THE DAILY DISPATCH AND ARGUS Thursday, May 3, 1990 E3 SportsDay Oops 'Accidental' homer by Roberts nips Cardinals i Quad-City's Triple A endeavor crosses bridge I 3) I 'Clearlywe bridged the governmental gap and no longer does the river Harry Pells Oa-' Vs-' m.f A' I By John Marx Staff sports miter The Quad-City AAA Committee thinks it crossed the bridge into Illinois Wednesday with its Triple-A ticket push. In an attempt to secure government and business help from the Illinois side of the Quad-Cities, the committee encountered what it feels is a favorable response Wednesday in a meeting at Velie's. "Clearly we bridged the governmental gap and no longer does the river divide," said committee chairman Harry Pells, who added the current Triple-A season-ticket commitment tote board stands at 1,950. "At least not on the issue of Triple-A baseball. I was really encouraged by the mayors and their support That kind of thing has been representative with everything." The committee has set May 15 as its deadline for reaching 2,500 season-ticket commitments.

Pells' remarks came after the meeting at which three Illinois cities were represented: Moline, by Mayor Allen McCaulley; Rock Island, by Mayor Mark Schwiebert; and East Moline, by City Councilman Dick Cooper, pinch-hitting for Mayor Chalmer Emmendorfer. "I'm encouraged by it," McCaulley said of the Triple-A effort. "I think the turnout was pretty decent, particularly when you consider it was 5 o'clock and some of the people probably hadn't yet gotten off work. "I think everybody is enthused about Triple A baseball. Heck, I can tell you, I am.

I think it's neat." The three cities have offered a way to bring the ticket program to their individual communities. "We are going to try in each of our three cities to open up" our city clerk's office and sell the options over the next two weeks if that will help," McCaulley added. "And I think it might." McCaulley says Moline will literally take the program to its employees. "We in Moline have one payroll coming up before the deadline," said McCaulley. "We will stick a flyer in the payroll and tell people to talk with their friends and neighbors." Now, Pells said, Illinois' busi- SAN DIEGO (UPD Mired in a slump, the San Diego Padres needed something to happen.

That's where Bip Roberts provided an accident. Normally a singles hitter, the pint-sized third baseman belted a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning Wednesday to help the Padres snap a five-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. After Jack Clark brought the Padres within 2-1 in the sixth with his fifth homer, Benito Santiago singled with two out Roberts then pulled a 2-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his third homer of the season. "All my home runs are accidents," said Roberts, who has one inside-the-park homer this year.

"It just so happened I hit that ball on the line and it didn't come down. Home runs for me are line drives (singles) up the middle." The Padres needed Roberts' sudden power. In their last six games of a 12-game home stand in which they finished 5-7 they batted just .214. Bruce Hurst, 1-3, gained his first victory since Sept. 17, 1989, allowing seven hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out eight.

Craig Lefferts worked two innings for his second save. Jose DeLeon, 2-1, allowed eight hits in six innings to take the loss. He walked two and struck out eight. Clark's homer was hit first hit off the right-hander in 14 at-bats and the first run off DeLeon in 2M innings at Jack Murphy Stadium. The Padres added a big insurance run in the eighth to make it 4-2 on Santiago's triple and Garry Temple-ton's foul sacrifice fly.

Left fielder Vince Coleman fielded the ball near the line instead of letting it land foul. "You can't knock him for catching that ball," St Louis Manager Whitey Herzog said. "He asked me about it and I told him, 'I don't think I would have let it (drop) that close to the Rex Hudler belted his first homer of the year with two out in the ninth to bring the Cardinals to 4-3, but that's as close as they could get St. Louis finished the road trip at 4-4. Dodgers 6, Pirates 2 Willie Randolph, who missed the previous five games with the flu, collected four hits including a club-record-tying three doubles and scored three times Wednesday night, sending Fernando Valenzuela and the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Phillies 14, Astros 4 Tom Herr doubled three times and drove in a career-high five runs and pitcher Dennis Cook collected two hits in an eight-run sixth inning Wednesday night lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 14-4 rout of the Houston Astros. Braves 8, Expos 1 Andres Thomas drove in five runs, four with his first career grand slam Wednesday night, helping thfc Atlanta Braves extend their winning streak to four games with an 8-1 rout of the Montreal Expos. Frank Viola struck out 11 in a six-hitter Wednesday night and Mike Marshall and Howard Johnson h(t home runs to lead the New York Mets to a 5-0 victory over the CirJ-cinnati Reds. Angels 3, Orioles 0 Bert Blyleven, 1-2, scattered five hits over six innings and struck oqt eight to secure fourth place on the all-time career strike out list as the Angels topped Baltimore 3-0. Athletics 2, Yankees 0 Dave Henderson led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to pace Oakland to its third shutout in its last four games.

Scott SandersoQ 3-1, struck out five and walked one in seven innings. Mariners 9, Red Sox 2 Greg Briley went 3 for 5 and drove in three runs to highlight attle's 16-hit attack. Pete O'BrieiJ and Edgar Martinez smashed back-to-back homers in the second inning to make it 2-0. Indians 3, Blue Jays 0 1 Bud Black allowed seven hits over innings and Candy Maldon-ado belted a solo home run in the seventh inning to lead Cleveland. Twins 8, Tigers 2 I Gary Gaetti hit two three-run home runs and David West pitched a three-hitter, leading Minnesota.

