D2 THE DAILY DTSPATCH, Moline, Illinois Wednesday, May 30, 1990 Local Edgar endorses marching 'Saints' route along U.S. 67 Illinois Secretary of State Jim Edgar on Tuesday released a copy of a letter he sent to the chairman of the Corridor 67 group affirming his support for routing the Avenue of the Saints along U.S. 67. In a campaign stop at United Township High School's south campus in East Moline, the Republican candidate for governor released the letter supporting a Quad-Cities route for the proposed interstate from St. Paul and Minneapolis to St.

Louis, Mo. Corridor 67 is a coalition of community leaders from Western Illinois whose cities border U.S. 67. Most Quad-Cities communities are members. The letter, dated May 25, asked Corridor 67 chairman Barney Elias, of Jacksonville, 111., and Steve Burgess of Davenport, Iowa, to convey Edgar's support when a group of local representatives travel June 7 to Washington.

The final decision on the path the route will take is up to Congress. While the Federal Highway Administration gave its support to an alternate route that goes through much of Iowa bypassing the Quad-Cities and winding through Missouri its letter endorsing the route was lukewarm. Quad-Cities' leaders were encour aged by the administration's reaction and planned the June 7 lobby effort to sway Illinois' congressional delegation to back the Quad-Cities Western Illinois route. The proposed route through the Quad-Cities and western Illinois would create twice as many jobs as another route backed by a panel of engineers, Mr. Edgar's letter said.

U.S. 67 work already is under way in Illinois using state dollars, he said. "Our state is willing to do its share, as evidenced by the $130 million allotted to work along U.S. 67," he Illinois communities and the state also have taken on a larger share of the transportation burden. "I believe that commitment should be rewarded, especially because it is consistent with the recent pronouncements by the Bush Administration concerning the need for local initiative in the transporation area," Mr.

Edgar's letter said. Copies were sent Transportation Secretary Samuel Skinner, state Transportation Secretary Mike Lane, Gov. James Thompson, U.S. Sens. Alan Dixon and Paul Simon, House Minority Leader Robert Michel, and Congressmen Richard Durbin, Lane Evans and Jerry Cos-tello.

(Photo by John Greenwood) Educators, employers must unite Edgar addresses UTHS 'partners9 By Lynne Miller Staff writer Schools and employers must work together, Secretary of State Jim Edgar said Tuesday, addressing a group of East Moline educators and John Deere Harvester Works employees who established a partnership. "I think it's critical," said the Republican candidate for governor. "You've got to have cooperation between the educational community and business." Mr. Edgar spoke to people already engaged in a working relationship.

United Township High School and John Deere Harvester Works are partners in education. Representatives of the school and the plant are working together on a committee to improve the quality of instruction at UT, tailoring it to the needs of the working world. Mr. Edgar met with 14 educators and employees of Harvester Works for a round-table discussion at UT South campus. He quizzed members of both groups on their working relationship.

Students in Millie Longbons' accounting class at UT toured the computer area at the Harvester Works East Moline plant two months ago. "It was informal," said Ms. Longbons. "When it was all over, students wanted to know, 'Can we get jobs The chances of a UT graduate getting a job at the plant right out of high school are slim. The Harvester Works plant is still not doing much hiring.

Teachers can drum the impor- can be trained, Eddie Howard of Harvester Works said. "We're looking for people we can train, who are ready for changes, who are loyal and faithful," Mr. Howard said. "They've got to have a skill." Student and faculty recognition are part of UT's partnership. School officials eventually hope to incorpo- rate the needs of the business community the curriculum.

Representatives of the school and the plant began meeting earlier this year to plan a partnership strategy. Moline schools have followed UT's lead. A partnership between the Moline schools and Harvester Works was announced earlier this month. tance of education into their students' heads until they are blue in the face, but the message sinks in better when it is delivered by an employer, members of the group agreed. Mr.

Edgar asked about communication between teachers and employers. Employers are telling teachers what they need from future workers, superintendent Craig Whitlock said.
