Dr. A. J. Emeis.

a well known physician of that place, was called upon la the morning by a man named Eurppe, to visit bis wife, which be did in company with the man. The doctor found the woman in bed but apparently not very sick, but at her request and that of her husband, agreed to call again in the after noon and both the man anl womau were particular to know at what hour be would call, and the doctor said between three and four o'clock. At that time he again called and was shown into the room by the bus band and he approached the bed and took hold of the woman's wrist to feel her pulse. While tne doctor was thus engaged the husband rushed in with a revolver in his hand and charged the doctor with abusing his wife. The woman's brother followed und took the revolver away from Lueppe and both men demanded that Dr.

Emeis should set tle the uff ilr before it got into the papers. The doctor feeling that be was the viciim of a plot refused todo anything of the kiud. He cau ed the arrest of Lueppe who was tried yesterday before Justice Kramer. After the trial was ended Jus- tiee Kramer fined Lueppe $30 with costs ($9) lor assault. lie iid he was not elected as big enough blockhead to believe that a man of Dr.

Emeis' years, experience as a physician, and standing as a citizen, would be guilty of wrong conduct with a patient when ber husband and brother were withinifour feet ol him, and liable, if they had feelings for the sick wile, to open the door at any second and inquire as to the doctor's opinion. The defendant's attorney gave notice of appeal the district court. Dr. Emeis has determined to prosecute Lueppe and his wife, and her brother, for conspiracy to blackmail. People have come to him and told him so much as to the character of the defendants, that he believes it due to himself and to the community that they be exposed and punish ed.

He says Lueppe and his wife have been married about a month. Railway Election. The stockholders of the Burlingfon, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway Company met at Cedar Rapids on Tuesday Four of the old directors were re-elected as follows: II Griggs, of Davenport, Bailey, of Clinton, and Squires and Lyman Cook of Burlington- R. R. Cable, of Rock Island, was elected to succeed John I Blair.

Tho Board then organized by the election of the Hon. J. Tracy to succeed himself as president and the re election of the other officers. Mr. Dewey, of Des Moines, retired lrom the executive committee, and was succeeded by Mr Cable.

The representation of stock was greater than ever before. There beine: about forty-five thousand ehares of stock represented, which is about ten thousand more than was ever befoie represented at an annual e'eotion. Chatauqua- The students of the Chataugua Literary and Scientific Circle observe fifteen "memorial days" during the year. At noon of each of those days the big bell at Chatauqua rings said, that all true Chatauquans beside what shores soever they my dwell, can hear its distant echoes." That of II. V.

Longfellow occurs on the 17th inst. The literary lecture being on that evening, it will be observed by the Moline students, on Tuesday evening, at the residence of R. Nye, by a programme consisting of quotations and selections from Longfellow's works, and a sketch of his life. More Meat. The latest news from the chicken thieves comes from Stewartville.

A few nights ago a gang of thieves, which are sppposed to be the same that have been operating in this city for some time, made a call at the hennery of Josiah Heck, and it once proceeded in the same manner as tey have been accustomed, to decapitate the inmates of the coop. They had trrived as f-tr as No. 9, when Mr. Heck, vlio had heard the noise, made his appear-mce upon the scene, and the gang scattered without even taking their plunder ilong with them. Mr.

JJecfc had a dinner Sunday. Sure To Go-A letter Innn St Joe. says that "the (acts legardim; ihe nire-t an 1 imprisonment of Nannie McAfee for Ihe stcalitiir of a satchel cutlery from th? I'nion depot in this city arc incontrovertible. While McAfee's fiieiids in their zeal fur his welfare might desire it otherwise, it is matter ot fact that he is still in jal! at this place, and it is only a mat ler of a short time when lie will go to the penitentiary for his crime. The evidence is coav'ciing, and escape is oat of the qucslion." instrumental music, nnl elocution are also taught.

Several schools are designated to examine applicants for admission to the college but I do not notice Rock Island or Jloline on the list. TLe nearest ones seemed to be Peoria, Peru, Otttwa, Sterling and Kcwanec. Candidates who can pass the examination there ara admitted with' out farther examination at Champaign The tuition is free in all university classes, The matriculation fee is ten dollars paya ble in advance and the yearly expenses range from $125.00 to $150.00 consequent ly a bank account of one thousund dollars would see any young man or woman, through a four years course. 1 wish space would permit me going more into detail of what I saw there, but I am constrained to remember that I am only one of many who are taking up space and must there foreclose. G. Mohhis. Death of Mrs Swearingin- Tuesday at 7 o'clock a. occurred the deaili of Mrs. Irene iSwcuringin, at the family residence in East Moline, on Sixth avenue.

Mrs Swearingin was will known in this city, beinir one of the county's oldest residents. The deceased was born in Pleasant Valley, near this city in 1838, and was therefore ulmost forty-six years of age at the time ot her death. At the age of eighteen she iu company with several members ofberfamily moved to issouri. At the age of twenty wus she married at Camden, Missouri, to John Swearingin, and twelve years ago she was made a widow by his death. Two years after her husband's death, Mrs.

