'Between the Hedges 9 HM-Georgia game tossup ATHENS, Ga. (UPI)--The Georgia Bulldogs, desperately in need of some defense to support the highest-scoring i a Conference, hosts the Ole Miss Rebels Saturday. More than 50,000 are expected to attend the 2 p.m. EOT game. Both teams have 2-2 records and both have lost i only i SEC contest--Georgia losing 38-14 to Mississippi State and Ole Miss losing '35-21 to 2nd-ranked Alabama.

Saturday's game is rated a tossup. "I think we are about the same strength on offense," said Georgia Coach Vince Dooley. "But, Ole Miss' defense seems to be stronger than Offensive statistics do not agree with Dooley. Georgia leads the SEC in scoring (34.5 ppg) and is third in total offense (391.5 yards pe game). Ole Miss is last in the conference in total offense (238.3), last in rushing I 5 I Prep, college grid menu FRIDAY Greenville High at Cleveland, 8 p.m.

True, the Bulldogs are last in scoring deEense (28.8 next to last in total defense (356.3) but Ole Miss is next to last in scoring defense (17.5) and has allowed an average of 288 yards per game. Georgia, biggest team in the conference, has a weight advantage over Ole Miss. The starting Ffen si ve 1 i ne averages 2 50 pounds from tackle to tackle and Georgia's defensive front four averages 241.

Dooley feels Ole Miss' biggest advantage is in the play of Rebel quarterback Kenny Lyons wljom he compares to Archie Manning. Lyons has averaged 109 yards per game. While Dooley figures Lyons will give the Rebels a passing edge, Georgia has three runners who have gained guesses more yardage than any Ole Miss runner. Glynn Harrison (335 yards), Horace King (2f6) and Andy Reid (165) pace the ftulldog ground attack while top Rebel runner James Reed has only 133 yards. i i a a 2 2 5 sophomore, will start at defensive a Miss in pace of 250-pound Pete Robertson who injured a shoulder in last week's game against Alabama'.

However, the Rebels get back starting fullback Paul Hofer who missed the Alabama game because of a leg injury. Georgia will have sophomore Matt Robinson, who'has run and passed for 344 yards and four touchdowns while a i i i sophomores, starting at quarterback. Georgia holds a three-game winning streak against Ole Miss, beating the Rebels 20 0 last season. The last time Ole Miss beat Georgia was in 1970 when Archie Manning, in his senior year, led the Rebels to a 31-21 victory. The only other time Ole Miss ever won here in Athens was in 1940, then by 28-14.

Georgia has had its troubles on the road this season but has been tremendous on offense here in Athens, beating Oregon State 40-35 and South Carolina 52-14. Ole Miss only previous out-of-state game this season was a 15-7 upset loss at Memphis State. "I think we showed we can hold our own against just about anyone with the way we played the first 36 minutes against Alabama," said Ole Miss Coach Ken Cooper, a former Georgia player and former Georgia assistant coach. "But we know we'll have our hands full trying to stop Georgia's running game." "Sure, we'll move the ball and we'll score," said Dooley. "But unless we start playing some defense, it's going to be a long afternoon." No.

2 Alabama ready By United Press Coach Bear Bryant says second- ranked Alabama has been "slow and very ordinary looking" in practice but he guesses the Tide is ready to meet winless Florida State Saturday. Bryant sent his team through a light workout Thursday in a final review of plans for the Seminoles, losers of 16 straight games. "We rehearsed our game plans in sweat clothes," said Bryant. "I think we know them pretty well, but we are still slow and very ordinary looking." Sixth-ranked Auburn also went through a rehearsal of its strategy for Kentucky as well as trying to anticipate what the Wildcats may. do Saturday.

"We expect to see a lot of stunts, and we expect them to throw more than they've been throwing," said Jordan. "I know they believe in their running game and we are expecting them to show us a good one." Mississippi State drilled 40 minutes Thursday in preparation for Lamar (Tex.) and Florida stressed the kicking game inils general rundown of plans for Vanderbilt. At Georgia, Coach Vince Dooley listed defensive tackle Dan Spivey as a "very doubtful" participant in Saturday's battle with Mississippi at Athens. Dooley said Mike Wilson would replace Spivey in the lineup. Coach Steve Sloan pronouncced Vanderbilt ready for the contest with Florida after a runthrough review in sweat clothes.

-The World Football League has postponed indefinitely the draft of the players from the financiallystricken Detroit and Jacksonville franchises in hopes the teams will be able to play next year. The remaining playing schedules of the teams, which have been taken over by the league, will be cancelled for the rest of 1974, though. "We have decided to cancel remaining games of these two teams but several potential investors have indicated they wish to keep the teams intact for a fresh start next year," said WFL Commissioner Gary Davidson Thursday. "We are negotiating with several groups, some of which have indicated a willingness to take over players' contractual obligations immediately and begin preparations for playing next year. "We believe it would be best to keep these teams together whether they would be relocated or remain in their present cities for the 1975 season." The revised WFL schedule for next week has Shreyeport at Philadelphia, Chicago at Charlotte, Birmingham at Southern California, Florida at Memphis and Hawaii at Portland.

Davidson also announced the first round of the league playoffs will begin Nov. 20. The field will be made up of the three division winners and three wild card teams (teams with the best won- loss records among the non-division champions). The semifinals will be played Nov. 27 and Nov.

Sun clinches tie in West ANAHEIM (UPI) The Southern California Sun has clinched a tie for the World Football League's Western Division title but Coach Tom Fears says, critically, they didn't play like it. "We were off all over," Fears said Thursday night after the Sun's 25-23 victory over the Shreveport Steamer for Southern California's sixth win in a row. "The passing wasn't our best.

The receiving wasn't our best. "There is consolation clinching a tie for the division championship, but we don't want to go for ties." Tony Adams threw a 47-yard pass to Ralph Nelson for one Sun touchdown and ran in from the seven for another score. Southern California's llth win in 15 games left it five games in front of the Hawaiians in the WFL West with five games left. Shreveport, 4-10-1, is third. The Sun's other TD came on a one- yard run from Alonzo Emery and ex- Stanford Rose Bowl hero Rod Garcia kicked a 30-yard field goal.

Tennessee went throuugh a final home workout before leaving for Louisiana Slate and Coach Bill Battle sounded almost sympathetic when discussing the Tigers. "LSU is a very good football team that has had a lot of problems and seems to be snake bit," said Battle. "They have played exceptionally well not to have won any more games than they have." Another snake-bit team, South Carolina, went through a "short, enthusiastic" workout for Virginia Tech, but coach Paul Dietzel said the Gamecocks were pretty bruised up.
