City Agrees To $84,000 Boost In Electric Rate A compromise agreement that will cost the City of Escanaba an estimated $84,000 more per year for its supply of electricity from the Upper Michigan Power Light Co, was approved by the City Council and Power Co. representatives in meeting last night at City Hall. The: agreement ended a rate controversy that began nearly two years ago and included a petition by the Power Co. to the Michigan Public Service Commission for an increase in rates.

At the close of the most recent hearing in the rate dispute it was suggested by John H. McCarthy, PSC chairman, that the city and the power supplier get together in discussions of a new rate sched- ule. Up 2.2 Mills Offers were made and considered by both parties and a compromise was reached at last night's Council session. The city's offer, accepted by representatives of Mead parent concern of the Upper Michigan Power is as follows: The city pay 11 mills per kilowatt hour for electric power beginning June 1, 1956, and that the demand charge be $1 per kilowatt hour per month for all over 6.500 kilowatts. The present rate is 8.8 mills, which means an increase of 2.2 mills and represents an estimated $84,000 in a 12-month period.

The demand charge was increased from the present 80 cents, but this represents only a cost of about $1,000 in 12-month period. Councilman Edward J. Cox moved for adoption of the 11 mill rate following its informal acceptance by Mead Corp. rep- Obituary WILLIAM FRANK HICKEY Funeral services for William Frank Hickey, who has resided in Delta County since 1929, will be held Friday at 10 a. m.

Under the circumstances, they said, a rate lower than the 12.43 mills per KWH suggested in findings of the Public Service Commission would be acceptable.

No Rate Boost The new rate to be paid by the city will continue in effect until the city has its municipal electric generating plant in operation, anticipated on Jan. 1, 1958. City Manager A. V. Aronson said the higher price the city must pay for power will not bring a general rate increase to the city's electric customers.

"Only a small percentage of our 6,946 electric power customers will be affected by the higher power costs," he said. "The customers in the residential, commercial and small power categories who are large users will pay more. The last step in the rate schedule will go up on July 1 from 1.5 cents to 2 cents. There will be no general rate increase." The increase in power cost to the city will be reflected in reduced income from the electric utility to the city general fund.
