The Tampa Tribune. Monday, June 27, 1994 4-BayLife Best Bet 'Roseanne' actor has made career out of lucky breaks "Green Dolphin Beat," p.m., Fox "I was too practical-minded at the time to think of it acting as a career," she says. "I didnt think I'd ever be able to make a living at it. I thought I might be a German teacher, I also went through an anthropology phase." But she acted in some plays in college. This cop drama pilot hasn't found a network home yet.

John Wesley Shipp and that's where she met the people who eventually banded together to form the Steppenwolf Theatre group, including fiarv Sinese. John Mai- mm lj kovich, Terry Kinney I i sne married in 1983. She believes that pAV meeting these people church basement in Highland Park, a Chicago suburb, were well-received and launched the company. "We never worried about what we were doing," she says. "We were very young, and I guess we all assumed we'd make money at it somehow.

We were rehearsing or having a play every night, partying after the play and then getting up to do our day job I was always a secretary. We saw only each other for six straight years, until we added some more people to the company." Metcalf went to New York when the group took "Balm in Gilead" there for a nine-month run. She won an Obie for her portrayal of Darlene. "I stayed there a little while extra on my own, and that's when I got the first agent I'd ever had and the first movie, 'Desperately Seeking And then I made the only move I made on my own, and that was to L.A. I'd never been there before." At that time, she was still married to Perry, father of her 10-year-old daughter, Zoe, though they were no longer living together.

She says, "We stayed married for quite a long time just because we couldn't afford to get a divorce." The first week Metcalf was in Los Angeles she got the job on the "Roseanne" show. "It's been a series of lucky breaks," she says. "I can't complain. I went there really to look for movies. It didn't cross my mind to do TV.

But I knew Roseanne was supposed to be really funny, and I knew John Goodman from hanging around New York. So I went on the audition." When she found she had to sign a five-year contract, Metcalf hesitated. But she finally did and has never been sorry, though she says she prefers theater first, movies second, then television. "Even though you do TV in front of a live audience, there's nothing really resembling theater at all," she says. "It's nice to have the audience there, but it doesn't have anything to do with how the show comes out" The cast starts work on its seventh season this summer.

Metcalfs recent pregnancy with her son Will, now 7 months old, was featured in some scenes last season. "I wanted to use my real stomach because I've never seen that done on TV. When I look back at it, I can't believe I actually did it because it was huge. Some people thought it was fake, but it was real." Metcalf and her children live in Los Angeles with baby Will's father, actor Matt Roth, who has appeared on the "Roseanne" show. Metcalf says she stays out of the Hollywood scene and doesn't feel any media pressure.

"I just go to work," she says, "and come home and go to Girl Scouts or something like that I always forget how many people see the show every week. At my daughter's school a lot of the kids' parents are actors; L.A. is just that way." By NORMA LIBMAN of the Chicago Tribune Don't talk about five-year plans to Laurie Metcalf. She never had one, doesn't have one now and doesn't plan on ever having one. And who can blame her? She has come a long way on what she calls "chance" and is very happy with her life the way it is.

The way it is includes an Emmy for her performance as Roseanne's sister on the ''Roseanne" show, five Joseph Jefferson Awards for Chicago theater, a 1985 Theatre World award and an Obie. She is an ensemble member of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company part of the original group and has appeared in several films, including "Desperately Seeking Susan," "JFK" and "Blink." "I was always very shy," says Metcalf, 38, explaining the nature of chance in her life. "I don't know where I got up the courage to audition for plays in high school, which is a really rough thing to do. But I was in two plays in high school, and I really liked doing that." High school was in Edwardsville, 111., where Metcalf was raised along with a younger brother and sister. Her mother is a librarian; her father, who is now deceased, was a comptroller for Southern Illinois University.

She had no thoughts of acting as a career, and she entered Illinois State University, at Normal, as a German major. the World Shipp and Jeffrey Sams by star in the Aaron Spelling production, which takes a look at cops in a big city. Green Dolphin is a precinct where the rules are broken in both the personal and professional lives of young cops. Sams plays a black detective who is teamed with a white partner (Shipp), and they rarely see eye to eye. Also tonight: Tony Danza portrays a small-time drug dealer who becomes the big-time target of gangsters and cops in a rebroadcast of "Dead and Alive," at 9 on ABC.

Danza stars as Gus Farace, who hid from the cops and feds who wanted him alive and from the gangsters who wanted him dead. Rick Harmon and acting with them, Metcalf which she calls "just a fluke, just something to do in the summer," made it possible for her to be an actor. "If I had wanted to do it on my own," she says, never would have stayed in acting, I don't think. I would have maybe auditioned for a couple of things outside of college, not gotten them and just dropped it. I would never have moved to New York or L.A.

on my own and actually given it a 100 percent shot I would have just been too intimidated by the whole idea. I owe everything I've done to Steppenwolf Theatre." She says it was also a fluke that within the group there were some good directors, so the first plays the theater group put on, in a Talk Shows Sarasota station's future uncertain By RICK HARMON Tribune Staff Writer 1 TAMPA Now that the network swapping in the Tampa Bay area has ended, attention has turned to Sarasota, where WWSB, Channel 40, will lose its affiliation with the ABC network. ABC has lined up WFTS, Channel 28, as its new affiliate, replacing WTSP, Channel 10. Part of the deal requires ABC to drop WWSB as an affiliate, much to the displeasure of the Sarasota station. But, according to Anthony C.

Malara, president of CBS Affiliates Relations, it is possible his network would be interested in adding WWSB to the CBS family. "We're not sure how necessary having an affiliate in Sarasota is, but we're looking at it," Malara said. "We've had conversations with WWSB, but the bottom line is we're going to do what's in the best interest of the network." At one time the extra ABC affiliate was needed because of weak signals from WTSP and WEVU, Channel 26, in Bonita Springs. But with a strong CBS affiliate in Fort Myers (WINK, Channel 11) and 82 percent cable saturation in the Sarasota area, another affiliate may not be necessary. Malara would not predict when the affiliate changes would occur in Tampa.

However, he said the current New World Communications Inc. contract between WTVT, Channel 13, and CBS expires Nov. 23, and he would expect an earlier resolution since "it's to everybody's advantage." This means NFL football games, which will be carried by Fox this fall, would move from current Fox affiliate WFTS back to new Fox station WTVT, which carried CBS' coverage last year. The move could occur during the season if an agreement to switch affiliations comes after Labor Day. For prime-time highlights, broadcast and cable movie summaries see Florida Television Magazine in Sunday's Tampa Tribune.
