C4 THE DAILY DISPATCH AND ARGUS Thursday, April 5, 1990 SportsPay 1990 Q-C crew will be 'Long' on aggressiveness for something to happen. We have to make it By John Marx Staff sports writer Aggressive is the word around the 1990 Quad-City An gel camp. New manager Don Long and Quad-City AAA season ticket opportunities are limited! Don't miss this opportunity to show your support and be a part of our winning team. I hereby pledge my support to Quad-City AAA Baseball andor the Quad-City Angels as follows: Ticket Packages 1. All options are fully refundable. 2 (number) 1990 Quad City Angels box seat tickets $175 per season ticket 3 (number) 1990 Quad City Angels reserved seat season tickets $125 per season ticket Signature Name his 26 players (25 rostered and medical rehabilitation project Charlie Romero) hit Quad-City sou Wednesday afternoon, vowing the 1990 season will be come a long way in a short time. I feel we put together the best possible dub we could to compete in the Midwest League." Long says the team's attitude and offense have been two things that have stood out this spring. "We have worked hard and swung the bat real well so far" said Long, whose club opens Midwest League play Saturday on the road at though we haven't been together the whole time, mixing in with the Palm Springs squad, we have worked well when together." Along the offensive lines, Long says this team will have to utilize speed and power. "It's not that we don't have guys to hit the long ball.

Rather, I feel we have to play according to our park," said Long. "You don't hit a lot of home runs at John O'Donnell Stadium, so we'll look to other avenues. "We will steal bases when we can and play hit-and-run quite a bit We can't sit back and wait happen." Long says the pitching staff is youg and raw, but has potential. "We have experienced relievers fa Bruce Vegely and John Marchese and some live arms in Marcus Moore and Erik Bennett," added Long. "As soon as we get accustomed to facing Midwest League batters on a daily basis we should be fine." Long, a coach for two seasons under former Q-C manager Eddie Rodriguez who is now at Double-A Midland, is looking forward to playing in renovated John O'Donnell Stadium.

"I was here when they started to work on the park, but haven't seen it since it's been fixed," he said. "I can't wait to get there and see what has changed. I can remember the bad times and now I'm looking forward to the good times." Long is hoping there will be plenty of them this season. an aggressive one. "Our position players are all aggressive," said Long, who Don Long Street managed the Angels' Rookie League team in Bend, the past two seasons.

"They all have excellent work habits and try to do all the right things needed to win baseball games. They go as hard as they can every moment on the field. "Our pitchers are of the same mold and have City State Zip Phone Note: If signing up as just an individual, put own address and phone number down and ignore business line. Box 4515 Davenport, Iowa 52808 Angels' Bennett ready for opening day mound call Field. "It will be my job to go out and throw strikes and let the people behind me do their job," said Bennett "I'll go until I've used up my pitch count and turn it over to the guys in the bullpen." And what about the possible cold weather for the native Californian? "I guess I'll have to get used to it" he said. "I'm not the only guy who will be in the cold. It will be tough for everyone, but growing up in Northern California did prepare me a little. I'll do the best I can and hope it gets warm soon." it's just another game.

It shows (Manager) Donny Long has some confidence in my ability and that I had a solid spring." Long, in his first season at the Q-C helm, is no stranger to what Bennett can do. The hard-throwing right-hander toiled for Long's Rookie League Bend squad last season. "Erik is steady and has a great deal of poise for someone just 21," Long said of the Angels' fourth-round pick of last year's June draft. "He's pitched at the college level (Cal State) and faced some stiff competition. You won't see him get too rattled when something goes wrong." At Bend, Bennett was 6-8 with a solid 3.47 earned-run average.

In 15 starts and 96 innings worked, he struck out 96 and walked just 36. "He is around the plate and has good stuff," said Long. "Erik knows how to pitch and rarely backs down from a situation. I'm looking for him to have a solid season for us." As far as Bennett is concerned, he's just looking to get his team off on the right foot in Saturday's 2:30 opener at Burlington's Community By John Marx Staff sports writer Just hand him him the pearL You needn't point, he knows his way to the mound. It doesn't matter when, where or who it's against, the Quad-City Angels' Erik Bennett just wants to pitch.

So Saturday's Opening Day assignment against the Burlington Braves is just another turn on the hill for the 21-year-old from Yreka, Calif. "There is nothing really special about it," said Bennett "It is an honor to be selected, but actually 'It's now up to the community to step to the plate. Triple A baseball is no longer just a pipe dream, it is a definite Harry Pells (50 'No longer do I think the Quad-Cities will get Triple A baseball now I know it will Being highly touted not enough for this prospect Richard Holtzman By John Marx Staff sports writer Marcus Moore does not believe what he reads or hears. To him, words do not win baseball games. However, doing the job on the field will.

