Do this and you will gain a fair idea of the dog how. It is only fair to the officials of the Kennel club to begin this plain story of the opening day of the big dog show with the simple statement that a better lot of purely bred canines were never benched in this or any other' American city. Half an hour after the doors of the armory opened yesterday morning, and long before the Judging begao, old dog fanciers from the East voiced their congratulations to the officers of the local club. One critic who bails from Boston and is an acknowledged authority on setters and terriers expressed tbe views of the wise men from the East when he aaidr "This Is a grand lot of dogs. I den't care to be quoted on tbe subject, for I am personally intecested In one or two of the entries. but I will say this much, the Weatmioater club's show did not equal this one from the standpoint of genera excellence.

There were more dogs shown in Madison Square garden, but what your sbow lacks in numbers it more than makes up in quality. These doga, especially the Western contingent, are brighter and more carefully groomed. In a word, they are a rare lot, and reflect great credit on Western breeders." The learned Bostonian might have rounded out his complimentary comment by saying a word or two about the manners of the dog. Apparently all the canine stars were in the very best of spirits and more than ready to make friends with the curious crowd. "These 'uns be all actin' polite an' a baby kin make up to 'em," remarked an old and grizzled man who charge of an eastern kennel of Great Danes.

Great Vanes accepted the lavish palaver and constant fondling from demonstrative admirers without a murmur; pink-nosed, stub-tailed dogs allowed curious connoisseurs to examine them at close quarter with a dignity all their own. Even the Irish terriers and -the surly wolfhounds were affable and gentle As a matter of course the collies, the pointers, and the setters were always ready to accept the advances of strange admirers, while the big mastiffs and St. Bernards could not have behaved better.

'Another notable feature of the show was the all but faultless condition of the doge. For example, the crack St. Bernards from tbe kennel of young Frank Gould wer; groomed to the very moment. Their master, tbe millionaire, appreciate the truth of the old saying that "bad grooming make street' dogs of champions." for the furnishings' of his kennel are of a most elaborate character. These Gould dogs traveled to Chicago in a private car.

On their arrival they were led to a etable In' tbe neighborhood of tbe armory. Mr. Gould's sgents had rented the two upper floors of the building. One entire floor was carpeted with tanbark. and transformed Into a perfect exercising ring.

There the dogs received their final sprucing up for tbe showr-and aa a result whenhe dogs entered the armory they were in beautiful form. Naturally they attracted more than passing attention, and their beneh was constantly surrounded by a shifting throng admirers. Mr. GssK's Mr. Gould evidently intends to make his kenneL of St.

Bernards famous In the dog world, and Judging from the lot shown yesterday, will come pretty close to realising his ambition. All his dogs are champions by right of breeding, and there Is an "individuality" In their make up which is characteristic of dogs of the very highest class. Chantrel Prince is a grandly built, perfectly pointed, rough-coated St. Bernard. Hornsea Countess Is a fit kennel mate for the Prince, and that Is paying her the greatest of compliments.

Helen M. Is a puppy of rare promise, while Chantrel Kitty. i deserving of more than passing praise. The kennel attendants are proud of Marvelcroft, and have good reason to be. Mr.

Gould shows only one smooth-coated St. Bernard. Active Is her name. But the millionaire's string does not monopolize all tbe honors in thaSt. Bernard class.

Meirenheimer has a fine kennel of both rough and amofith coated dors Thomas. J. Ehenbrook make a fine showing. There Is a splendid showing of great Danes beaded that grand champion. Sandor von 2no.

Things are different now. Yesterday both the matrons and the maids crowded each other for the privilege of petting and gushing ever the favorites of "bull row." For Instance; Cmaplon Emperor, the ugliest and the best English bulldog In the lot. all but ruined the tailor-made gown of a young and pretty woman, who insisted on hugging the -dog. Empress appeared to enjoy the pettlasj and in her eagerness to express her sentiment spilt pan of water over the front of the woman's gown. Bat the fafr victim of tho accident never davered in her enthusiasm.

"You dear, beautiful old darling." she cried, "we don't care for the gown, do we?" And Empress whimpered her delight. Aa matter of fact, there Is a grand showing In the full class, not only in the number, but In the quality of the dogs benched. The showing of Boston terriers is very good. It would require an even column of apace to fairly describe the merits of the Colliers at this show. They are a rare lot of good ones.

The showing of poodles and Irish terriers is a fairly good one, and several good fox terriers are on the benches. Of course, there are the usual exhibits of toy doga of all aorta and description. The story of any dog show la never complete without a puaragraph or about the crowd. That of yesterday proved no exception to the rule. It was a crowd made up of all sorts and conditions of men and women.

Society women In perfect gowns touched elbows with men of fashion and men who thought of nothing and talked of nothing but Society Well Represented. Women deserted study classes and literary clubs to attend the opening of the dog show and the First Regiment armory was made bright by their varied costumes. The balcony boxes were occupied by parties that took interest in the awarding of prizes, for among the entries are a number of dogs belonging to the social leaders of Chicago. W. KETES ROCGH FOX TERRIER. ENDCLIFF BILLY. The armory la admirably arranged for tbe bench show, and the Mascoutah Kennel club has been most successful In adapting the pace to its uses. The Interior is quite transformed and presents a most inviting appearance to visitors.

The benches, with their aristocratic occupants, are distributed' most conveniently. Pretty girls In handsome street" costumes jesterday surrounded tbe show rings to waich Judging of dogs of high degree. Among tnem were owners, anxious to have their pets decorated with the much-voveted blue rlb-bou. Here and there girls were to be seen leading handsome dogs to the benches allotted competitors for prizes. While the after-toon attendance was large, ihe evening proved that the armory was hardly large enough to hold -the dog lovers of Chicago, and women thronged the wide promenade, the balcony, the spaces In front of the benches.

The work of distinguishing the superior competitive points in the different classes commenced a little later than the announced time, owing to delayed arrival in the city of some the Eartern Judges, but everything moved along rapidly as soon as tbe Judges and stewards entered the ling. There were four exhibition 'rings, surrounded at all times during Judging by deeply Interested crowds of spectators, owners, and agents, where tbe animals were displayed to the best advantage by handlers and employes of the Mascoutah Kennel dubs Each Judge was accompanied by a steward, who kept an official record of tbe pro ceedings, and in many instances the disposl- 1 tloj of tbe prises and ribbons proved a delicate task. IL McDonald Yesterday appeared before Judgo Wbeatley In the County court to ask-that her husband, a physician, be compelled to support their three' children Roy, May. and MabeL According to the evidence beard yesterday the domestic life of the McDonalds has been unhappy since the doctor Drst became tbe adviser of the Servite Sisters. Three months ago McDonald lefr his home and went to live in one of the flats owned by tbe order. For a time he contributed $15 a week to tbe support of his family, but since the last of January he has not given them a cent, it Is ssid. The children were sent to him to ask that they be clothed and fed, and the evidence ahowed that he had told them to "freeze and starve to death" for all he cared.

The father of Mrs. McDonald tdok the stand and testified the children were huogry and without clothes and that he had contributed to their support until he was unable to do so further. As he closed his testimony he arose to bis feet. and. pointing at the defendant, denounced him as heartless and cruel and a sbame to the medics profession.

Tbe defendant testified that he received office room and $13 a week from tbe Servite Sisters for managing their property.
