"I don't portray women as sex objects or downtrodden," says Rorex, who has a graphic arts degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University. "I felt there are so many things that are beautiful about a woman's life, like pregnancy and breast-feeding. You don't see many paintings depicting that." Red Cloud Gallery has shown Rorex's works for the past five years.

Women, "especially women with babies," buy the work, she says. FOR ROREX, THE series has special meaning. "I live in eastern Oklahoma on a farm," she says, a single mother of two. "The majority of black families I knew when I was growing up had Indian blood." Rorex works in a studio off an old farmhouse that has been in her family for generations. Her grandfather who was part Cherokee and her grandmother who was half Cherokee settled on the land around the turn of the century. Because her ancestors did not register with the government, she says, she cannot enroll in the Cherokee tribe or participate in Indian art shows even though she is 25 percent Cherokee.

"Racially, I'm a Cherokee," she says! "Legally, no." Through her artwork, she says, people better understand their roots. "It's opened a lot of doors," says Rorex.
