THE SUNDAY DISPATCH, Moline, Illinois Sept. 28, 1980 17 Illinois colleges Crenshaw ups lead to 5 shots Saftey-first football does in Augustana NAPA, Calif. (UPI) Ben Crenshaw, shooting for his first victory in almost two years, capped a 4-under-par 68 Saturday with a birdie on the final hole for a five-stroke lead over Jack Ren-ner after three rounds of a $300,000 PGA tournament. Playing his last event this year on the PGA tour, the 28-year-old Crenshaw has put together three of his finest rounds of 1980 a year in which he has finished second three times following a 1979 campaign in which he won the rain-abbreviated Phoenix Open in January Huskies come from behind ATHENS, Ohio (UPI) Northern Illinois' Rick Bridges ran for one fourth-quarter touchdown and threw for another in leading the Huskies to a 22-21 come-from-behind, Mid-American Conference triumph over Ohio University Saturday. With four minutes left, Bridges plunged one yard to paydirt for the final points of the game.

Earlier in the last period, he found split end Mike Pinckney on an 11-yard scoring toss to cap an 80-yard, 12-play drive. Northern had opened up a 10-0 first-half lead on fullback Greg Jefferson's two-yard run and a 30-yard field goal by Rome Moga The Bobcats then picked up their first TD on a five-yard run by Sam Shon in the second frame and went ahead in the third on Todd Yoho's 18-yard scoring Tony Carifa's 1-yard TD plunge gave OU a 21-10 third-quarter lead. NIU now owns a 2-2 record for all games and a 1-2 MAC mark. Ohio is 1-2 and 1-1. Eastern opportunistic CHARLESTON (UPI) Scott McGhee caught two touchdown passes and Eastern Illinois turned five Northeast Missouri State turnovers into touchdowns Saturday to boost the Panthers to a 41-7 victory over the Bulldogs.

Eastern set up touchdowns with three pass intercep- trouble again. Bob Williams broke into the secondary with a quick pop and was 63 yards downfield before Pete Vernon caught him from behind. That TD-saving tackle was nullified when Britt Travis got the only touchdown of the day on the next play. THE VIKINGS then began their only sustained drive of the day, moving to the Wesleyan 13. But just as Al Kalemba appeared to be in the end zone to narrow the deficit, he dropped the football on the 1-yard-line and Wesleyan recovered.

Augie never got closer, although Mike Pendergast did hold on to the football all the way only to have his 57-yard punt return nullified by a clipping call near midfield. And an interception of a Mark Snick pass at the 8 stopped the only other Viking penetration late in the second quarter. Wesleyan added Dave Pearce field goals in the second and fourth quarters to account for the finale. Augie, now 1-1, hosts Carthage in its third straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin football game BLOOMINGTON Playing safety-first football, Illinois Wesleyan University was careful not to let visiting Augustana too near the end zone Saturday, and beat the Vikings 15-0 in what had to be football's version of basketball's four-corner offense. The Titans, now 2-0, really didn't let the air out of the football; they deflated Augustana's offense instead.

Already behind 12-0 at the half, the Vikings managed only four yards rushing in the final two periods, and never got closer than their own 20-yard line (80 yards from the goal) in the fourth period. For the game, they had only 91 yards in total offense. AND IT WAS their lack of movement that gave Wesleyan the only points it needed early in the contest. After failing to move the ball from its own 32-yard line in its initial possession, Augie lined up to punt. But the snap sailed well over the head of kicker Todd Miller, who did all he could to fall on the ball in the end zone.

But when the entire Titan defense fell on Miller, it was worth a two-point safety. The Vikings did get off a good punt later in the same period, but immediately found MIKE PENDERGAST touchdown didn't count Hogs in squeaker and then finished second five times. Coupled with his first two rounds of 66-67, Crenshaw's 68 gave him a 54-hole total of 15-under 201. Renner shot a 67 in the third round but he came from far back and was at 206, one stroke ahead of J. C.

Snead, who also had a 67. While Renner was extremely pleased with his 67, which included birdies on the final three holes, Snead seemed upset he didn't shoot better, although his card was impressive with five birdies and no bogeys. "I would have been happy with a 3 or 4-under," said Renner, who is 57th on the money list and needs a high finish to lock up exempt status for a third straight year. "Getting those birdies at the end of a tiring day was a bonus. Still, I don't think I have a realistic chance to catch Crenshaw.

