Former WTOG, Channel 44, anchor John Summer received an Emmy for a series on a man who claimed he was wrongly imprisoned. The entire staff of 10 News was honored with an Emmy for spot news coverage of an oil tanker collision in Tampa Bay. WTSP's president and general manager, Steve Mauldin, was the only general manager in the state to win an Emmy for editorials. Channel 10 photographer Yagle won an Emmy for his work on a special, "Roll of the Dice," about the vote on legalizing casinos.

New Channel 10 reporter Michelle Caruso-Cabrera won an Emmy for reporting work that she had done while working at Univision. 'NewsHour' saved Robert MacNeil of PBS' "MacNeilLehrer NewsHour" had planned to retire next year but now will stick around because of a new deal to pump money into the newscast MacNeil and his co-anchor (and business partner) Jim Lehrer are selling a two-thirds stake in their show to the nation's largest cable operator, Tele-Communications based in Colorado. Neither side would give a cash value for the investment MacNeil still plans to stop co-anchoring next fall to assume a production role. This should put an end to rumors that "NewsHour," long plagued by budget shortfalls, will quietly expire. Quite the contrary: With a cash infusion from Liberty Media TCI's programming arm MacNeilLehrer could become a major producer, tunneling educational programming and documentaries to cable services, including those in which TCI also has a stake.

MacNeil said, "Joining forces with the most influential cable interest in the country will let us widen our scope, develop more programming and have one foot firmly planted in the multichannel universe of the future." To reinforce this cozy relationship, MacNeilLehrer will pull out of New York and consolidate all operations in Washington. Anchors Lehrer and MacNeil have owned the company, but after the sale, they will own only the remaining chunk. Both men have reportedly been told there will be no interference from TCI bosses. Channel surfing Tonight at 8:30, NBC moves the Gene Wilder sitcom "Something Wilder" into the 8:30 time slot finally replacing the ill-fated "Martin Short Show." Wilder plays a middle-age advertising executive with a young wife and toddlers. Maria Maples guest stars tonight when Gene takes his little tykes on a camping trip.

Grace slips on a driveway and visits a holistic healer who tries to work out her hostile feelings as well as her physical pain on "Grace Under Fire" at 9:30 on ABC. "Dateline NBC" at 10 tonight goes undercover to expose fake fortune tellers. Is there any other kind? A Tribune Staff, Wire Service Report WTSP. Channel 10, won 13 Emmys this past weekend in the Southeastern regional competition, with six of the awards going to anchor Dave Wagner for his "Changing Cuba" special. The competition is sponsored by the Suncoast Regional Chapter of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Emmys were handed out Saturday in Miami. WTVT, Channel 13, picked up two Emmys: one for a documentary special, "In the Blink of an Eye," by reporter Deanna Lawrence that looked back on the unsolved killing of Jennifer Odom; and another for the investigative work of Kevin Kalwary in a probe of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. involving allegations that it tricked people into buying whole life insurance policies when they thought they were investing in retirement plans. WFLA, Channel 8, won five Emmys. Reporter Craig Smith earned an Emmy for spot news coverage.

Channel 8's total included two Emmys for promotional work and one for O'Leary) in Richardson his plan to build a "more power" Christmas display on the roof, and Jill (Patricia Richardson) leaves Tim out in the cold. Come Monday, when the big affiliate switch happens, Channel 13's new slogan will be "13 Eyewitness News: Florida's News Leader." The folks there figure that with seven hours of local news and the biggest news staff in town, they're aiming for statewide, if not national fame. Meanwhile, the new news kid on the block, WFTS, Channel 28, will launch the 28: Tampa Bay News" with the line "We're Working Hard to Be Your Favorite." In anticipation of the move, WTSP, Channel 10, already has started using the tag line "Keep Your Eye on 10," referring to the "eye" in the CBS logo. That's because on Monday, Channel 10 drops ABC and joins the CBS network. Channel 28 drops Fox and joins ABC.

WFLA, Channel 8, remains with NBC. Channel 13, dropping CBS, is joining the Fox network but only will have a couple of Fox's prime time programs each night. The emphasis will be Channel 13's local news Identity. This three-way switch has confused some viewers. Officials at channels 10 and 13 report receiving calls from those who wondered if the local staffs at each station would be moving along with the programming.

Callers have wanted to know if the stations would be swapping offices and studios, too. No, the buildings and local staffs at each station stay put However, Channel 28 will be building a new studio to house its expanded staff. All three stations are bracing for more viewer confusion when the shuffle happens Monday. "Some viewers don't even know what an 'affiliate' is," says David Whitaker, president and chief executive officer of Chan-pel 13. Affiliates are stations that have contracted to carry a network's programming.

All this week, the three stations involved will be trying to explain the switch with special reports, such as tonight's "One on One With Kathy Fountain" at 8 on Channel 13. She'll be reporting live from a FoxChannel 13 party in St. Petersburg, where Fox "stars" will be checking out their new affiliate.
