Smith American Legion Post in 1930, district commander in 1931, was Scoutmaster of the American Legion Boy Scout troop for 22 yean and received the Silver Beaver award in 1948 for his distinguished service to boyhood. He has conducted numerous classes in first aid for civilians as well as state- guard and police forces, helped organize the Henry County Memorial Association and received the Business and Professional Women's award for community service in 1946.
