Connie Mack, now faces a new dilemma: a move by some state Democrats to organize In Mack's support.

In a request sent Wednesday to state Democratic chief Ter-rie Brady, 12 prominent Democrats asked that they be allowed to form a "Democrats for Mack" committee. Among those signing on to the Mack letter: former Lt. Gov. Wayne Mixson and former Tampa Mayor Bill Poe. "Connie Mack deserves our support in fact, broad bipartisan support for re-election," reads the letter, signed by Tampa lawyer Mike Jamieson.

"It would be ironic if our party, a champion of free speech, were to deny us the opportunity as Democrats to express our conviction," the letter said. Response from state Democratic officials was swift Wednesday: "Tell them not to hold their breath," said Lynda Russell, the party's executive director. Under an obscure state law, the group must seek the state Democratic Party's approval to use the word "Democrats" in its title. Four years ago, Republicans backing Democrat Lawton Chiles for gover nor asked their party's OK to name their group "Republicans for Chiles." The request was denied. Jamieson said his group's letter was a challenge to a "ludicrous state law," not a political maneuver.

"This, to me, is a free-expression, free-speech issue," he said. He denied the request was an effort to dissuade Tampa Mayor Sandy Freedman from running against Mack, but said he believed Florida would be better served if the Democratic Party conceded the Senate race to Mack. Poe, Tampa mayor when Freed-man was on the city council, added: "We're not trying to spoil anybody." Discussions about forming the group began weeks before speculation began about Freedman's potential campaign, he said. "At this point I plan to support Mack," Poe said. But that could change, he said, depending on which Democrat emerges as Mack's opponent.

For months, Democratic leaders have scoured fruitlessly for someone to challenge Mack in November. Statewide polls indicate that even a well-known, and well-financed, Democrat would have a difficult time ousting Mack. Mack, who lives in Cape Coral, meanwhile has been steadily adding to his campaign war chest, which held more than $2 million at the end of the year. Russell conceded that her party has yet to find a credible challenger to Mack, adding that she hoped Freedman would decide to run. Freedman could not be reached for comment, but she remains undecided, her spokesman said Wednesday.

Students shot SAN DIEGO Three teenage boys were injured in a drive-by shooting Wednesday at a magnet school that some students say is beset by racial tensions. Governor escapes OKLAHOMA CITY The. Oklahoma House narrowly voted Wednesday against conducting an impeachment inquiry of Gov. David Walters, who pleaded guilty last year to violating campaign finance laws. Widow files suit HOUSTON A widow filed a wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday against a home- owner who shot her husband to death because he thought her spouse was a burglar.

Andrew De Vries, a 29-year-old Scottish businessman, was killed last month as he banged on the back door of Jeffrey Agee's Houston home. De Vries, winding up a night on the town with another Scottish businessman, was lost and had gone knocking on doors in the neighborhood, police said. He had been drinking, but his blood alcohol level was below the legal limit Nabors still critical LOS ANGELES Jim Nabors remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday, two days after receiving a liver transplant. The 61-year-old actor will be hospitalized for at least a month so doctors can watch for signs that his body is rejecting the liver.
