Courthouse escapee makes TV's 'wanted poster' tonight By JACQUELINE SOTEROPOULOS Tribune Staff Writer DADE CITY Murder suspect Albert Leon Fletcher has beaten the odds, remaining on the lam for more than a year. But investigators hope an appearance tonight on the television show "Unsolved Mysteries" will change the escapee s luck. Fletcher's alleged crime spree and his 1995 escape from the Dade City Courthouse will be featured on the 8 p.m. show on Channel 8, according to the segment's field producer, Michael Palazzolo. The episode includes a re-enactment of his escape, when he burst from a sheriffs office van and fled into a swamp under a hail of gunfire. "Maybe it will generate some leads we can work on," said Pasco sheriff's spokesman Jon Powers. "We certainly hope so." The last tip on the case came in December when someone reported seeing Fletcher in the county. But the tip didn't pan out. Since his escape Jan. 11, 1995, local and statewide law enforcement has stepped up the pressure on Fletcher. He's one of eight people on the Florida Department 1 Fletcher of Law Enforcement's "most wanted" list, and the agency is offering up to $5,000 for a tip that leads to his arrest and conviction, Powers said. Ten months ago, Tampa Crime Stoppers offered $1,000 for information leading to Fletcher's capture. The offer still stands. Additionally, he's the No. 1 fugitive in Polk County, where he's charged with first-degree murder. A plea for information on Fletcher's whereabouts is listed on the Polk Sheriffs Office's World Wide Web home page. Fletcher is accused of killing 32-year-old Nelson Medina Oliveras in Lakeland in 1994. Prosecutors were seeking the death penalty. But first, Fletcher was to stand trial in Dade City on a Pasco burglary charge that prosecutors said was part of the crime spree that ended with the fatal shooting. He escaped the day his burglary trial was to begin. Fletcher's cousin and partner, Douglas D. Porter of Lakeland, was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole for 25 years. In 1994, "Unsolved Mysteries" traveled to Pasco to film a segment on slain Pasco schoolgirl Jennifer Odom. Although the show generated 50 tips for investigators, the case remains unsolved. 1 1 l You can find information about Albert Leon Fletcher 'i on the Polk County Sheriff s Office's World Wide Web home page through the Prodigy Web Browser on Tampa Bay Online.
