BURLINGTONFREEPRESS.COM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 27A sports A touchdown on the sec- ond play from scrimmage. Two more scores in the span of six sec- onds to close out a 27-point first quarter. This Friday night belonged to the Bur- lington Seahorses. They came ready to play. Manny Dodson and Kevin Garrison each ran for two touchdowns and an un- relenting defense kept South Burlington in check as Burlington cruised to a 41-7 Division I high school football victory at Buck Hard Field.

Less than 24 hours after the school dis- trict sports programs to continue to play games despite a teachers strike, the Seahorses (3-0) acted composed and fo- cused in front of a packed student section for homecoming weekend. needed to win. We got to play this game, we worked so hard to get said Dodson, among the student-athletes who spoke with the BHS administration on Thursday. the end, it was just an- other football game, but proud we got Interim head coach Adam Cate said the players stepped up and advocated for themselves during a strange week. were very adult about it and they should be commended for said Cate, taking the place of longtime BHS head coach Brennan Carney, a teacher at the school.

the end of the day, the abil- ity to play sports is very pure and they have to get wrapped up in things that are out of their Dodson finished with 82 yards on nine carries while Garrison carried the ball 14 times for 100 yards. Tenzin Kelley hauled a 33-yard touchdown from Gunnar Bier- baum to give BHS a 34-0 halftime lead. For South Burlington (1-2), Camden Chiari had a 2-yard TD late in the fourth quarter. My three thoughts from Friday night: Seahorses nearly flawless in first half On first offensive play, Bierbaum faked a handoff and launched a pass down field to Ryan Mitchell on a cross pattern. Mitchell hauled in the 46- yard connection, giving the Seahorses first-and-goal from the 1, where Dodson powered is way into the end zone on the ensuing play.

we got that first touchdown, I was so Dodson said. The Wolves were forced to punt on their opening drive Nelson Nyal chased down quarterback Kevin Papa- riello for the first of his two sacks and the Seahorses, despite two turnovers in the early going, found the end zone three more times in the frame. A four-play scoring drive, set up by three first-down runs by Garrison, yield- ed second TD, a bruising, 22- yard dash up the middle with 4:18 to play in the quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Kelley stripped the returner inside the 5-yard line and walked into the end zone for a 21-0 lead. The advantage grew to 27-0 on Garri- 7-yard score, a one-play drive gift- wrapped by the Wolves following an er- rant snap on a punt attempt.

that pent up energy from this week and angst of everything that fear of not knowing and that was a great first quarter, it propelled Cate said. really proud of the BHS closed the half on the Bierbaum- Kelley TD hook-up. Kelley ran straight to the goal line and rose high to snare the ball away from a South Burlington cor- nerback before falling to paydirt. Slow start dooms Wolves South Burlington gave BHS a short field on the first series. Then an offsides penalty meant more free yards for the Seahorses.

It was a sign of a troubling night to come for the Wolves. South Burlington punted five times and turned the ball over on downs once during its six possession in the first half. And if not for a pair of Andrew Cunning- ham interceptions, the Wolves might have dug themselves an even bigger first- half deficit. The Wolves opened the second half with their best-looking drive, one that fea- tured a fourth-down conversion and a BHS penalty to prolong the drive in the red zone. But the eight-plus minute pos- session yielded zero points; Kelley pro- duced his second sack to push the Wolves well out of striking distance.

Robbie Mafuta paced the ground attack with 61 yards. Chance caught seven balls for 46 yards. Defense is strength Why did South offense, which had six touchdowns through its first two games, struggle on Friday night? Look no further than team speed as the reason. From pursuit of the quarter- back to the run-stuffing abilities of Dod- son, Brody Snow and front seven might very well be the calling card. are fast, super-fast.

We are very athletic. We have big guys, but they can Cate said. Burlington allow the Wolves to get in a rhythm. The Seahorses knifed into the backfield to upend running plays. They were alert on screen passes.

And they jumped slant routes. The BHS defense has allowed nine points to Burr and Burton, seven to Rice (the other score was a fumble return) and now just seven in the Week 3 triumph. defense is definitely a strength of Dodson said. The Seahorses play at Brattleboro while the Wolves head to BFA-St. Albans next Friday.

Baltimore has lost nine of 10 as it con- tinues to fall out of playoff contention. Montgomery (8-7) scattered four hits in his fifth start against the Orioles this yerar. Manager Buck Showalter, pitching coach Roger McDowell and a trainer came out to check on starter Jeremy Hel- lickson (8-10) after a two-out walk to Chase Headley in the third.

After a brief discussion and no warmup throws, Hel- lickson remained in the game and walked Aaron Judge on four pitches. Gregorius followed by driving a 1-0 fastball into the right field seats, giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead. His career-high 23 home runs tie Derek Jeter (2004) for the second-highest total as a shortstop in franchise history, trailing 24 in 1999. Bird chased Hellickson in the fourth, hitting a shot deep into the second deck in right that doubled the score to 6-0.
