Duhaney, who follows Mutiny midfielder Steve Ralston, beat out finalists Ross Paule (Colorado) and Brian Kelly (New YorkNew Jersey). "It's kind of overwhelming," said Duhaney, who overcame a serious knee injury in 1996.

"It was something I had in my head. But then to do it and actually win it is very gratifying." Duhaney played in 27 games for the Mutiny. Most of his starts were at left fullback, but in the last couple weeks of the season he was a central Meanwhile, Mutiny midfielder Carlos Valderrama is among the selections to the MLS "Best 11" all-league team. Valderrama led the Mutiny in scoring this season with 25 points, including a league-high 19 assists. Kansas City Wizards midfielder Preki won the league MVP award after leading the MLS in scoring with 12 goals and 17 points for 41 points.

Kansas City's Mark Chung, who played at South Florida, won the Snickers Fair Play Award. In other awards, D.C. By BLANE BACHELOR Tribune correspondent After a tremendous playoff run that followed a late-season skid, the Colorado Rapids have been dubbed as the Cinderella story of Major League Soccer this season. But facing the seemingly indomitable D.C. United, soccer fr11 auvici nee(j a magic wand to prevent their spell from being broken today in the MLS Championship game at RFK Stadium. United consistently has been the team to beat in MLS' two-year history. They have backed up last year's league title with the best regular-season record, along with setting the MLS record for goals in a season with 70.

Their all-around solid play has come despite having a number of top players absent with various national team commitments and the toughest schedule in the league this season. Colorado is well aware of Unit-ed's strengths. And more than willing to try to overcome them, despite its role as the underdog. "It makes this final even more interesting and challenging for Rapids coach Glenn "Mooch" Myernick said. "They are the champions and they have something that we want." Upsets are something the Rapids have become accustomed to in the playoffs.

Facing Western Conference leader Kansas City in the first round, Colorado was predicted by most to be an easy sweep for the Wizards. But the Rapids defied the odds 4- and the predictors with a 3-0 thumping of the Wizards in Kansas City, before taking the Sweep with a 3-2 victory at Mile High Stadium. Their victory in the Western Conference finals came in similar fashion. Against Dallas who had won three of the four regular-season games by at least a two-goal margin the Rapids again swept the series, with Game 2 a come-from-behind victory off a late-game side volley from midfielder Chris Henderson. I These successes helped to redeem the Rapids' late-season woes, as they lost nine of their last 14 matches to enter the playoffs with an 18-18 record the Performances: Nightly except Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (7 p.m.).

duo of Jaime Moreno and Raul Diaz Arce, who has eight all-time goals against the Rapids. The fans at RFK Stadium which could set a record at 58,000 for the largest crowd to ever watch a sporting event there might tip the scales in United's favor even more. Understandably, United coach Bruce Arena has addressed the issue of overconfidence this week. "Colorado beating us the last game at home really sent a signal to some of our players," Arena said. "This is a cup final and if a player is not ready to play in a cup final, he'll never be ready to play at all." worst of all eight teams who entered the playoffs.

They ended last year's disappointing season, which saw the firing of one coach and the worst record in the league, without even making the playoffs. "One thing I have to say about Colorado is that they are taking advantage of MLS' playoffs," United captain John Harkes said. "They've worked hard to get where they are. For us, we have the experience of the first year championship game. But anything can happen in the final." The Rapids' strategy likely will focus on the counterattack and taking D.C.

Lipinski, who unseated Kwan for both titles and became the youngest to win each of them was second, and Russia's Elena Sokolova edged another American, Angela Nikodi-nov, for third. Eldredge's fell in warmups, spraining his right shoulder.

The four-time U.S. champion crashed to the ice near the sideboards. He lay flat on the ice after breaking his fall with his right arm while coach Richard Callaghan and a doctor tended to him. After nearly four minutes, he slowly got up and left the ice under his own power. As world junior champion Ev-geni Plushenko finished his routine he finished second Scott Davis, who was next after Eldredge in the skating order, waited to go on the ice.

But Eldredge, who trains nearby and was skating before a hometown audience, suddenly burst through the curtains leading under the stands and moved past Davis. A Tribune wire report DETROIT It's too early in the season for perfection, so Michelle Kwan will settle for coming close. Todd Eldredge is just happy he wasn't hurt worse in a nasty fall Saturday at Skate America. Kwan easily won her first matchup with Tara Lipinski, sweeping the judges' panel with a flawless free skate. Lipinski fell on a triple lutz, but her program didn't have the overall artistry to match Kwan, who got all 5.8s for technical merit and 5.9s for artistic impression.

So the initial salvo in what He shook his right arm continually as he warmed up while Plushenko's marks were being announced. Then, to a huge ovation, the 1996 world champ hit five triple jumps in a somewhat conservative but courageous program. That was plenty good the Canadian judge was so impressed that she gave him a perfect 6.0 for artistry to win his fifth Skate America and fourth in a row. U.S. pairs champions Kyoko Ina and Jason Dungjen finished second behind Russia's Marina Eltsova and Andrey Bushkov, the 1996 world champs.
