14 National Road Traveler July 20,1977 Doubles champions crowned with heat biggest foe by Rkk Richards Editor The opening week of play in the Fourth Annual National Road Traveler-Western Wayne Tennis Tournament concluded Saturday with doubles champions crowned in tbee divisions. New champions were crowned in Mens, Womens and Mixed Doubles for 1977. In Mens Doubles, the finals dsplayed some of the best tennis of the week as the team of Fred Hall and Dave Leveredge of New Castle won the title over Richmond's Herb Chavis and Steve Davis in three sets. Using strong play at the net, Hall and Leveredge swept the final two sets after losing the opening set in a tie breaker, 7-6. The only Western Wayne entry in the final four, Jim Hersberger and Bob Woodward, were defeated by Chavis-Davis 6-3.

Bills- Zook had to take the final two sets for the title after losing the opening set 6-3. In Womens Doubles, lait year's championship team made the final, but they were on opposite sides of the net this year.

Both Jo Ann Grigsby and Betsy Peckinpaugh reached the finals and that combination had won the two previous women's titles. However, this year, Peckin- pough was teamed up with Elizabeth Wonse'ler and they downed Grigsby and Peggy Grigsby in oppressive early morning heat, 6-1. 7-6. For Peclrnpaugh it was her third straight Woniens Doubles title. Heat was a big factor throughout the week and in some of the longer matches it played a decisive role.

One match lasted two and a half hours to decide the championship of Flight Worn ens Doubles. The team of Jane Hall and Nancy KelLam won over Melanie Coats and Ellen Runyon 6-7. 6-3, 7-6 in the marathon match. For the Mixed Doubles championship, Fred Hall and Jane Hall were going after their second championships of the 1977 tournament against Jim Hersberger and Lynn Downing. Earlier, Hersberger-Downing had defeated the defending champions, Bob Woodward and Peggy Grigsby, 6-2 while Hall-Hail had topped the 1975 champions, BUI Peckinpaugh and Betsy Peckinpaugh, 6-3, 6-4.

Again the heat was a decisive factor as Hall-Hall won by Kitndeal scores of 6-1 in straight sets. In Flight, Vicky Higbie and Robert Bills were champions, winning over Connie Criss and Bruce Lelten, 6-2, 3-6. 6-1. MENS DOUBLES SemMTinab Chavis Davis over Hersberger-Woodward, 6-3, 7-6. (NRT Photo) Opening rounds completed in singles play tennis tournament by Rick Richards Sports Editor Opening round play for singles championships in the National Road Traveler-Western Wayne Tennis Tournament got underway Sunday on the Lincoln High School and Creitz Park courts. During the first two rounds of play, no upsets were recorded. Barbie Karp, the defending champion in the 12 And Under Division drew a first round bye while in Girls Singles, a new champion is guaranteed since Shelley Everett 1975 and 1978 winner, has moved up into Womens Singles.

In Boys Singles, defending champion Ted Rappaport drew a first round bye while in Women's Singles, the same holds true for defending champion Jill Markley of Centerville. In Mens Singles, play is through the second round and both former'winners, Steve Davis in 1976 and Bob Woodward in 1974 and 1975 advanced. Davis topped Ron Homsby in the second round 10-1 while Woodward stopped Will Logan in the second round, 1O-4. Both drew opening round byes. Play will continue through the rest of this week with the championship rounds scheduled for Sunday, July 24 in both A Flight and Flight.
