Lightning struck Iowa's football team one more Saturday in Frustration City. But no one could convince Coach Bob Commings of it long after Purdue had been declared a 19-18 winner. No one could convince his play-firs, either. "We came here to win," Commings said bitterly, "and we did win." But the scoreboard said oth erwise. Purdue did score a touchdown on the last scrimmage play of the game and did whip the Hawkeyes for the fifteenth straight time.

Jinx Continues So the long Boilermaker jinx continues. But this one was perhaps the most controversial ranking right up there above the 1969 game, which saw an official rule that the knee of an Iowa player hit the ground on Purdue's three-yard line on the final play. Saturday's game was decided when Purdue halfback Scott Dierking dived for a one-yard touchdown with five seconds left. After a bit of hesitation, Head Linesman Art White signaled a touchdown. When White's hands went up, Commings turned into a tornado.

He stormed onto the field and rushed for White at the goal-line. Frustrated He argued, the Iowa players argued. But it was to no avail. Afterward, Commings said, "From where I was standing, the Purdue runner wasn't even close to getting across. "I've never felt this frustrated after any game I've been involved in." The Iowa players felt Dierking was stopped short of the goal, Indeed, most thought Dierking came closer to scoring on the previous play a third-down call from the one.

Wasn't Confident But, in the Purdue locker room, the feelings were just the opposite. The Boilermakers thought Dierking had gotten in although most were not ready to stake their lives to it immediately. "I wasn't confident I was in," said Dierking, a 210-pound junior who led Purdue's rushers with 107 yards in 30 carries and scored all said defensive end Nate Washington. "He wasn't as close on fourth down as he was on third." "He (Dierking) didn't go over me," said freshman Doug Benschoter. "My feet were a foot onto the field.

I hit him and he never pushed me back. "I'll remember this as long as I live." The touchdown climaxed a storybook finish by Purdue, which trailed. 18-7. after Nick Dierkins 1 run (Schmidt kick) I -Schick 6 run (Schick run) I Fetter 19 run (Quartaro kick) I Quartaro 25 FG P-Dierking 1 run (kick failed) Dierking i run (run failed) Attendance 45,549. three of his team's touchdowns.

"I kept praying in the huddle, and it was real close when I went into the Iowa line." The Iowa players on the field and on the sideline jumped for joy when it appeared Dierking hadn't made it.
