CIO THE SUNDAY DISPATCH AND ARGUS December 30, 1990 SportsWeekend Dwight Smith wants out or maybe not Moline 3rd, UT 4th at Peoria Relays PEORIA The Moline and United Township boys swimming teams finished third and fourth, respectively, here Saturday in the By Alan Solomon Chicago Tribune He doesn't want to go anywhere and yet, he does. These are difficult times for Dwight Smith. 'For personal reasons, I don't want to leave Chicago. For career reasons, I probably need to. i Dwight Smith feona Central Relays.

The lone first-place relay finish was by the UT duo of Tom Koester and Bill Sei-dlitz. They took the 2x200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.16. "UT had steady swims in every event," said Frank Boothe, who not only was coaching his own Moline team but also the Panther Tom Koester Bill Seidlltz i "Careers are careers." Smith has no complaint about the Bell signing. "That's a good acquisition," he said. "George Bell's a great ballplayer, a proven power hitter." And if a trade doesn't come, he said, he won't mope through the year.

"If I'm there, there won't be any bad attitude from me," said Smith. "If I'm there, I'll play my tail off and play my role. You'll see the same Dwight Smith you normally see the gregarious kid keeping everybody up in the clubhouse, having, fun, never a dull moment." But facts are facts. Careers are careers. "It's kind of hard to bite that you need to go on for career reasons but you love this ballclub," Smith said.

"You're kind of stuck in between. "But you can't get better as a ballplayer on the bench. I think I'm good enough to play in the major leagues if not every day, at least against right-handers, the situation I had in Chicago in '89." He hit .324 that year. He hit .262 in 1990. "For personal reasons," Smith said, "I don't want to leave Chicago.

For career reasons, I probably need to. I would hope, if the opportunity came up, they would give it to me." And if it doesn't happen? "The bottom line is, Dwight loves to win," he said. "And if he's on that ballclub and we get a World Series team, substituting for UT coach Dave Busch who could not attend the meet. "They should be very pleased with their overall performance." Shawn Schatteman and Chris Edmondson had a strong showing in the 2x500 freestyle event, taking second. Moline's best finish was second, although it took second in five of the events.

Mark Moskowitz and Matt Dobereiner both were on "The people on the ballclub it's so good a relationship," Smith said from his South Carolina home. "They're almost brothers to me. I had an opportunity to go through the system and be in the big leagues with them, win a title with them you've got a special love for them. "It's so hard just to leave them But the signing of George Bell means Dwight Smith, 27, brimming with, promise two years ago as the National League's No. 2 rookie, has no chance to be a starting outfielder or even a platoon outfielder for the Chicago Cubs in 1991.

None. Playing time, barring an injury, will be scarce. Now, this isn't a Mitch Williams situation. Williams, already a millionaire, wants out because he faces the awful, awful prospect of pitching in the eighth inning instead of the ninth. Smith just wants to play.

He made $165,000 last season and, after a disappointing sophomore year, probably will get a token raise next year. As a fourth outfielder, he can hope only to get another token raise in 1992. "Facts are facts," Smith said. Kittle likes Cory Snyder best', Ron Kittle, who played with Cory Snyder in Cleveland and with Sammy Sosa in Chicago: "Cory, he's going to be a fourth outfielder be-; cause they're in love with Sammy Sosa. But Cory's going to do better than Sammy Sosa -over a whole; year." Old Comiskey down in March Barring something strange, old Comiskey Park should start tum-1 bling down sometime around March; 1.

The delay until near-spring is the! contractor's idea, to ease the) chances of having an expensive' crew idling in case of sudden bad, weather. Leyland won 't miss Darryl The Pirates' Jim Leyland on how much the Mets will miss Darryl; Strawberry: "They'll miss him more-than I will." Mark Moskowitz Matt Doberelner ring, I'll be the happiest kid in the world." Cardinal-Angel talks? The St. Louis Cardinals are dying to unload their big-money guys. Latest buzz has them talking to the California Angels about a deal that could send Guerrero and reliever Lee Smith to Anaheim for first baseman Wally Joyner and one of the Angels' many starting pitchers. He's soooo You know the newest member of the White Sox, 43-year-old Charlie Hough, is old when his manager (Jeff Torborg) caught him in his first game in the big leagues 21 seasons ago.

Hough also served up the home run that gave his new catcher, Carlton Fisk, the record for most career homers by a catcher. Countdown is on Look out. Only 54 days until pitchers and catchers report to scenic Clearwater, Fla. three of the second-place teams. Moskowitz teamed up with Dobereiner, Chad Christensen and Perron Cox in the JV 200-meter relay.

