(AP) Junior fullback Terry Kunz scored three touchdowns as Colorado beat Oklahoma State, 37-20, in Big Eight action Saturday. The victory over the eighteenth-ranked and Fiesta Bowl-bound Cowboys evened Colorado's record at 5-5 and gave the Buffs a chance at a first division conference finish. The Cowboys fell to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Colorado took a 7-0 lead on its first possession in the opening quarter as Kunz capped an 80-yard drive with a seven-yard run. They key play in the drive was David Williams' 25-yard scamper to the Cowboy 24. The Buffs took advantage of poor Oklahoma State field position to add 13 more points in the second period for a 20-0 halftime lead. The Cowboys got the ball at the 12, eight and 20-yard lines on their first four possessions. Kunz tallied from the six-yard line after a 35-yard march midway in the second period.

Later, Colorado got the ball at the Cowboy 10 when Troy Archer tackled punter Cliff Parsley after a low snap. Three players later Williams scored from the five. The Buff defense, which ranked last in the league before the game, held the Cowboys to five yards rushing in the first half. LAWRENCE. KAN.

(AP) Top-ranked Oklahoma, jolted momentarily by Scott McMichael's 73-yard touchdown run on the game's third play from scrimmage, roared back Saturday on the running and passing of Steve Davis and ripped Kansas. 45-14. The Big Eight Conference triumph extended the Sooners' string of consecutive victories to 18 and their unbeaten streak to 27, both the longest among major colleges. 3 Touchdowns Davis accounted for Oklahoma's first three touchdowns, all in the second quarter. He hit Billy Brooks for a 72-yard touchdown pass, ran one-yard for the go-ahead touchdown and moments later found Tinker Owens with a 14-yard scoring pass.

McMichael, a sophomore quarterback who had rushed for only 15 yards all season, spun right up the middle of the vaunled Sooner defense and sifted through the secondary for his touchdown, the first scored against Oklahoma in the first half this season. Seconds before the half ended, the Jayhawks struck again. McMichael fired a 14-yard touchdown pass to Emmet Edwards. 2 Quick Scores Between those two touchdowns, however, the Sooners got their offense into high gear and scored three times, twice within a span of three minutes. Held scoreless in the third a ter, Oklahoma broke loose again and went on a 17-point spree in less than 54 minutes.

Grant Burget took a pitch-out from Davis and bolted three yards, Tony DiRienzo booted a 33-yard field goal and Tony Peters intercepted a McMichael pass and fled 59 yards for a touchdown. Trailing 3-0 on Scott Morrison's 18-yard field goal midway through the second per-od, Yale retaliated with a 13-play, 75-yard march and took a 6-3 lead on Green's five-yard burst. saying, "They'll rib me about squashing the football and say that Tony knew he had a touchdown and threw me the ball." Oklahoma Thoughts He was thinking about Oklahoma, too. "Our goal after we lost to Missouri was to win the rest of our games and play Oklahoma for the championship. They tried to run up the score on us last year (Oklahoma won, 27) and embarrassed us to a point." Nebraska was pushed back to its own 11 by a David Spare punt early in the fourth quarter and a motion penalty sent them back to the six. The Huskers got only out to the 11 before Randy Lessman took too' much time on a punt attempt and Frazee surged in to block it and grab the ball five yards from the Husker goal. Bailey rammed for three yards and on the next play, Scobey made a dive over right guard for the touchdown.

The second interception of a Humm. pass, this one by Ron Solt and a 19-yard return to the Nebraska 39 gave the Wildcats another chance about Vk minutes later. Bailey connected on a 12-yard throw to Stan Ross for a first down at the 26 but it came up fourth down and three at the Husker 19. In came the Wildcat field goal team. It seemed highly unlikely that David Cheves would attempt a kick.

