Barnes, 46, defeated Democrat Bert Daniel, a retired independent sales professional, during Tuesday's election. She won the race with approximately 60 percent of the vote, or 4,168 votes, according to unofficial results. "I'm ready to work hard," Barnes said. "I've got a lot to learn, so I'm eager to get started." Daniel said Tuesday night that he accepts and respects the decision of the voters.

Barnes will take over a seat held by Republican Commissioner Danny Tyson, who Barnes defeated during the May primary. Barnes said she would like to see more unity and harmony on the board. "It's been divided now for some time," Barnes said. "Hopefully, with a new person on the board, we can turn over a new leaf and try to work together as a team with a common goal and put aside any kind of personal differences." Barnes said she also hopes to bring more transparency to the board. "That's a big concern of the citizens," Barnes said.

"I want to work hard to make sure that everything is more open and transparent." Barnes said she is grateful for the support she received from residents in District 4. She said she also is committed to working to help bring quality jobs to Nash County for people of all skill levels. At 46 years old, Barnes will be the youngest member on the board. She said she hopes her victory will encourage other young people, especially young women, to become involved with local government. Barnes said she has made many friendships and relationships during her campaign.

"I felt like this was a call God had on my life," Barnes said. She brings a variety of experience to the board. Barnes is self-employed in agribusiness. In the past, she worked as a planning assistant for the city of Rocky Mount and as a real estate paralegal. She served on the Nash County Planning Board for six years.

Barnes also is active in the community. She and her husband, Johnny, have three children, ages 18 to 22.
