King gained four yards and Blade went up the middle for nine to give the Salukis a first and goal at the one yard line. Blade scored from there with 7:31 left in the first quarter. With just 21 seconds left in the third quarter, the Pirates broke the ice and scored their first home touchdown all season to cut the Salukis lead 14-6. Billy Wallace cracked over from the one-yard line for the score which capped a 73 yard drive for the Pirates. Four completed passes by ECU quarterback John Casazza spearheaded fc drive aad a Passes of 11, 17, and six yards to Dwight Flanagan from Casazza highlighted the drive. Wallace was again suc-r-rsiui in reaching paydirt, this time from two yards out. A three yard penalty against Southern rUinois kept the drive alive for the Pirates.

Wallace scored with just 1:03 left in the game. The pirates once again attempted the tieing two point conversion. However, Casazza fumbled the snap and the play failed to produce any score. The Salukis capitalized on two East Carolina bumbles in the early moments of the first quarter; for teir two successful on the extra point attempt. East Carolina was not able to cross the 50 yard line in the first half of rhe game.

A strong punting effort by Salukis punter Sam Finocchio kept the Pirates bottled up until the second half began. East Carolina was still slow in getting started in the second half.