He's a great player and you don't spot a great player five shots and beat him." Johnny Miller shot an even-par 72 and was all alone at 209, eight shots off the lead and one stroke ahead of Bobby Wadkins, Lon Hinkle, Dave Eichelberger, Gary Hallberg, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Watson, who also is playing for the last time this year. Watson, who has the money winning title locked up for a fourth straight year, finished with a 72. The game had been tied since the final play of the first half until Ordonez' field goal. Richard Richardson recovered the critical fumble by Tulsa's Kenneth Session which led to the winning points. Arkansas improved its record to 2-1 and Tulsa dropped to 1-2.

Tulsa had an excellent chance of pulling off the upset, but the Hurricane's chances began to slip away in the third quarter when the Razorbacks defense held on fourth-and-1 at their own 2. Tulsa scored 10 points in the second quarter during a steady drizzle to tie the halftime score at 10-10. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UPI) Ish Ordonez drilled a 41-yard field goal with a little more than seven minutes remaining Saturday to give the 16th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks a 13-10 triumph over surprisingly stubborn Tulsa. Arkansas recovered five Tulsa fumbles, including one at the Hurricane 40 midway through the final period that set up the winning score.

After Ordonez put the Razorbacks ahead, Tulsa took the kickoff and marched from its own 20 to the Arkansas 29 before Stu Crum missed a tying field goal attempt from 46 yards out with 2:45 remaining. Bryant cops 299th win The win gave Alabama Coach Bear Bryant his 299th career coaching victory and extended the nation's longest major college winning streak to 24 games. Interception sa ves SIU DES MOINES, Iowa (UPI) Southern Illinois set up touchdowns on two Drake fumbles in the first period and held off a fourth-quarter rally to beat the Bulldogs 34-28 in a Missouri Valley Conference game Saturday. Tailback Walter Poole darted for three touchdowns for SIU and Saluki quarterback Gerald Carr rushed for two more. Tailback Talmadge Tanks scored two TDs in the Bulldog rally but Drake's hopes were thwarted when SIU cornerback Ty Payne intercepted a Drake pass in the Saluki end zone with 27 seconds left in the game. Payne's interception ended a nightmare for SIU coach Rey Dempsey, whose team lost last weekend on a last-minute score. ISU falters a gun NORMAL.

Moments before, Vanderbilt, 0-3, had a fourth and goal situation at the Alabama 2, its deepest threat, but quarterback Van Heflin fumbled the ball and Alabama linebacker Thomas Boyd recovered in mid-air and raced 52 yards before he was tackled. Orcutt's other score came at 6 27 in the third quarter on a 3-yard run capping a seven-play, 80-yard drive that included a 46-yard run by running back Joe Jones and a 21-yard sprint by running back Major Ogilvie. The Crimson Tide, 3-0, scored their first touchdown when Jones took the ball in from 1-yard out early in the first quarter to cap an 11-play, 80-yard drive.

Five thefts key Tigers SAN DIEGO (UPI) Missouri cornerback Bill Whitaker intercepted three passes and running back James Wilder rushed for 94 yards Saturday to power the 12th-ranked Tigers to a 31-7 victory over San Diego State in a nonconference game. Missouri's defense picked off a total of five passes and limited the Aztecs to just three yards on the ground. Whitaker's interceptions gave him six against San Diego State in two meetings. Wilder, a 6-foot-2, 221-pound senior, just missed his second consecutive 100-yard rushing day, carrying the ball 20 times and scoring twice. DELUXE CHAMPION" Polyester cord LOUISVILLE, Ky.

(UPI) "I feel like I've been touched by God," All-America Darrell Griffith said Saturday after the No. 2 pick in the NBA collegiate draft signed a multi-year contract with the Utah Jazz for a reported $1.5 million. The 6-feet-4 Louisville star said he was thankful to make it into the NBA. "This is more like a dream come' true," said Griffith, who signed the contract in time to join the Jazz for Saturday night's exhibition game against the Indiana Pacers at Freedom Hall in Louisville, his hometown. Griffith, who led Louisville to the NCAA national championship last year, said he would immediately begin -orienting himself to the Jazz style of play.

"I'm going to have to fit my way in as soon as possible," said Griffith, who was the highest draft pick still without a contract until he came to terms with the Jazz. Individuals in contact with Woolf and the Jazz negotiators indicated Griffith's contract would provide him with a salary of about $300,000 a year. Griffith nicknamed "Dr. Dunkenstein" because of ability to dunk the ball behind his back and while leaping full circle at the basket was a consensus All-America who scored a school-record 2,333 points during his four-year career at Louisville. He averaged 18.5 points per game for a floor shooting percentage of 52.3 percent.

Griffith's speed, fast hands and 48-inch vertical leaping ability also make him a valuable defensive player. Frank Layden, the general manager of the Jazz, said he was confident Griffith would help improve the team's average home attendance of 7,800 not as much because of his own crowd-pleasing style of play but because he will "help the Jazz win."
