It is the first and only circus featuring all black and Hispanic performers.

"Here, you're going to shout, clap, sing and dance, do everything," said Casual Dupree, the ringmaster who co-founded the circus in 1994. "That's the black experience." DUPREE DOESN'T call his cir-cus the greatest show on earth. He refers to it as "an entertainment revival." There are your traditional jugglers, elephants, aerial artists, uni-cyclists, contortionists, clowns and dancers. "This is so much more than a circus; it's inspirational," said Tampa resident Kenya Walker, who brought her four children to the big blue tent Thursday. "I've been to the circus before, but this is better.

You really feel like you were a part of it all." The two-hour show features 52 performers who bring a fresh, urban flair to the Big Top. Street wear is as common as glittering sequins and performers entertain to the sounds of hip-hop, gospel, and salsa. Clown Skeeter Reece, a St Petersburg native, left the Ringling Brothers circus to join UniverSoul. "Black children haven't been introduced to clowns the way white children have," said Reece, 48. "When a black child sees a clown they are scared and apprehensive.

By the end of our show, they all want hugs and kisses." Aside from the entertainment, UniverSoul wants to give kids a positive message. Performances are accentuated with chants such as "Honor thy mother and father" and "There are two types of class: first class and no class." "My grandchildren had never been to a circus," said St Petersburg resident Mattie Daniels, 72, who brought her two grandchildren, ages 9 and 11, to Thursday's show. "If wonderful for them to see black people take center stage in such a positive show." THAT'S WHAT Dupree and his partner, Cedric Walker, envisioned when they formed Soul Circus limited. "We wanted to create something that was family-oriented, but different," said Dupree, 42. They recruited top black circus acts as well as street performers, polished their talent and gave them a venue.

The circus also uses black ushers, vendors and security from the host city during each stop. "There's a special spiritual soul that makes this circus different from the others," said Dupree. "We not only want to entertain, we want to build confidence in black productions and show we can provide first class, state-of-the-art entertainment "And, we always start our shows on time." The 2000 UniverSoul circus runs through Sunday next to Raymond James Stadium on North Dale Mabry Highway. Performances today are at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Saturday shows are at noon, 4:30 p.m.

and 8 p.m.; Sunday shows are at noon, 3:30 and 6:30. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and at the gate.
