Des Moinss Sunday Register Leafs Bow Again at Muskegon, 7-3 BLUEJAYS SLIP OFF TOP, 74-61 DeardenHas 35, Lincoln Rips Nevada By Steve Hellyer Denny Dearden matched Lincoln's one-game scoring record Saturday night, drilling in 35 points to help the Railsplitters shoot down Nevada, 77-54, at Lincoln. Dearden, a scrappy 5-foot 10- guard who sank a points the last half, tied Ace Hen- jdrick's total during the 1964-65 'season. The victory in the regular-season finale padded the Railsplitters' over-all mark to 14-4 the most successful in Sam Long's three seasons as head coaeh. It was Lincoln's fourth consecutive triumph and ninth in its last 10 starts. Nevada, a nine-time loser in 18 games, fell to its third Met ropolitan Conference opponent.

North beat the Heart of Iowa Conference team early in the year and East handled the Cubs a week ago. Dearden, who entered the game as the league's No. 3 scorer with a 17-point mark, connected on 14 of 24 tries from the field and converted all sev- en of his free throw attempts. Greg Cunningham chipped in 11 points for the Railsplitters nine during the vital I second period when Lincoln raced to a 36-23 bulge at half-time after leading by only two with minutes remaining. Dearden hit six straight points and had nine during a string of 11 Lincoln points in succession that forged Ihe game's biggest advantage at 70-46 with 2:11 left.

Dearden, who cashed in 12 of 19 shots Friday night against East, misfired just four times in 13 chances in the second half. Lincoln shot just over 50 per cent for the game on 32 of 63 attempts. Carey Eller paced Nevada with 19 points and Steve Sandvold had 13. Lincoln doesn't play again until it opens district action Mar. 10 against Knoxville at Southeast Polk.

Carl Salyers replaced Al and shot the two free throws, which was just as well in view of Williams' ineffectiveness at the line.

Salyers made both and Drake's winning charge was finally under way. The free throws began a run of eight points, Halliburton following with two baskets and Jones firing in a jump shot. The flurry erected a 10-point lead at 73-63 and Tulsa couldn't get closer than six after that. The Bulldogs, hiking their over-all record to 19-5 with three road games left, made 33 baskets in 82 attempts for 40 per cent. Consequently, Tulsa was never really out of it until the last two minutes. Williams Ailing An attack of flu obviously hindered Drake scoring leader Al Williams, even though his 18 points paced the Bulldogs.

Al might not have missed as many layups all season as he did in this one. He connected on only eight of 23 attempts from the field and was even worse at ihe free throw line with just two out of 10. So it wasn't exactly a mom-orahle farewell performance for the fi-foot fi-inch forward who was one of four seniors playing their last home game. The others were Gary Zeller and reserves Rick Wanama-ker and Dale Teeter. Williams also injured an ankle in the second half and had to leave the floor for a while, but he returned to action briefly later on.

The big thing for Al and his mates, though, was that final score as all five starters hit in double figures. Jeff Halliburton was second to Williams with 17 points, and he also outmusclcd the burly Tulsans to snare 18 rebounds. Bobby scored 15, Gary Zeller 12 and Tom Bush 11. Drake led by only 33-32 at halftimc. then cruised to a 50-40 margin before two technical fouls one on Bush, another on Coach Maury gave the Golden Hurricane a lift.

Bush, whose rugged battling limited fi-10 Tulsa center Dana Lewis to 20 points, was called for a foul on Granville Bunton's hasket that made it 50-42. Tom objected to the call, was quickly socked with a technical and Tulsa added two more points. Bunton making his free throw and Carson another because of the technical. And it was 65-60 for Drake when Carson was fouled by Jones, bringing John off the bench in angry protest.
