The Tampa Tribune-Times Hernando-Citrus-Marion-Alachua-7 August 20-26, 1995 Soon the alien has led her to "depths of love and passion never before experienced by humans" which in Showtime lingo translates into a lot of hot sexy lovemaking scenes involving partial nudity. "The Hollywood Fashion Machine" at 8 p.m. Wednesday on American Movie Classics cable network is a look at film costumes and costume designers from the silent era to modern times. Jacqueline Bisset is the host. "Kirk" is a new sitcom from the relatively new WB network.

It debuts Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. (WTMV, Channel 32) and stars Kirk Cameron, formerly of ABC's "Growing Pains." It was not available for preview. Grant retired to Orlando and made many appearances in the Tampa Bay area in the 1980s. He died in an auto accident in 1985 while en route to a guest appearance at Cape Canaveral. He was 73. By today's standards, "Sky King" is primitive television. "I broke up in laughter when I saw the first episode," said Gus Lucas, the Family Channel's newly appointed senior vice president of programming.

In searching through the network's inventory, he noticed the title. "I'd vaguely heard of the show," he said, speaking to TV critics on the recent fall preview tour. "I thought it may be a Christmas show or an early black-and-white science fiction series that was around in the 1950s," he said. "It was corny to the point of being hilarious. The guy flying the plane couldn't even get it to fly right; it kept bouncing around in the air and landings were anything but smooth." HBO scores The HBO movies are a class act.

The pay network has piled up more Emmy nominations than ABC this year and is closing in on NBC and CBS. This week's new HBO movie is another winner. "The Tuskegee Airmen" is a fictionalized account of black fighter pilots in World War II. It is based on the adventures of Robert Williams, 73, of Pasadena, who was among the 450 black World War II combat fighter pilots known today as the Tuskegee Airmen. For more than 50 years, Williams has carried the story of these men inside him and it took HBO to bring his experiences to the screen.

"The Tuskegee Airmen," co-produced by Williams, stars Laurence Fishburne, Cuba Gooding Allen Payne and Mal-colm-Jamal Warner. The tale follows four recruits who not only battle the Nazis, but also battle cruel racial prejudice. "The Pentagon said blacks lacked sufficient intelligence and courage to be anything other than stevedores, or menial jobs in the military," Williams said during an interview in July during the television critics' fall preview tour in Pasadena. "I think we proved them wrong," he said. Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, Williams loved flying and was one of only 102 blacks who were licensed pilots when the war broke out.

His father was a successful auto-body repairman and owned a Piper Cub, and Williams learned to fly at an early age. Williams recalled that after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he tried to enlist and was told by a recruiter that "the Air Corps ain't taking no niggers." "That was my introduction to the war," he said. Later, he learned of a pilot-training program for blacks operating out of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The Tuskegee Airmen (the 332nd Fighter Group) were based in North Africa and Italy. Mostly, they escorted bombers manned by all-white crews.

Williams remembers overhearing racial slurs on his plane's radio from white bomber pilots who didn't trust their black escorts. But the Tuskegee Airmen proved themselves: The 450 pilots who flew in combat earned more than 850 medals, became the first pilots of the war to shoot down German jet fighters; sunk a German destroyer with machine guns; and never lost a bomber. Channel flipping "Amanda and the Alien" at 8 p.m. Sunday on Showtime is an offbeat made-for-cable movie about a San Francisco artist (Nicole Eggert) who befriends a fugitive, human-devouring alien who agrees not to eat her in return for her help.
