Normal employment has kept pace with population In Illinois, but the period between 1920 and 1930 witnessed significant changes In types of work at which the residents of the state earn a living, according to a classification of gainful workers prepared by the United States census bureau. While the number of persons "gainfully occupied" Increased in the ten-year interval from to 3,184,875, the percentage of the population ever the age of 10 years so occupied was almost identical In the two years, 50.7 percent In 1920 and 50.3 -percent In 1930. John and Peggy and the Little Black Clock sat upon a low mountain far, far away from people. Nearby was the nest of the members of the golden eagle family. And the members of the family were going off on trips gathering food such as a duck or a prairie dog, which, too, was food their cousins liked, although their cousins were very fond of fish. When they called to one another their calls were long and loud and very shrill and piercing. John imagined how frightened some little creatures might be, hearing these calls, but they seemed beautiful to him.

It was as though they owned the forests and were mighty rulers of the air, the mountains and the dark, deep, lonely woods. "The golden eagles never live where there are many people. In fact, they choose a part of the country as far from communities as possible," said the Clock. "Where they live they are the monarches of the air and land. Often a pair will be rulers over a certain section.

"But it seems they should have certain rights. They do not wish to bother people. They wish to be alone off in their lonely mountains or hills. "Eagles have plenty of faults," he continued, "but there is something very thrilling about their flying so very, very high over the great mountains, building their nests at the tops of such mighty trees."
