4 BAYLIFE MONDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1999 THE TAMPA TRIBUNE http:tampatrib.com EntertmwentExtra! Shania Twain proves a treat for fans Singer kicks off pre-Bucs show Review All in all, the music has about as much relation to country as Michael Bolton has to soul. But give Twain her due she shows affection for her fans. She signed autographs and slapped hands throughout the show. She got the H.B. Plant High School Chamber Singers to sing on "God Bless The Child," donated money to a local charity, and invited a 5-year-old girl named Brittany onstage to sing.

She also let a fan introduce her nine-piece band. Showing that sort of grace and charisma makes you want to like Twain, even if you don't like her music. Is her act genuine? It doesn't matter. It's either coming from the heart, or, to paraphrase one of rock's reigning women, she fakes it so real she is beyond fake. Kevin Walker can be reached at kwalkertampatrib.com or (813) 259-7975.

By KEVIN WALKER of The Tampa Tribune TAMPA Canadian import and "country" music star Shania Twain did what she does best at the Ice Palace on Saturday night provide straightforward renditions of her songs while dancing and clapping and moving about the stage in a nicely choreographed way, sort of like tonight's main stage show at the MGM Grand in Vegas. But who cares what critics think, right? Twain rarely receives favorable reviews, but the 20,962 people who attended set an Ice Palace record, topping the 20,900 who saw Billy Joel in February. They both have the songs and fashion show. First, there was the leopard-print jumpsuit. Then a sort of "Solid Gold" dancer outfit of silver shirt, shorts and go-go boots.

And the big encore ensemble, a se-quined pantsuit. She opened with the big drum beat of "Honey I'm Home" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" Then came the dry ice as she sang "I Won't Leave You Lonely Tonight" and the sassy "That Don't Impress Me Much." The centerpiece was "Still the One," which Twain performed while playing guitar and sitting on bar stool (although wearing that silver get-up sort of killed any grass-roots vibe she might have been shooting for). She closed her set with "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" before coming back for an encore that included "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)." shares his CURTIS ROSS The Tampa Tribune CLEARWATER It being December, John Prine offered a couple of holiday favorites during his set Saturday night "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and his own "Christmas in Prison." The songs may not be Prine concert staples but they do a fair of illustrating the range that drew a sellout crowd of 2,173 to Ruth Eckerd Hall Saturday night. Prine can go from sweet to sour, from silly to heartbreaking, from non sequirur to penetrating observation in the space of a verse two.

Prine roared into his set with "Spanish Pipedream." Prine's own acoustic guitar was supported by bassist Dave Jacques and guitarist Jason Wilbur. In addition to the Prine-written title track, the pair also sang remakes of old country hits including the bizarre wife-swapping ballad "Let's Invite Them Over." DeMent returned with Prine for the encore, which included a version of "Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone" that ended with both singers in giggles.