Swearingin returned with her family to Moline and has resided here ever since. Four children survive her, all of whom are well known in this city, and are the following: Mrs. Ella Mann, residing in Moline; John Swearingin of Kansas; Inez Swearingin and Willie Swearingin of this city. The cause of the death of the deceased was consumption, and Ler death was not entirely unlooked for. The funer al will take place at the family residence to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, and ihe interment will occur at Riverside Ceme tery.

In the death ot Mrs, Swearingin the family loses a kind and gentle moth er and a careful adviser. An Unfriendly Tip- W. J. Ferguson, the counterfeit dude, gave bis company anything but a friendly tip Friday morning. The combination reached Cairo, Illinois, twenty-four hours after the advertised lime.

The delay was occasioned by the floods, but he proceeded to fill his engagement, Ferguson, out of a spirit of ravengo, refused to let the curtain go up after the house became com foitably filled unless the manager gave him $75. Friday morning the star with his wife and brother-in-law, slipped away from the hotel and boarded the 3 a. iu train ticketed for New York, leaving the balance ot the company stranded a thou sand miles from home without money or friends. Kelly, the monied man and advance agent, was telegraphed at New Orleans the condition of things, and be sent funds for relief. Mr.

Walker, business manager, attributed thecontemptable action of Furguson to a desire to get even with Kelly for abuse which he recieved from that agent at one time in Deuvir. It was Sunday night, $1,200 in the house, and everything in good shape. Suddenly Ferguson notified Kelly that he would noi play Sunday. The money was returned and the audience dismissed, and the dud recieved a merited tongue lashing. New Chapel.

a t.ip to Champaign jiJ UrlMtia, Illinois, on business, my letters to The Dispatch Lave failed to materialize, ami as I leave here on Monday lor Springfield to attend the annual session of the Grand Lodge of Workmen, I tut filed to pen you a few lines to explain matters and things, I lmve not been able to watch the drift flf jnUitie opinion here, and knowing th.it jour dispatches keep you posted on the Derii's doings, the recent murders I Mr tnd Mrs. Wills-n and others, are the usual budgetbut enough of that. While in Champaign I took the oppor-tlinity of isiting the Illinois Industrial University, the school nt which Frank Williams, of Moline. attended. Rock Island is well represented there at present in Ernst Spcidel, who wil' graduate in June next, in chemistry, after ft fie years' course.

His brother Hugo is also a Student in civil engineering and making mpid progress. Both are sons of C. Speidcl, the well known druggist of Rock Island. Ben Allen Block, ion of the late Aaron Block a ward Cf Morris Kosenfield. is also there in his first year.

Ho intends rtmlyinir mechanical engineering with a view of making his life useful as well an Ornamental. Otto Huber and William F-Kendall, of ck Island are on the list of rtudents but 1 did not hate the pleasure of meeting them. Of course your readers will desire to know how students can be admitted there, the requisite qualifications, the cost of board and tuition, and at the risk of making this letter long, I will CDdeiiTor to correct a wrong impression liiat seems to have flown pretty generally from one end of the state the oiher, and lh' is: 1st, that it is not designed as a reformatory institution, that poor boys flon't require and influence.Congressional or otherwise, gain admission, that it is tlie cheapest institute of learning in the Ute, and boys and girls who desire to graduate in the higher branches, and who Jure a little money to spend in that direction should certainly send for the prospectus of this college. And now with this preamble, a brief review will be in orier. Congress granted 480,000 acres of land to endow this school in 18152, the uniTersity was charterel in 1307, and Opened to students in 1808.

In addition $400,000 were donated by Champaign County, in bonds, buildings and farms. The state has made large appropriations to the erection and fitting up of the various bu Idings, and stocking the arm. They have four buildings, two nuin buildings, the mechanical building the drill hall and the chemical laboratory. They now claim to have four colleges, and ten district schools. They have graduated 330 students up to 1883.

The college is situated about halfway between the cities of Champaign and Urbana, ot; hu dred and twenty-eight miles south from Chicago, on the Illinois Central rilrl. i bey have 023 acres, which Itcudoi th lind upon which the college trai din are erected, the stock farm, xp. lt ta mi, or harda, nurseries, lotvs a a.l parade grou ids. The library wing is fir roof and contains 15,000 volumes principally works of reference.

In the library wing are the museum of natural story, the art gallery and tho museum of engineering. The building is Leated by steam from a boiler bouse which forms the fourth side ot the quad rangle in the rear. The mechanical Iriiklmg and Drill liali is of brick 120 fti-t iii length and 88 fi-et iu widUi, well filled and arranged lor the instructions ol the In the bceond story is the drill room 12K80 suitable for instruction iu and- artillery p. met ice. The College owns building? valii'-l at 2 .00 acres of good bind in JUn mta and monies invented principal Iv in funds of To fully complete the good vwik of educating the m.i-HS, the monied men of Illinois should endow it with at least a million dollars, to that the faculty couid pay good salaries t- the professors' and push the college to tho front ra nk, the place it is destined to and that before long. The museum Wid iirt gallery are well worth a visit from those who are called iu that direction. The beautiful model ol lleury L. Gay's monument to King Victor Emanuel of Italy, occupies the center of the museum of engineering and architecture. It was designed to be 300 feet hich and to cost one and a quarter millions of dollars, this design won the second prize in 289 exhU titions, all the plans and drawings have been resented to the university.
