Moehle resigned shortly after a group of players parents met with Springstead Principal Susan Duval to discuss several complaints concerning the Eagles' coach, including the incident after the Jesuit game. Duval could not be reached for In 1989, a group of parents petitioned the Hernando County School Board for Moehle's dismissal, claiming, among other things, he cursed and used chewing tobacco in front of his players, and often disciplined them too harshly. The board voted 3-2 to keep Moehle, but the coach was shaken by the event. "I can't believe it went that far," Moehle said at the time.

"To me, it's scary. I could have lost my job." Junior varsity baseball coach Steve Whaley will take over as varsity coach, inheriting a 19-9 team that clinched the Sunshine Athletic Conference championship earlier this week. The Eagles will play in the Class 5A-Dis-trict 7 tournament next week in Dunedin. player in front of the rest of the team, grabbing him by the shoulder and yelling at him. Early the following morning the parents held a meeting with Duval, and later Thursday afternoon Moehle was summoned to the principal's office where he resigned his coaching position.

Moehle had been the team's coach since 1982 and also teaches economics and law studies at Springstead. He will continue to teach at the school but would not comment on the possibility of seeking a coaching job elsewhere. Moehle has received various coaching honors in the more than 13 seasons at Springstead, but this was not the first time he has had problems with parents. Parents were reluctant to talk about the situation, but one said a complaint had been made to Duval concerning Moehle last week. "This has been an ongoing situation," said one parent, who wished to remain unnamed.

"This last thing was just the straw that broke the camel's back." According to sources who requested anonymity, the team was riding back on a school bus from Wednesday's game in Tampa when Moehle became angry with one of his players for repeatedly joking around following a loss. Sources said Moehle confronted the PUBLISHER'S NOTICE: AH red estcrte octvertising in this newspaper is suotecr to the Fair Housing Act which makes It illegal to advertise 'any preference, limitation or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin, or an intention, to make CLASSIFIED INDEX ANNOUNCEMENTS CLASSIFICATION 1-49 FINANCIAL CLASSIFICATION 50-99 SEAL ESTATE CLASSIFICATION 100-149 MOBILE HOMES CLASSIFICATION 150-170 RENTALS CLASSIFICATION 199-249 EDUCATION CLASSIFICATION 250-299 EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION 300-399 MERCHANDISE CLASSIFICATION 400-499 BUSIHESS PROFESSIONAL SERVICE DIRECTORY CLASSIFICATION 1001-1450 FARMER'S MARKET CLASSIFICATION 500-549 RECREATION CLASSIFICATION 550-599 TRANSPORTATION CLASSIFICATION 600-649 ERRORS I Advertisers are encouraged to check the first appearance of their ad for corrections- The Tribune will be responsible for only one incorrect insertion. By DAVID WHITLEY Tribune Staff Writer TAMPA The semis have arrived from Miami, crammed full of the stuff fantasies are made of.

Pretty soon the chalk outlines will appear on the city streets. By this morning, it will have been built and they will have come. Men, women, boys, girls, old, young, fat, skinny, talented or totally uncoordinated. Name the category, there will be a place for them with Hoop-It-Up. The annual three-on-three street basketball competition is today and Sunday in downtown Tampa.

Where in downtown Tampa? Look on almost any street and you'll probably find a half-court game in progress. "Tampa's been unbelievable," said Pam Silvestri of Streetball Partners International, which runs Hoop-It-Up. "We're running out of space." This year's event has drawn 1,429 entries. At three players and one substitute a team, that means the streets will be turned over to 5,716 human beings. And good streets they are.

"Your streets are incredible," Silvestri said. Very few potholes, she said. Tampa tax dollars at work. The people who run Hoop-It-Up know good streets when they dribble on them. They began staging the weekend tournaments in 1986, when 487 teams showed up in Dallas.

The next year 1,400 teams entered. Now Dallas attracts more than 3,000 teams and the tournaments have spread to 50 cities in the United States and 30 overseas. Street basketball, largely an American invention, has become downright exotic. Madrid had 1,612 teams last year and its mayor predicts 5,000 teams will be playing there in three years. Not bad for a version of the game that was totally Greek to Europeans.

"They didn't know what street ball was," Silvestri said. "This is kind of a slice of Americana. Over there they were used to playing in gyms in an organized fashion." Which is not to say street ball isn't organized. There's a two-point arc 20 feet out that helps dictate strategy. Teams call their own fouls, an honor system that works well in most places.

"You're always going to have some people who take it too seriously," Silvestri said. "Most people realize this is all just for fun, however." That's as true in Peoria as it is in Paris, where the games are played in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Playing in the shadow of the Kennedy Street Bridge may not be as inspiring, but something has sure kept attracting people to downtown Tampa. The tournament began in 1989 with 357 teams. That jumped to 824 in 1983 and 1,367 last year, which makes it one of the top 10 Hoop-It-Up markets in America, and the largest that doesn't have an NBA team.