He didn't and Ardell Johnson recovered a fumble at the 29 when Bailey tried to run and lost the football. Nebraska lost the ball again on O'Leary's fumble on the next play, Gary Spani Kansas State drove to the 19 and on fourth down Cheves did try a field goal, but it was short. Final Score The Cornhuskers covered 80 yards in 13 plays for their final touchdown, Moran streaking around right end from the two. O'Leary, who wound up as the game's top rusher with 97 yards in 20 carries, gained 30 yards in four carries and Westbrook rambled for 23 on one effort to help the drive. two touchdown passes boosted his Big Eight career record to 41.

Humm Cashes In It took Humm only six plays to cash in that wrong guess, Monte Anthony scoring from the five after Humm threw for 10 yards to Don Westbrook and sprinted for eight himself to cover much of the yardage. "I thought he (Bailey) made it," Gibson said afterward. "But I'm not going to dispute the officials. I thought we could make three inches." The move, of course, gave Nebraska a 14-0 cushion going into intermission and de-. fensive adjustments made at halftime shut off the Wildcat attack so well that the visitors never advanced beyond their own 44 in the third quarter and didn't threaten until a blocked punt, a pass interception and a fumble recovery gave them opportunities.

Too Late By the time the Wildcats cashed in on one of those three chances the blocked punt and recovery at the Nebraska five by Dennis Frazee the Huskers owned a comfortable 28-0 lead. Nebraska made it 21-0 with a 72-yard drive that followed the second-half kicknff. Humm completed three passes for 55 yards, the last ering 37 yards to Brad Jenkins for the points. Nebraska tallied again late In the quarter on a 48-yard march. Westbrook swung around right end for 13 yards and Humm connected with Chuck Malito for 10 yards to move it to the two.

Two plays later, Tony Davis cracked the' line, fumbled and tackle Mark Doak covered the ball. It was his first varsity touchdown. His last score came as a freshman against Iowa State on a pass from Humm. Doak joked about it later, By JIM MOACKLER Sunday Register Staff Writer LINCOLN, NEB. Nebraska plays Oklahoma here next Saturday, possibly for a share of the Big Eight Conference football title.

And the Cornhuskers performed Saturday as if their minds were already on that game, in a 35-7 victory over Kansas State. Coach Tom Osborne said so himself afterward, commenting: "I didn't think we played a good football game. It was -a struggle all week long trying to get them up." Humm Blames Self Quarterback David Humm blamed himself for numerous mistakes and said of the Oklahoma game, "Next week has started already. It's something that's been going on all year. Kansas State kind of played like Iowa State.

You could tell they're fired up. You could tell it in their attitude when we made a mistake." The Cornhuskers, rated sixth nationally and Sugar Bowl-bound, built up a 14-0 half-time lead before the usual sellout crowd of 76,188, added two more touchdpwns in the third quarter and then, as has been habit, yielded a fourth-quarter score. Nebraska offset that production of tallying again with only 28 seconds left. The Cornhuskers had trouble' getting started, however, and the Wildcats, dead last in the Big Eight with an 0-6 record (3-7 for the season) made some moves toward making a contest of it. The Wildcats reached the Nebraska 32-yard line midway through the first quarter on the running of quarterback Arthur Bailey, halfback L.

T. Edwards and Roscoe Scobey, before the Corn-husker defense stiffened. Scobey Fumbles In the second period Kansas State went to the Nebraska 17, where Scobey fumbled and linebacker Tom Ruud recovered for Nebraska. Humm started Nebraska toward its fifth league victory against one defeat and its eighth in 10 games this season with a 67-yard drive in the first quarter, throwing a wobbly pass to Don West-brook for an 18-yard scoring strike. John O'Leary helped the drive along by gaining 28 yards in four carries, including a 19-yard and catching a pass from Humm for another nine yards.

That scoring drive shook the Cornhuskers out of their seemingly complacent attitude and sent them toward a day in which they amassed 413 yards, 260 of it rushing and 177 passing. Shortly after that first score, Coach Vince Gibson of Kansas State made a gamble that failed on the last play in the second quarter. It was fourth down and inches on their own 30 and the Wildcats went for it and failed, the GLASS-BELTED GENERAL GRIPPER 780 The winter traction twin to General's famous original equipment tire, the Jumbo 780.
