Renegade Theater performs June 16-18 ByJUDYHALVERSON Life in ancient Rome produced intrigues, deceptions, misrepresentations of identity and downright treachery, as have other ancient and more recent civilizations. Separated from "ancienl Rome" by me distance of fourteen hundred years, however; we feel free to laugh at such human frailty. Stephen Sondheim, one of Broadway's foremost com- posers, has compiled a lighthearted fictional resume ot a day in Rome under these conditions in the musical, "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The which will be presented by the Renegade Theater Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 16, 17, and 18 at 8 p.m. in the junior high auditorium.

Prologus, who introduces the plot, takes for himself the role of Pseudolus because he feels il calls for such tremendous ability no one else could con- ceivably handle it. Our humble friend, Pseudolus, played by Eric Boe, is a slave to Hero (Jack Raaen), Ihe non-too- bright son of an aristocratic couple, Domina (Anne Hustad) and Senex (Mark Johnson). Hero is in love with Philia (Jody Davidson) who is one of the many girls put up for sale by avaricious Lycus (Richard Pemberton) who specializes in this line of merchandise. Hero promises freedom to Pseudolos if a way can be found to have the girl of his choice, who las already been chosen by someone else, unfortunately. Unscrupulous Pseudolos involves innocents such as fellow slave Hysterium (Mark Manning) the National Guard represented by Captain Miles Gloriousus (Dick Raaen) and even senior Citizen Erronius (Eugene di Lorenzo).
