The Moline store concept is a prototype for about 80 new superstores to open across the nation this fiscal year, said store manager Tom Langford.

The store Long check merchandise in the office furniture dis- opened Wednesday near SouthPark Mall.

Davenport OfficeMax opened near NorthPark Mall about two years ago. The new Moline store offers a wider computer selection, more high-tech electronics, an expanded copy center in a larger retail area than the Davenport store, Mr. Langford said. The store's Business Service Center features high-speed and self-service photocopying, faxing and printing, from business cards to stationery letterhead and forms. The company has hired 55 to 60 employees to operate the office products store, Mr.

Langford said. A grand opening celebration will be held Sunday in conjunction with some new stores open- ing in SouthPark Mall. OfficeMax based in Cleveland, Ohio, opened its first superstore less than seven years ago. Today, the retail chain operates more than 390 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico. The first OfficeMax in Hawaii will open later this year.

The company's primary target market is the small and medium-size business employing one to 100 workers. Also targeted are the vast home-office market and individual consumers, said Michael Feuer, OfficeMax's president and chief executive. OfficeMax also focuses on schools, municipalities and governmental agencies. "OfficeMax can offer its customers significant savings because of the company's 390-plus buying power," Mr. Feuer said.

OfficeMax typically eliminates traditional intermediaries, wholesalers and distributers, and purchases directly from manufacturers in high quantities, passing on the savings to its customers, he said. OfficeMax has a one-tier pricing structure. Its stores are open to the public without membership fees. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Moline. THINK 75Q ML 1 IE Source: Metrobank McDonald's liable in tired worker's crash SALEM, Ore. (AP) McDon-. aid's is liable for damages in an auto accident caused by an employee who worked unusually long hours, the Oregon Court of' Appeals ruled Wednesday. The employer "was much like a bartender who served alcoholic beverages to a visibly intoxicated person who then caused an automobile accident that harmed another," the court said in a 5-4 ruling.

The ruling upheld a jury's decision that McDonald's must pay $375,000 to Frederic Faverty, who was injured when a car driven by Matt Theurer crossed the center line and hit his car in 1988. Theurer, 18, was killed after nodding off while driving home after working more than 12 hours in a 17-hour period. Though the restaurant had policies against split shifts and against high school students working past midnight more than once a week, Theurer volunteered to do so more frequently when asked by managers. McDonald's will appeal to the state Supreme Court, spokeswoman Jane Hulbert said from the company's Oak Brook, 111., headquarters. The dissenting judges warned of "grave consequences" to employers if they are made potentially liable for tired employees' off-premises negligence.
