The circus also has used Venice as its winter home for annual monthlong rehearsals. In the meantime, the circus is looking for a new borne for its clown college and its winter rehearsals. Ireland said it may take as long as a year to find a permanent home in Florida or another warm East Coast state. Ireland presented the circus' "Silver Smile Award" to the city of Tampa for its work with the Boys and Girls Clubs and to the Florida State Fair Authority for making people smile each year. The state fair is letting the circus use the grounds for rehearsals.

Baraboo is the site of the Circus World Museum and the hometown of the five famous Ringling brothers. "It's a fitting place for the school especially in conjunction with our celebration of 200 years of the circus in America," said Rodney Huey, vice president of public relations for Ringling Bros. The circus's clown college is free, but not easy. Students attend classes six days a week for 12 hours a day to learn the art of clowning, including juggling, acrobatics, mime, costume construction, makeup, choreography and safely working with explosives. Nelson said.

The top graduates are awarded circus contracts and become a part of Clown Alley touring 95 cities and putting on 500 to 600 shows annually. Nelson said. By MELORA RATTAN Tribune Staff Writer ORIENT PARK Dana Nelson won't quit clowning around He can't it's his job. A professional clown since be graduated a decade ago from the Ringling Bros, and Barnum Bailey Clown College in Venice, Nelson and a few of bis fellow alumni were on band Monday at the Florida State Fairgrounds doing what they do best entertaining. In a 30-minute workshop.

Nelson and the other circus funnymen taught 29 youngsters from the Boys and Girls Dubs of Tampa Inc. how to juggle with different size balls and bowling pins. Not everyone was a natural. Genny Santiago, 9, from the Dover club couldn't get the bang of it, but she said she'll keep practicing. "Many of our children are from disadvantaged families who don't get the chance to go to a circus and see said Jeanette Green, social recreation director for the Dover club.

"They're excited. It's not an everyday thing." But juggling lessons weren't the only reason for circus personnel's brief visit to the fairgrounds. The 25-year-old clown college is taking its act on the road, stopping at 10 cities including Tampa while traveling from Venice to Baraboo, to hold the school's annual eight-week session, which starts Aug. 30. The colorful convoy includes 15 semitrailer trucks filled with such tools of the trade as pies, rubber noses, unicycles, stilts, rubber chickens and clown cars.

Road, Lakeland. Costine and Sermons were last seen together on May 3 at the home of a friend. Authorities have received reports that Sermons is alive and is living somewhere in the western United States, Judd said.

She is either a prime suspect in the Costine murder or a victim, he said. The sheriffs office submitted a letter to the show last December. Detectives felt the show could give the case national attention and hopefully lead to information on Sermons' whereabouts, Judd said. "We desperately need to find her and we sheriff's officials thought the show was probably the best vehicle," Judd said. "It's had significant success in other cases." McLaughlin said he was intrigued with the case and pitched it to the show's producers.
