Buffet Feature CATFISH Plan Your Luncheon Banquet or Meeting With Us Don Barr's By KEN TUCKER Knight Newt Wirt Even before it arrived In theaters, "Silent Night, Deadly Night" had attracted more publicity than your usual garbage slasher film. It seems that the central image of this movie Santa Claus as a mass killer was being used in television commercials for the film, and many people were appalled that such an idea was being planted in the minds of children. Many of the protesters wanted the movie, not merely its commercials. banned as well. The people who made "Silent Night, Deadly Night" have hit upon a truly disturbing image around which to build a movie.

Unfortunately, "Silent Night, Deadly Night" isn't even a honest abomination. No, it's an abomination made dull with pious self-righteousness. The murderer is a thug dressed as Santa Claus. This so traumatizes Billy that he grows up with a neurotic fear of department-store Santas. Much later, Billy is forced to become a department-store Santa himself, and putting on that pillow and beard is just too much.

He goes over the edge, slitting people open with a linoleum cutter while muttering verses of "The Night Before Christmas." "Silent Night, Deadly Night" is one of those movies in which, when a character walks into a living room decorated with a moose head mounted on the wall, you can be sure that within five minutes someone is going to wind up impaled on the moose's antlers. Excuse met Razor-sharp antlers. WHAT IS ironic about "Silent Night, Deadly Night" is that it expresses the same facile psychology as the protests being lodged against it. The endlessly repeated message of "Silent Night, Deadly Night" is that if you watch violent acts, you are more likely to commit them yourself. You would think that people who go around trying to get movies and TV commercials banned would stop and think: If cynical hustlers like the creators of "Silent Night, Deadly Night" believe this, how can it possibly be true? You Devil," topped the weekend box office receipts. After only three days in release in 1,384 theaters, "Oh God! You Devil," a second sequel to his blockbuster "Oh, God!" collected $5.5 million to lead all other films to show during the weekend.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Terminator" plummeted to second place in the box office parade over the weekend, reporting $3.4 million. It was a 19 percent drop for the violent drama. But after 17 days it had gathered a healthy $14.7 million.

Another newcomer, "No Small Affair," placed third in the box office race with $2.2 million In three days posted at 1,247 theaters. "Places in the Heart," a sure-fire Oscar nominee, picked up another $2.2 million in 868 theaters over the weekend for a grand total of $22.3 million in its 52 days of release. The black military drama, "A Soldier's Story," placed fifth with receipts of $1.7 million over the weekend, another 19 percent falloff but a grand total of $13.8 million in 59 weeks. "Amadeus," the screen version of the hit London-Broadway Mozart biography, showed the healthiest gain of the week. It posted a 76 percent jump In earnings to $1.5 million in 419 theaters.

However, the upswing could be attributed to the fact that it played only 111 theaters last weekend. NOW IN ITS 45th day of release, "Amadeus" has earned $9.2 million. "Teachers," which has earned a healthy $24.4 million in 38 days of release, plunged 24 percent over the weekend as it wracked up $1.4 million. This film, also lost 118 theaters in the process. Trailing in eighth place with a weekend take of $1.4 million in its first week was "Silent Night, Deadly Night," followed by "All of Me," ($1.3 million) and "First Born," ($1.1 million.) "Ghostbusters," although dropping off by 10 percent, remains the runaway hit picture of the year, adding more than $1 million over the weekend to top the $213 million mark in its 157th day.

Nudity was included In other works, but the artists said bank officials were upset that a tiny bit of pubic hair was visible in Eskra's drawing. "The artists' decision to remove their work was to protest what they have determined to be an act of selective censorship," Eskra said In a written statement that Scherck said had been agreed to by all eight artists. The statement said at least one bank official was present when the exhibit was set up.

The statement also said the bank removed Eskra's drawing without consulting the artists. CO CO to oo i a JS SHOWCASE (I oo -a CO CINEMAS BELLEVILLE, 111.
