With the big-screen version of her "Interview With the Vampire" just going into national release and the comic sendup of her "Exit to Eden" still in theaters, this weekend's portrait of the author on the Lifetime cable network seems especially apt.

But "Anne Rice: Birth of the Vampire" at 10 p.m. Sunday, is a visually stunning, emotionally stirring film that's a work of art by itself. The BBC film, seeks to explore the great mystery about the 53-year-old author of such best sellers as "The Vampire Lestat" and "The Witching why she seems so obsessed with death and the walking dead. There seems little question that the death of her young daughter from leukemia was the event that plunged Rice into the long, deep depression that gave birth to her tales about haunted creatures. In Rice's memories of her alcoholic mother and her own long descent into alcoholism, we can understand and appreciate her ability to write so convincingly about cravings that consume one's soul.
