Dr. Kenneth Shaw, SIU chancellor, was to name Somit to the post today. Somit. 1)0, is executive vice president of the State University of New York at Buffalo and was offered the SIU post in 1974 but turned it down.

Somit has been at Buffalo since 1970. He will replace acting president Hiram Lesar, who was appointed a year ago. Somit would be the 14th president in the school's histnrv. i if true." "As I saw it at the time, the Hunts were making a concerted attempt to manipulate or control the world's supply of silver," Bledsoe said. Bledsoe also disputed the Hunts' repeated statement to various congressional committees they don't know how much silver they own or how much they are worth.

"THE BROTHERS are very brilliant individuals," he said. "They have phenomenal memories they know precisely the amount of silver they have at any given moment. "Silver is looked at as the first order of business in the morning and it is discussed by the two gentlemen," he said. "They have other interests, yes, but silver is first and prime in their minds." The Hunts are suing Bledsoe for conflict of interest, diverting monies to his own use, pirating employees and breach of a fiduciary relationship. He has filed a countersuit charging the Hunts with trying to discredit him in the oil and gas industry.

decisions of Nelson Bunker and William Herbert Hunt of Dallas, detailed some of their silver transactions to the House Government Operations subcommittee investigating the Hunts' role in the March silver market collapse. THE HUNTS' silver hoarding has been blamed by some for the unprecedented rise in silver prices to $50 an ounce in Janaury. The price plunged to $11 in Ma-ch, causing a Wall Street panic. Rep. Benjamin Rosenthal, chairman of the subcommittee, asked the Justice Department to investigate the Hunts for possible perjury in their congressional statements and violations of federal securities, commodities and tax laws alleged by Bledsoe.

In a 51-page deposition, Bledsoe, who is being sued by the Hunts for various other business dealings, flatly contradicted the Hunts' claims that they purchased silver individually and at no time tried to corner the silver market. IN 1975, Bledsoe said, the Hunts tried to convince the family of the shah of Iran and other wealthy individuals in the Middle East to buy silver. The idea was to increase demand, and consequently, the price of silver. At the time, the two brothers owned about 50 million ounces of he said. Bledsoe said in 1978 Connally introduced the brothers to a wealthy Saudi Arabian for the purpose of encouraging certain Saudis to purchase silver.

"Governor Connally had other ties involving activities in Texas, Georgia and so it was just a matter of getting the Hunts in the front door with these very wealthy Arab sheiks," Bledsoe said. He said such introductions were the basis of a corporation the Hunts later formed with influential Saudis for the purpose of buying silver. ROGER GOLDBERG, a Hunt attorney, released a statement by the two brothers saying they had not seen Bledsoe's statment, but "based on what they have heard, it appears that substantial portions of that statement are blantantly un ALBERT SOMIT Sears regrets to inform their customers that the quartz watches, quartz travel alarm and the 6-pc. 35mm camera outfit advertised on page 3 of the Sears Leadership Sale" preprint which was distributed in today's issue of this newspaper are not available for sale in the Sears Moline store. WASHINGTON (UPI) The billionaire Hunt brothers tried to convince the family of the shah of Iran and other wealthy Middle East individuals to purchase large amounts of silver in an attempt to control the world silver market, a former Hunt aide says. William Bledsoe said in sworn testimony to Congress Tuesday the Hunts also enlisted the help of former Texas Gov. John Connally to introduce them to wealthy "Arab sheiks." DES director William Jamieson Jr. said the agency would not go along with the request, a Phoenix newspaper reported.

The Klan's request was listed in the DES monthly job report, the Sun City Daily News-Sun said. A job-services employee told the newspaper the listing was in the job bank, saying the job paid between $3.90 and $4.25 an hour. An assistant attorney general said the listing is not illegal so long as the employer complied with equal opportunity regulations. "It would seem to me that servicing the job order with the Ku Klux Klan would be against the law. We are not allowed to do business with agencies whose charters are discriminatory," Jamieson said.

3800 23rd Avenue MOLINE, ILL. Our City Line Staff says, I PERCY A. WOOD Package bomb blast injures top executive of United Air Lines LAKE FOREST (AP) Police say they have no leads on the origin of a package bomb that exploded in the home of United Airlines President Percy A. Wood Tuesday night, leaving him with "extensive" cuts andlacera-tions. Wood, 60, was reported in good condition today following surgery in Lake Forest Hospital.

He suffered injuries to his face, left hand and left leg, a hospital spokesman said. Police said a guard had been posted at the airline executive's hospital room. FBI agents at the Wood home said the U.S. Postal Service has primary jurisdiction in the case because the bomb apparently was delivered by mail. Agents said the FBI, along with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms division of the Treasury Department and Lake Forest police, will continue investigating the bombing.

CHICAGO FBI spokesman George Mandich said the explosive was contained in "not too big a package" delivered to Wood's home in the wealthy lakeshore suburb north of Chicago. He said he knew of no history of threats to Wood or the company. Thus far, no persons or organizations have claimed responsibility in the bombing, Mandich said. Wood underwent surgery late Tuesday to remove fragments of the bomb from his face and hands. Lake Forest Hospital spokesman Joyce Fitzgerald said Wood had suffered "extensive" cuts and lacerations to the left side of his face, his left hand, and left leg.

Doctors said Wood suffered "no permanent damage," Ms. Fitzgerald said, but added that he may require plastic surgery. According to police and the FBI, the incident occurred at Wood's home at approximately 3 48 p.m. Police Chief Bernard Prais said Wood was alone in the house at the time of the explosion. Prais said the airline executive told him the bomb was contained in a paper-wrapped package he took from the home's roadside mail box.

PRAIS DESCRIBED the bomb as being disguised as a book, approximately 2 inches by 5 inches by 7 inches. The package, which apparently contained a pipe bomb, exploded as Wood was opening it in the kitchen, Prais said. He said that following the explosion. Wood walked to the house of neighbors who summoned the ambulance and police.