The equipment began arriving Monday from last weekend's tournament in Miami. The real work began after rush-hour Friday, when the streets were shut down and crews begin constructing 150 courts. The hooping begins 9 a.m. today. There will be about 165 divisions, ranging from Top Guns down to children.

"This just keeps getting bigger and bigger," Silvestri said. "People said five years ago it was just a fad. I guess we're seeing that's just not the case." i Saddlebrook tennis defaults raise concerns By LISA MAGENHEIMER Tribune Staff Writer SEMINOLE Two defaults by Saddlebrook doubles teams at Thursday's Class 3A-District 4 tennis tournament have raised ethical concerns among coaches and high school officials. Saddlebrook's boys and girls teams already had wrapped up state-tournament berths when the defaults occurred in the district finals. After five minutes of play at Seminole Lakes Racquet Club, Saddlebrook's No. 1 boys doubles team of Ivan Rodri-go and Luis Garcia defaulted, giving Berkeley Prep's Scott Zinober and Tejas Patel an uncontested victory and a state berth. Canterbury's No.

2 girls doubles team Leslie Kramer and Gina Craig also won without lifting a racket because Saddlebrook senior Callie Creighton had a prior commitment. Saddlebrook coach Scott Williams said Creighton, ranked 170th by the International Tennis Federation, defaulted because she had to catch an airplane to attend a debutante ball. Although Saddlebrook broke no rules, some observers disagreed with its motives, including the Florida High School Activities Association. Gary Pigott, an FHSAA assistant field director, recalled a prior regulation related to defaults. "We put in a regulation to make it more stringent for this stuff to go on," Pigott said.

"If you don't play to the conclusion of districts, you can't play at state that was the rule." That was the rule about two years ago, but not anymore. Officials felt the rule was penalizing players such as Saddlebrook's Stephanie Nickitas, who had a legitimate excuse for defaulting. Nickitas aggravated a knee injury and defaulted in the girls No. 1 singles and doubles giving Canterbury victories in both. Canterbury's Kristen Sanderson will play No.

1 singles and doubles with Janet Walker. "We felt like it was eliminating people who had real reasons," Pigott said. "The way it stands now, they have a right to default if they want to. But in my opinion, if you know you're not going to be at the conclusion of the tournament, you shouldn't be in the tournament. "It's really a question of ethics.

Personally, I think it's unethical to miss tennis all year or skip district matches and then plug them in at state. I guess they Saddlebrook were trying to be nice, since they were already going to state. But they should have played through." Berkeley girls coach Ann Thomas agreed. "They shouldn't be allowed to do that," Thomas said. "It's not fair to the other kids.

They should be allowed to win, fair and square." Williams said unusual circumstances dictated what occurred. "They were all separate situations," he said. "We did not anticipate the girls' problems. We planned on playing with America's 1 rated software program. Weekly cash flow.

The other guy turned out to be Southern California linebacker Jeff Kopp. Miami passed on Dar Dar in the seventh round, too. Both sides came together a day later, agreeing on a league minimum rookie free agent deal of $119,000 if he makes the final roster. In the bottom-line business of the NFL, there are no guarantees.

Dar Dar accepts the conditions, and is thankful for an opportunity. Still, a part of Dar Dar wanted to join the Bucs. "It would have been great to go home," he said. "But I couldn't let that weigh in my decision. This is a business, and I had to go where I thought it was best for me." Dar Dar comes to Miami after rushing for 853 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior at Syracuse.

In his career, he had 27 catches for 266 yards. As a return specialist in 1991, he brought a kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown against Florida. A year later, he had a 100-yard return for a touchdown in a win against Colorado. In Miami, though, he faces stern competition. The Dolphins usually keep five or six backs, depending on the injury situation.

Terry Kirby and Keith Byars are coming back from knee operations and might not be ready when training camp opens in July. The Dolphins also are high on Bernie Parmalee, Irving Spikes and fullback James Saxon. Dar Dar, 5-foot-9, 183 pounds, is hoping his 4.4-second Kirby Dar Dar rushed for 853 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior at Syracuse. speed in the 40-yard dash and the fact he plays special teams will earn him a roster spot. "I didn't base my decision if Terry Kirby would be ready," Dar Dar said.

"I had to say to myself, 'Terry Kirby will be Actually, Dar Dar always has been a fan of Kirby, a graduate of Clemson. Both wore No. 42 in college. "I looked at him as a guy named Kirby who wore the same number I did," Dar Dar said. "So I've checked him out." The two, though, have different running styles.

Kirby, at 6-foot-l, 218 pounds, is stronger heading into the line. An ideal feature back. At 5-9, 183 pounds, Dar Dar is projected as a situational player along the lines of Dave Meggett or Eric Metcalf. "My speed helps," Dar Dar said. "I can catch the ball coming out of the backfield.

And some teams had me projected as a receiver in the draft. I can line up at receiver." Dolphins running backs coach Tony Nathan said Dar Dar will get a shot as a punt returner. "He's been good on special teams," Nathan said. "From what I've seen, he has legitimate speed." ,11. LL LI JU3 YETU CI USI every match..
