Kirby To Retire June 30 David Lane Named Successor On Police Force (From Mondaj Eagle) LENOX The Board of Selectmen a announced that Officer Joseph Kirb of the Lenox Police Department i retire Thursday June 30 following 36 sears of active service i a i It was also announced a his position will be filled bv David Lane of F-ankhn Street Officer icined the force May 4 1913 following his appointment by a seven-man Boaid of Selectmen The seectmen who made the appointment were John Johnson cha rman Dr Duclos, clerk George Fegi uson Sr William Kirbv Dr Flint William a a a and Thomas Fielding Si Of the original seven-man board a i I he a i onlv Dr Duclose and Mr Fielding are still a i The a i at the i of Officer Kirbj a i was made up of four men i in Ijenox and one in Lenox Dale His fellow officers then i i Dunn Thomas a and John all of have since died Officer Kirbv a life-long resident of was schooled in Lenox in a wooden building i Center School now stands Follow ing the completion of his schooling he was employed bv a on the grounds of i Grace Kuhn's estate His a i at that time was superintendent of the grounds Prior to becoming a member of the police department he was employed as a plumber bv Wil iiam Bull later established Bull Garage Officer Kirbv said the veai he loined the ool'ce force old fashioned helmets were discaided He also added a the onlv piece of equipment they cairied then (but not at piesent) wa 1 a stop watch which was.