West 2-3, walked four and struck out five in pitching his first career complete game. Rangers 6, White Sox 3 I Pinch-bitter Geno PetraUi delivered a two-out two-run triple to lift Texas and end a three-game losing streak. Charlie Hough, 2-1, allowed 10 hits, struck out two and walked one. White Sox starter Greg Hib-, bard, 2-2, walked Mike Stanley and gave up a single to Scott Coolbaugh, setting up Petralli's blast in the sixth. nesses are a key target.

"We are going to knock on their doors until we make it," Pells said. "I'm hoping they all pick up on the commitment that the governments have." With the announcement for major league baseball expansion set for next month, Pells says the Quad-Cities could have a franchise by 1992. Pells also said the top candidates to receive major league baseball are Denver, and St. Petersburg, Fla. "From all indications, I see those two cities getting major league franchises started in 1993," added Pells.

"I also see 1992 as the starting date if the Quad-Cities receives a Triple A bid." Pells says a final drawing of the expansion of John O'Donnell Stadium has been completed. "The existing box seats will extend down the first and third base lines," said Pells. "Nothing (regarding the seat structure) be moved back. As it stands, there are about eight rows (of box seats) going back and the expansion leaves it that way. Box seat holders will remain very close to the action." 3.1 San Diego's Fred Lynn races toward third on a bloop hit by teammate Bip Roberts while St.

Louis second baseman Jose Oquendo watches the play. Lynn was thrown but at third, but the Padres won the game 4-3. (UPI) Cubs' coast swing ends on sunny note Duel turns to disaster as Q-C pitchers falter which is what we need to win these kindofballgames." The Giants have struggled in the early part of the season, especially at home, and Kevin Mitchell thinks a change of scenery will help the team. "I think this team is playing better on the road right now," said Mitchell who belted his fifth home run, "and it will be good to get away from Candlestick. The way we've been playing here, we've been putting too much pressure on ourselves trying to play up to the expectations of the fans." The Giants were to begin a four-game set in Montreal Friday while the Cubs headed home.

Cubs starter Mike Harkey improved to 3-1 on the season, despite giving up three homers over innings. He gave up seven hits and all four runs, walking one and striking out four. Paul Assenmacher allowed two ninth-inning runs but finished up to gain his first save since September 1988. SAN FRANCISCO (UPD The Chicago Cubs probably now wish their stay in California could be extended a few days, while the San Francisco Giants are glad to be leaving the West Coast. After a struggling start on their swing through California, the Cubs won their final three games including two against the Giants before boarding a plane to return home for a series with San Diego starting Friday.

"The plane ride home will be nicer than we expected," said Cubs Manager Zimmer. "The way things started on this trip, it looked like we were going to go 1-7. Wednesday, Andre Dawson collected three hits, drove in three runs and scored three times Wednesday to give the Cubs a 9-6 victory over the Giants, who have lost 11 of 13 at Candlestick Park this year. "It's nice to see our hitters come around," said Zimmer. Beloit starter Larry Carter and the Quad-City Angel tandem of Dave Neal and Roberto Castillo allowed not an earned run among them. The Angel hurlers, however, hurt themselves just enough to walk away 2-1 losers in Midwest League action before a 50-cent-beer night crowd of 3,078. Neal singlehandedly gave away a 1-0 lead in the fifth when gave up a leadoff single and followed two outs later with an errant pickoff attempt and-a pair of wild pitches. Then, in a curious visiting half of the seventh, Beloit loaded the bases on a pair of errors and a walk off Neal before Castillo came on and walked in the winning run on four straight pitches. Beloit improved to 13-9.

The loss drops the Angels to 11-10 for the season. Q-C manager Don Long, though, was relatively unfazed by his team's giveaway nature. "Anytime you lose, it's frustrating," the first-year field boss said. "But we'll try to learn from the mistakes we made. If you learn from your mistakes, tomorrow is another day." Long also expressed pleasure with Neal's performance.

The Angel starter dropped to 1-1, despite checking the winners on four hits and striking out three in 6W innings of work. "I wouldn't say he threw it away," Long said of Neal. "It got away from him a little bit, but he pitched well enough to win." of his WGN discussions. "My first hope is that Harry Caray continues to broadcast for about 10 more years. He's a delight.

(But) it was just going to be tough for me to (do) 162 baseball games. And beyond that, they've already got a (broadcast) team in place. They've got a strong team, led by Harry." An ABC executive emphasized his hiring won't effect Al Michaels. Michaels, ABC's Emmy Award-winning sportscaster, has been feuding with the network over an alleged violation of company policy. HI ACCIDENT IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS, mm thib Iff So did Beloit's Carter, who came in 0-3 and left a winner.

The Brewer righthander went the distance, allowing seven well-spaced Angel safeties, fanning five and walking nary a batter. He was nicked for a run only in the Q-C second, when Angel third baseman Corey Kapano led off on a single, then scored on a throwing error following a base knock by Angel catcher Larry Gonzales. Carter had to weather just one other threat. That was in the home half of the seventh, when the Angels loaded the bases on a leadoff single by Kapano and scratch safeties by Gonzales and, an out later, right fielder Rick Hirtensteiner. The would-be rally fizzled when designated hitter Ray Martinez tapped meekly into to a 1-2-3 double play.

Surprisingly, Long found comfort even in that rally-killer. He noted Martinez managed to put wood on the ball with two strikes on him, something hitting instructor Joe Madden had stressed earlier in the day. "I think we did a better job tonight of putting the ball in play with two strikes," the manager said, noting Kapano and first baseman Ronnie Ortegon had managed two-strike base hits earlier.
