Video games getting movie-style premieres By Laura Eventon San Francisco Chronicle Lavish parties. Big budgets. Movie trailers. Splashy premiers. Ratings criteria for sex and violence.

Sound like the movie business? Guess again. The spinmeisters behind Sonic the Hedgehog and Johnny Cage, the Jean-Claude Van Damme-style character in the "Mortal Kombat" video game, are adopting Hollywood-style gimmicks, from fan contests to packaging hot rap recordings with new games. As the industry is growing up, so are its con sumers. The Pac Man generation has come of age and it is turning to the video game companies that amused it on college campuses 15 years ago. Improved 3-D style graphics and live-action video that make games look more like movies than pixilated cartoons also attract a broader range of consumers, ranging from 30-something moms to grandmothers.

It started last year, when Acclaim Entertainment unleashed the original "Mortal Kombat" game for the home with a movie-style launch date it dubbed "Mortal Monday." Along with the usual newspaper and radio advertising, this year's $10 million marketing blitz for the sequel, "Mortal Kombat II," includes the use of a 45-sec-ond trailer for the hand-to-hand combat game that will run in 3,600 movie theaters across the country. Acclaim already has poured $50 million to develop, manufacture and market the game, which hits the stores tomorrow. That's about as much as a Hollywood studio invests in a big-budget movie. Now, Nintendo plans a movie-style premiere in Los Angeles for its "Donkey Kong Country" video game a week before its Nov. 21 launch.

FAR SIDE SLYLOCK FOX AND COMICS FOR KIDS Draw with SLYLOCK FOX a shark DID YOU KNOW? The perfect quill pen Knight News Wire Q. What bird was used to make quill pens? A. Geese and swans are the two types of birds from which most quills were taken for writing.

Feathered quill pens were the main instruments for writing for about 1,000 years. Monks in Europe developed the technique of cutting and shaping the end of the quill, which is a tiny tube, and would hold a little bit of ink. In the early days of this country, Thomas Jefferson wrote so much that he raised his own geese for quills. Q. Why do they call mixed-breed dogs mutts? A.

The word "mutt" began as the short form of "mutton-head," which itself was slang and a put-down of a person who was thought to be stupid or foolish. Later, the word was applied to mongrel dogs. Then the word became a part of the mainstream language. For example, in an issue of the Ladies' Home Journal, published in 1927, this advice was offered: "Be. careful the mutt doesn't get in a race with a caterpillar some day, and die of heart collapse."
