rlfliilDA http:tampatrib.com THE TAMPA TRIBUNE TUESDAY. AUGUST 10. 1999 SPORTS 3 COLLEGES BASKETBALL 1 Notebook South Florida Coleman could face charges PRO HOCKEY Lightning's Paterson named scout A Tribune staff, wire report TAMPA Former Lightning assistant coach Rick Paterson officially was named to the team's scouting department on Monday. Paterson will be responsible for scouting Lightning opponents and and the first full-squad practices are set for Thursday on campus Tommy Hunter, a tight end recruit from Wakulla, failed to meet USFs academic requirements. Ira Kaufman Florida Spurrier optimistic: Rain Georgia transfers shines talented freshman class made a big impression on Coach Jim Leavttt on Monday, some more than others.

During a two-hour morning workout and an afternoon practice A Tribune wire report steadily fell, and the threat of an even bigger storm front loomed, yet Steve Spurrier's forecast after one morning workout with his 1999 freshman class was clear players throughout North mm American pro rr Ir1" if leagues. 'This is something Rick has done very successfully in the past," Vice President and General Manager Rick Dudley said. "He Central Florida Good timing The Knights completed their timing and testing sessions Monday in preparation for two-a-day practices that begin today. Due to extremely high participation in a summer strength and conditioning program, most of the players finished their timing and testing drills last week. The players with 100 percent participation during that conditioning program were exempt from Monday afternoon's endurance run.

One player, however, did not participate in Monday activities for a different reason. Junior tackle Freddie Moore of Tallahassee announced his intention to leave the team and transfer to Florida in his hometown, where he will be eligible immediately. Around the nation Kentucky-Indiana Kentucky Athletic Director CM. Newton would like to see the Bourbon Barrel trophy, given annually to the winner of the Kentucky-Indiana football game, go the way of the defunct Kentucky-Tennessee Beer Barrel. Last week, Newton and Tennessee Athletic Director Doug Dickey said they had decided to end the 74-year-old tradition of awarding a blue, orange and white-painted beer keg to the winner of the Kentucky-Tennessee football game.

That decision came In the wake of an alcohol-related truck crash last fall that killed two men, including one Kentucky football player. Holtz avoids flag flap: South Carolina coach Lou Holtz may have something to say about everything except the Confederate flag flying atop the Statehouse. Holtz said South Carolinians aren't as proud of their state or the natives who accomplish great things as they should be. "We also have some things that are very distracting, such as the case of the Confederate flag," he said. "I'm not going to get involved in anything, I'm just a football coach." When asked if he thought the Confederate flag, which was visible over Holtz's shoulder as he spoke in the Williams-Brice press box, should be removed from the Statehouse, he deadpanned, "What flag?" Holtz said his football team would not promote any purpose other than South Carolina football and the advancement of the university.

"We're not going to wear gay pride ribbons on our shirt and we aren't going to wear anything," he said. "We have enough problems." Tribune wires Patterson has a good eye for talent and this is an important shortened to 70 minutes because of rain, Leavitt couldn't help but notice the athleticism of two Georgia transfers, LB Kawika Mitchell and QB Mike Usry. Also conspicuous was former Plant City High LB Arrtwan Fleming, who displayed quick feet despite an expanded waistline. Reming, rated as The Tampa Tribune's No. 38 player in the nation, needs to drop at least 20 pounds to reach the playing weight of 250 preferred by USF coaches.

Yet even with the additional baggage, Fleming displayed tantalizing skills. "Antwan's not necessarily out of shape," Leavitt said. "He's a big kid and a good football player with good footwork. I'd like to have him at 250 but I'm not opposed to playing a guy at middle linebacker at 265 if he can handle the weight." Mitchell features good size, 6-foot-2, 238 pounds, and speed as he competes for playing time in a deep linebacker corps. "Mitchell looks great he's going to play this year," Leavitt said.

"He's fast, strong, smart and he's ready." Making a contribution: Leavitt expects four or five freshmen to play significant roles in USFs third season, which opens Sept. 4 at Division l-A San Diego State. Monday's workouts in shorts attracted 29 first-year players, including RB Hugh Smith, a Miami of Ohio transfer, and WR George Hlgglns of Tarpon Springs, whose college career has been delayed by a military stint. "These freshmen are learning to practice and they have a long ways to go, but that's typical," Leavitt said. "We've got guys coming in here Thursday who have practiced 500 times." Summer in the city: Several first-year Bulls suffered cramps during the afternoon session in steamy conditions.

