The Quad City Angels have their longest winning streak two1 games for the young season, defeating the Springfield Cardinals 4-1 on a nippy night at John O'Donnell Stadium Friday night. The win, before 820 fans who braved the weather, gives the An gels a 3-1 series lead over the Re-dbirds. The Angels push their season mark to 3-5. Springfield drops to an even 4-4. All of the run production for Quad-City came in the first inning. Leftfielder Charlie Romero legged out an infield hit to get things started. Third baseman Bob Rose singled to left with Romero running on the pitch to put runners at first and third. Designated hitter Bill Robinson then got a base hit to score Romero and put the Angels' first run on the board. After Chris Threadgill struck out, Tony Rasmus reached on a fielder's choice. Catcher Jeff Gay singled to score Rose to put the hosts up by 2. Two more RBI singles followed one by shortstop Cesar delaRosa and the other by first baseman Mario Molina to cap the four-run first. All nine batters went to the plate in the inning. "A lot of good things had to be happening for the whole batting order to hit in the first inning," said Angels coach Eddie Rodriguez. "It just bears down to doing what they have to do at the plate and being real selective and putting the ball in play." The Cardinals had their chances as they saw their leadoff man reach base, including three doubles, in five innings. Their only run came in the seventh inning when Frank Abreu led off with a base hit. An error by Rasmus put the second batter, Chris Gilkey, on base and allowed both baserunners to advance an extra base, and Alex Ojea came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to score Abreu. The Angels had an opportunity to add to the score in the bottom of the eighth. They saw the bases loaded with one out, but failed to bring any runners home. The Angel skipper was pleased with his team's performance. "The kids are doing a lot of things well. They are running the bases aggressively, and it helps when you hit the ball," Rodriguez said. "Thirteen hits count for a lot. "It was a superb outing for Roberto Hernandez. We got the timely hitting with the good pitching that I've been after for a while." Hernandez went 7 innings to earn the victory. Steve Dunn finished the game and retired all four men he faced. Frank Potestio took the loss for Springfield.
