Adler The purpose of education to prepare the student for a lifetime of learning, Dr. Mortimer Adler said at Augustana College last night, and he added "Education in America is failing." The philosopher and educator, speaking at the last meeting of this year's Concert Lecture series, said this is the first time in the history of the world that it is necessary to educate all the people. "In previous centuries, only the children of the privileged classes went to school," he said. "These were the 10 per cent of the population who were exempt from grinding toil. "They weren't sent to school to prepare them to earn a living because they didn't have to.

They were sent to school for two' reasons: One, they were going to have a large amount of free time. "The other reason is that they were going to become the ruling Cement Masons Get 95 Cents Over 3 Years Striking cement masons returned to work today after the union reached agreement with the Quad City Builders Association on a new contract Saturday. The new contract reflects a 95-cent an hour increase for members of cement masons Union Local 544. The amount will be spread over a three year period. The terms of the contract include an immediate increase of 37 cents an hour for union members.

The union members will receive an additional 32 cents on May 1, 1968 and 26 cents on May 1, 1969. The cement masons had been on strike since May 1, when their old contract expired. It paid masons $4.17 an hour. It was reported that the union retained its double time on Saturday clause, one of the stumbling blocks in the settlement talks. The other 90 per cent didn't count; their bodies were spent with toil and they were subhuman. But today, because of the democratic and industrial revolutions, everyone counts, one has some free time, and everyone should have a liberal education to prepare them for a truly human life, he said. Everyone has the privilege of citizenship, and only liberal schooling and a continuation of learning in adult life can prepare man for the responsibility of citizenship, Adler said. Education in past ages was a preparation for the pursuits of leisure, but leisure does not mean recreation, play, or diversion, Adler emphasized. The roots of the word "leisure" are the same as the roots of the word "learning," he said.

"Leisure activities are all those that lead to moral, intellectual and spiritual growth. Leisure is for the advancement and dissemination of learning." Learning is something that person must do all his life, Adler said, if he is to be truly human. Schooling is the least important part of education, he said. His thesis for the speech was "schooling is at best only a preparation for the kind of learning that adults can and must do." "Our ancestors understood that youth is an insuperable obstacle to education," he said. "Because of their shallowness of experience, the basic things to be learned cannot be learned in youth.

"With every year of your life your capacity for learning increases." Adler said. He explained that he was speaking of the kind of learning that comes from dealing with ideas, from thinking. In the next 50 years, Adler said, a situation will come to pass in which everyone will have as much free time as our ancestors of the propertied classes. The amount of work time will decrease; people will retire younger and have a longer life span. "The obligation of our society is to give all the children the liberal education they need to know how to use their free time.

If we don't they will consume their free time in corrupting and degrading themselves and society." Sending children to school so that they can be a success in business and make a lot of money is the worst possible reason, he said. Adler said that all children should have an equal educational opportunity, but that does not mean an equal amount of the teacher's time. The bright children are the easiest to educate, and need the least amount of guidance from the teacher. Slower children, he went on, need more of the teacher's time, even to the point of one teacher per child. This will mean using teachers aides, such as retired nessmen and mothers.

"The ideal society is one in which everyone is both a teacher and a learner," Adler said. Asked about the problem of culturally deprived children, Adler said, "We now know that a child who is culturally deprived up to the age of! 5 is almost unreclaimable. Schoolaling should start at 3, during the richest days of WASHINGTON (AP) Eight pacifists who took part in a sitin at the Pentagon last week were on a hunger strike today at the District of Columbia jail.