"Don't forget the bananas," Leavitt advised the walking wounded. Odds and Bulls expect former Lakeland High standout defensive end John Brown to participate in today's drills. Brown, in his first season of eligibility, was absent Monday because of a summer school commitment Media Day will be held Wednesday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium and highly favorable. "This is, I think, one of our best freshman groups," Spurrier said after the first of Monday's two freshmen-only workouts, officially kicking off his 10th season as Gators coach. "It's different than most years trying to just start from scratch, in that these players have done an excellent job on their own learning from the upperclass-men during our summer school program." The only damper on the day, aside from weather, was Spurrier's confirmation that two freshmen DL Roy Williams of DeLand and DBWR Keiwan Ratliff of Ohio failed to qualify academically.

Williams just missed the minimum required score on his entrance exam, and Ratliff apparently had a grade discrepancy in a high school course. Both will try and qualify this fall and could enroll at UF in January, giving them four years' eligibility. Another freshman, Key West FB Ran Carthon, is recovering from foot surgery and likely will be red-shirted. Still, kudos outnumbered casualties Monday. QB Chris Stephens and his trio of wideouts Taylor Jacobs, Jabar Gaffney and Elgin Hicks shined in man-coverage situations, with Stephens showing Wuerffelian touch on a series of fade routes.

As for the 13 defensive players, Spurrier said several could play this year, including Belle Glade prep All-American Dwrlght Jackson. A linebacker in high school, Jackson was moved Monday to strong safety, a position that could open depending on incumbent Rod Graddy's status. Graddy, already suspended the first two games for violating a team rule, was stopped by police soon after a fight at a downtown nightclub Friday, and two passengers in his car were arrested. Graddy wasn't charged, and cooperated with police, but school officials said Monday UF's Office of Student Judicial Affairs may look into the matter. DETROIT Charlotte Hornets forward Derrick Coleman could face criminal charges for allegedly urinating in the dining room of a popular downtown restaurant.

The Lightning fired scouting director Don Murdoch and Coach General Manager Jacques Demers on July 14 after Palace Sports and Entertainment purchased the team and revamped the front office. Paterson, who was fired July 15 with fellow assistant Paulin Bor-deleau, was Demers' assistant for two seasons.

Before joining the Lightning, Paterson coached the IHL's Cleveland Lumberjacks and was Lightning interim head coach for six games in 1997 before Demers' arrival. Bordeleau was named coach of the IHL's Detroit Vipers, which is owned by He replaced Steve Ludzik, who was named lightning coach. FSU coach Mike Martin said second baseman Marshall McDou-gall, who hit six home runs in a game at Maryland and was named MVP of the College World Series, likely will return to school for his senior year. So FSU coach Bobby Bowden said he was surprised when Boldin went to offensive coordinator Mark Richt after Monday's morning practice and said he no longer wants to be a quarterback. "He said his heart wasn't in it and he felt like he ought to play another position," said Bowden, who called Boldin an NFL prospect as a quarterback.

"I felt like I was playing quarterback for the wrong reasons," Boldin said. "If you want to play quarterback, your heart has to be in it." Boldin said the move is permanent and that he has no desire to play quarterback in the future after current Seminoles Chris Weinke, Marcus Outzen and Jared Jones are gone.

FSU catcher Cash signs with Blue Jays Kevin Cash asked if he could play catcher for the Falmouth (Mass.) Commodores of the Cape Cod League when he arrived in late June, expecting to play that position at Florida State next year. "Scouts were saying my best chance in professional baseball is at catcher," said Cash, who has played first and third base at FSU after primarily playing shortstop at Gaither High. Cash's intuition had a more immediate impact than he figured.

He was named to the Cape Cod All-Star team, was Falmouth's MVP and ended up signing with the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday for $81,000 after also receiving interest from the Cleveland Indians. "Jesse entered a plea with the understanding that the plea would be taken under advisement for 90 days," Howarth said. That means if Boulerice stays out of trouble until Nov. 9, the conviction will be expunged from his record, said Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Jim Gonzales.

A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt Boulerice, who turns 21 today, had been charged with assault to do great bodily harm less than murder for hitting an opponent in an April 17, 1998, Ontario Hockey League playoff game.