He also teamed up with Chris Coopman in the 2x100 freestyle. His other finish was with Christensen, Dobereiner and Neil Kronfeov in the JV 200 freestyle relay. Dobereiner's other second-place finish was with teammate John Leinart in the 2x50 freestyle. Three years after he left baseball to start a second career as an auto dealer, Reggie Jackson is heading for the showers with a little help from the state of California.

The former Oakland A's slugger is negotiating to sell his sole remaining dealership, Reggie Jackson Volkswagen-Nissan in Palo Alto, which was forced to close last week when the Department of Motor Vehicles revoked its sales license. reached for comment- The demise of Jackson's auto businesses will not leave him with-; out an income. He continues to host several television shows and provide analysis for California Angels; broadcasts, as well as hold an exec-utive post with a baseball card com- pany. And he recently appeared on an episode of "MacGyver," cast as a former ballplayer turned television actor and automobile dealer. "As far as we're concerned, they are out of business," said Roddy Rodriguez, the DMV's supervising in-' vestigator in San Jose.

If the dealership is sold, it would dissolve the last bastion of what Jackson once envisioned as an automobile sales empire. His flagship franchise, Reggie Jackson Chevrolet in Berkeley, abruptly closed its doors in mid-1989, less than a year after Jackson took it over. And his Ford outlet in the Sierra town of Quincy shut down in August, unable to make a profit. The DMV acted when it discovered the Secretary of State had suspended the dealership's corporate status in September, after Jackson and his partners failed to provide an annual list of officers. In addition, the Palo Alto operation is facing a bill from the state Board of Equalization for what one Jackson associate described as "a lot of money" in back sales taxes.

Calls to the dealership were not returned, and Jackson could not be Rains leads downpour on local league marks Whitmore Scott Rains enjoyed the best series of his brief but meteoric career as he led his team in the Tri-City Classic league to a pair of all-time league scoring records. Firing games of 258, 279 and 277, the 17-year-old Rains notched an 814 series, that paced the Highland Park BowlWells Fargo team to a 3616 series and 1294 game. Both scores are the best ever rolled in the league, now in its 91st season. It takes more than one big score to reach the heights that Highland Park BowlWells Fargo attained. Shannon Callahan, the only lefty on the team, used games of 233, 257 and 254 for a 774 while Dan Miner, the secretary of the Moline-East Moline B.A., had a 724 that was highlighted by a 300 game.

June 9, 1991. This marks the second extension of the tournament, which was originally scheduled to close on May 26. As of Dec. 5, the WIBC has processed entries for 8,300 teams. The closing date for entries is Jan.

11, unless the schedule is filled prior to that date. There will probably never be a WIBC Tournament closer than the Cedar Rapids meet. Local women are urged to get their entries turned in so they can be a part of this gala event. Cedar Rapids Bowling Center and Westdale Bowling Center will be the sites of the 67 day tournament that will open April 4. Some solid shooting The John Deere Dears league at Highland Park Bowl saw a couple of really fine scores bowled in recent weeks.

Vera Branch dosed a series with a 257 game that brought her to 619 for the day. A week later, Cammie Jett had games of 192, 232 and 211 for a big 635 in' the league that bowls at 5 p.m. Kathy Evins salvaged what looked to be a below-average series by exploding for a 255 third game. This gave Evins a 555 series in the Zal Caldron league at Highland Park Bowl. 190 average right-hander showed that she is apt to be a reckoning force in future statewide competition.

WIBC membership falls The annual report of the WIBC for the 1989-90 season was recently received, and, not unexpectedly, it-showed still further erosion of WIBC's membership totals. For the first time since the 1969-70 season, WIBC's membership dropped below the three-million mark. In between, the high point of more than 4.2 million had been reached during the 1978-79 campaign. Last season's loss in numbers represented a 5.5 percent drop across all of the WIBC. Similar losses were felt by both of the WIBC local associations in the Quad Cities.

The Moline-Rock Island Women's B.A., with a loss of 218 members from '88-89 to '89-90, and the Daven-port-Bettendorf Women's B.A., whose drop was 265, both showed a 5.6 percent decline. It is expected that membership for the ABC has also showed a similar percentage loss, but ABC's annual report has not yet arrived. WIBC set for Cedar Rapids The 72nd annual WIBC Tournament, to be held in Cedar Rapids, has been extended seven days to Miner gem was surrounded by scores of 200 and 224. Team 'captain Wally Ladewig contributed scores of 227, 242 and 199 for a 668 Classic average to a league-high 220, had bowled an 801 series back in September while competing in a Central Illinois Classic Bowling Association tournament at Highland Park Bowl. The United Township senior also leads the' Highland Masters and Davenport City leagues with averages of 229 and 214.

