Why not Tide-Gator Sugar matchup? By DAVID MOFFIT UPI Sports Writer MemotolheSugarBowl: We realize that your television sponsor probably would object to two teams from the same region, but It looks like Alabama-Florida would make a great bowl game. Both have a good shot at going 10-1 and, since they don't meet this season, are expected to wind up co-champions ol the Southeastern Conference. Thus, the Sugar Bowl could have the honor of crowning the "unofficial" SEC king. The sixth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide swept aside what appeared to be its toughest roadblock Saturday by whipping 16th-ranked Tennessee, 30-7. The 12th-ranked Florida Gators trounced independent Florida State, 34-S.

Quarterbacks were the center of attention in both contests. Alabama's i a Todd a touchdowns and passed for another while Florida's Don Gaffney broke a bone in his left wrist on the Gators' first offensive play. Alabama has an apparent breather next a a i Texas Christian at Birmingham. Florida, which Isn't sure when Gaffney will return, also steps outside the conference, entertaining Duke. Elsewhere in the Southeast this past weekend, the Georgia Bulldogs routed Auburn, trailing by 17 points lute in the third period, scored three touchdowns in less than five minutes to beat Georgia Tech, 31-27; Louisiana a edged Kentucky, 17-15; South Carolina outslugged Ole Miss, 35-29; and Mississippi Stale squeezed past North Texas Slate, 15-12.