Triple A. Moore listed as the team's No. 5 starter, with plans to bring the youngster along nice and slow. "There is no reason to be in a hurry," said Long. "Marcus will get his work.

He hasn't been exposed to a lot of pressure situations and big crowds, so we plan not to push things. But we're that way with all of the pitchers in our organization." Moore's goals for the 1990 season are simple: Throw strikes, improve his game and master his mound composure. .1 "I need to work on all parts of my game, especially how I handle adversity on the mound," he said. "I need to grow up and be in control of my emotions on the field. Most of all, just do what it takes for us to win." So when the 6-foot-5 right-handed flame-thrower is quizzed about his potentially bright baseball future, he tends to shy away.

"I've heard all the talk about me being touted as the No. 4 prospect in the California Angels minor league system," said the easy-going 19-year-old from Oakland, Wednesday at the Quad-City Airport. "It's nice to hear those things, but it doesn't mean much when I get out on the field. "I can't stand out there and tell the guy batting against me that I'm the Angels' No. 4 prospect They'll laugh and then try to knock my head off." Though rough around the edges, Moore is definitely worth the lofty status, according to Quad-City pitching coach Joe Georger.

"He's raw and rough, but the ability is definitely there," said Georger. "He's around the plate and works very hard. His curveball has improved and his change-up is coming along, but his fastball is awfully impressive. He does need work and I'm sure he'll get plenty of it" What Georger failed to mention is just how impressive Moore's heater can be, clocked consistently in the 90 miles-per-hour range. "That doesn't do anyone any good if I can't get people out" said Moore, who was drafted in the 17th round last June.

"But I'm learning. I'm going to make some mistakes, but I'm also going to work hard and do whatever I can to help us win." Angel manager Don Long has (Continued from page CI) involvement with minor league baseball," said Holtzman, "due mainly because of my Triple-A Tucson franchise. The net worth of the group combined is somewhere in the neighborhood of $25-30 million." Holtzman said what the area has done to meet the Triple A requirements was a prime reason they decided to make the ownership push. "Last June, I gave the Triple A committee certain guidelines that needed to be met to receive consideration from the rest of the Triple A owners," added Holtzman. "And they have met them all, and I see this as a project that will make it" TH fflllS Here's the pitch Here is a guideline for the sale of Triple-A ticket options: All money collected for the purchase of option on Triple-A season tickets will be put into an escrow account If the Triple-A association is unable to attract a Triple A franchise by Jan.

1, 1992, all money will be refunded. Interest gained from the escrowed account will be used to offset project costs. The Triple A ownership group headed by Richard Holtzman, Dr. Eric Margenau, Jay acton and Allan Levine, assures ticket priority will be given as follows: 1. Current Q-C Angels season ticket holders.

2. Current Q-C Angels ticket holders who have additional options. 3. Non-season ticket holders with options. If a Triple-A franchise is secured, option holders may exercise all or part of their options.

All options are fully refundable after Jan. 1, 1992. NEW at JIM'S SERVICES STORAGE FREE 10 TO 14 PASSENGERS ADDED TO OUR RENTALS Now You Can Get Everyone Together Enjoy A Great Outing. Reasonable Rates (Continued from page CI) no-risk proposition. The money taken in will be placed in escrow at Davenport Bank and, if the area is awarded a Triple A franchise, those purchasing options will be able to use those options as downpayment on a Triple-A season ticket.

If the Quad-Cities does not receive a Triple A franchise by Jan. 1, 1992, the ticket options will be fully refunded. have nothing to lose and everything to gain," said Pells. "If they elect not to exercise any or all of their options, they can obtain a refund." Quad-City Angels owner Richard Holtzman, who on Monday put together an ownership group willing to handle the financial responsibilities of Triple A baseball in the Quad-Cities, is excited about the area's chances. "No longer do I think the Quad-Cities will get Triple-A baseball now I know it will happen," said continued community support, I know it can be done." Holtzman added the area's geographical location is another positive factor in why he thinks a Triple A franchise will be awarded to the Quad-Cities.

i "You can't get any more centrally located than right here in the Quad-Cities," said Holtzman, who owns five minor league clubs including the Houston Astros' Triple A franchise in Tucson, Ariz. "The biggest expense for a Triple-A owner is air travel. Having a franchise in the Q(iad-Cities would minimize that expense because of the closeness to American Association cities such as Omaha, Indianapolis, and Des Moines, Iowa." "When I talk to other Triple-A owners these days, the Quad-Cities always pops up in the conversation," he said. "People in the baseball world know this is a realistic push for a franchise.

Every criteria has been met so far and the ticket drive will be the next hurdle jumped." 0 Plenty of RoomReasbnable Rates We Rent MOTOR HOMES Too! The Clubhouse 1465 19th East Moline 755-0032 Fri.
