the Copperheads both times.

Bozeman has but one left, at Hardin Saturday night. Coach Rodger McCormick will be doing his best this week to prevent any letdown that so easily develops when a team facet an opponent with a 3-16 record such as Hardin's. Fergus, Missoula Hellgate and Anaconda all split the weekend. Hellgate lost to crosstown rival Missoula Sentinel- by seven points and Libby, hitting 56 per cent from the field, dumped Anaconda by nine. Billings schools had royal weekend dumping Great Falla clubi.

West edged Great Bison by three poinU but dumped Great Falls Central by M. Billings Senior defeated the Bison by 15 points and the Mustangs by 37. Billings Central dropped Hardin and Custer of Miles City. Glasgow took a big jump In the Big 32 standings by edging Dawson of Glendlve 82-81 and whipping Wolf Point. school shot.

Hawke's distance of 55 feet five inches is the second best toss in the Big 10 during the current indoor season and that includes frosh and varsity performances. All that and three varsity seasons ahead of him. Branch Brady, Great Falls, ran third in an exhibition two- mile race during the same meet Hawke let loose with his record-breaking put of the shot. BITS OF SPORTS A story entitled "Saddle Bronc Champ" written by Helen Clark, Butte, appears in the current issue of Western Horseman. The story, along with six illustrations, one of which includes Bob Harrington, Butte rodeo announcer, tells of Shawn career in rodeo.

Davis, of Whitehall, is currently sidelined with a leg injury and while the leg is healing is judging rodeos. Bob Rae, Butte High basketball coach, doesn't like the idea of playing the Division 3 basketball tournament in Anaconda. "Boy, Anaconda's going to be tough to beat on their own court," he says. Did you happen to notice the (cores of the four games played Saturday in the Class District 15 basketball tourney in Twin Bridges? We'll refresh your memory: Boulder 67, Sheridan 65 (title); Lima 62, Willow Creek 60 (consolation); Lima 51, Ennis 40 (elimination game) and Willow Creek 57, Whitehall 54, overtime, (elimination game). And did you see the score of the District 12 championship game in Great Falls? Simms beat Cascade, 74-73, in a triple overtime.

A Hollywood script, you might say. Did you hear about the TV station that ceased its broadcast of a golf tournament just when a sudden death playoff was about to start? Something like writing a basketball story and forgetting to tell who won the game. (AP) Young Charley Pasarell of Puerto Rico shot himself into me American Davis Cup picture by smashing Ron Holmberg of Dallas, 12-10, 10-8, for the National Indoor tennis championship Sunday. It was the second straight tournament victory for the 6- foot-1, 175-pound UCLA senior, who knocked off Jan-Erik Lundquist and Arthur Ashe on consecutive days last week in Philadelphia. "Charley is playing marvelously," said George MacCall, U.S.

Davis Cup captain, who witnessed the final match before a sellout crowd of 4,000 at the Salisbury Civic Center. "Our job now is just to get some blankets and keep him warm." In winning his first major title, Pasarell came through a star-studded international field that included some of the game's greatest players. Top- seeded Dennis Ralston, Ashe, Manuel Santa of Spain, Rafael Osuna of Mexico and defending champion Lundquist were among those to fall in earlier rounds. The final match was a boring struggle of cannonball serving with Pasarell finally proving superior from the delivery line. He lost his service once in the first set and again in the third through playing lapses, but the rest of the time was hammering across blasts that enabled him to hold service easily.