Steensen sets mark Vickie Steensen is a beautiful 21-year-old Clinton, Iowa, resident who rolled her name into Iowa bowling history when she recently bowled the highest three game series ever recorded by a member of the Iowa Women's Bowling Association. Steensen used the qualifying rounds of the Iowa Open tournament at Lancer Lanes, Cedar Rapids, to post games of 300, 265 and 256 for an 821 series that eclipsed the previous Iowa record for women by three pins. Just five weeks earlier, Steensen had bowled a 300 game during tournament action at Recreation Lanes in her home city of Clinton, Bev Ortner, then of Galva, Iowa, was the first WIBC member to ever top 800 in sanctioned competition when she rolled an 818 series during the 1968-69 season. The record stood unscathed for 22 years until the Clinton star took to the lanes. Although Steensen had to settle for fifth-place in the Iowa Open, the East Wrestling Invitational here Saturday.

Tim Kanke of Geneseo finished fourth for the Maple Leafs at 140 pounds in the tournament called the Al Dvorak Memorial Tournament. The Leafs finished 18th overall. "This was a very tough tournament, and to have two kids in final matches with this many teams really says something for them," said Moline coach Todd Rosenthal. Sonny Dodd helped out the Maroons by getting a major decision over David Johnson of Rockford Auburn, 13-4. Other Moline finishers were Eric Collins, fifth at 112, and Denny Royce, sixth at 152.

Troy Bjork was the only other top six finisher for Geneseo. Bjork took fifth at 119 by recording a decision over El Jaeger of Glenbard East. Team effort gets Rocks 3rd at Palatine PALATINE Rock Island proved it had a tough team and not just tough individuals Saturday as the Rocks grabbed third place at the Palatine Wrestling Tournament. Rock Island had seven grapplers finish between first and fifth and two in consolation to score 121 Vi points, finishing behind Lincolnway in the top spot and runner-up Gordon Tech. Rocks Kevin Haynes, Terry Morrow, George Henderson and La-verne Clarke took third-place finishes while teammates Bobby Wo-eckener and Mike Wallarab came in fourth.

Matt Freeman gave the Rocks fifth-place points and Kylee Colvin and Dimeana Johnson finished in the consolation spots. Rock Island will face United Township Thursday for a Western Big 6 conference dual. "We've have a 12-0 dual-meet record and this finish here will motivate the guys," said Rocks' coach Dave Smith. "This was really a team effort and it showed that our whole team is tough, not just certain wrestlers." One streak came to an end, however. Clarke, the Rocks' 152-pounder, lost his 15-0, 15-pin record when he was pinned by an Oak Forest opponent.

"He was pinned by a guy who then got pinned in the championship," said Smith. "He'll learn from this, too, and will have an advantage when he gets to state." Alleman girls take Dixon consolation title DLXON Tired as they may be, Alleman's girls basketball team, proved to have plenty left in reserve to win the consolation bracket title at the Dixon Holiday Tournament, beating Rock Falls 53-35 Saturday. On Friday, the Pioneers had played back-to-back games, and three games over a 24-hour period. Alleman finishes the 1990 portion of their schedule with a 10-6 record. "We played Rock Falls on Dec.

19, so we were familiar with them," said Pioneer assistant coach Jay Hatch. "We beat them a lot worse last time, but I think we did really well considering our recent schedule." Mary DeSmet kept up her high scoring in the tournament, adding a game-high 19. Andrea Johnson chipped in with 11 points. Alleman took a commanding lead into the final period, up 45-29. Alleman resumes action on Jan.

Aledo grabs third at Knoxville tourney KNOXVILLE The Aledo boys' basketball team played before a crowd Saturday, and rolled over Union 64-40 to take third in the Knoxville Christmas Tournament. Bryan Hofmann led the Green Dragon attack, getting 23 points, including five 3-pointers. John Hofmann also had a good night, hitting for 20. The game was close going into halftime, with Aledo up by a slim margin, 24-23.

The Dragons came out roaring in the third, allowing just five points and scoring 23, to lead 47-28 after the third. The reason for the big crowd was the home team Knoxville playing in the title game, and the Blue Bullets didn't disappoint, beating Avon 57-53.
