ALTON CITY last the Democracy of Alton nominated the following ticket: For mayor, L. Pfeiflenberger; treasurer, P. Mitchell; marshal, C'apt. Rutlerhau- scn; register, Frank Ferguson; attorney, J.

W. Coppinger. COMMERCIAL note and letterheads; statements; ledger: and day-books envelopes and cards; in fact, everything in the printing or stationery line used by business men in any form, furnished at the shortest notice and at less than Chicago prices, at the Intelligencer office. AT the Republican congressional convention on Tuesday, F. W.

Wolf of this precinct was nominated foi member of the state board of equalization over I. B. Randle, also of this precinct, and 3Ir. i a was substituted for John H. Yager as elector.

Do you wish to see a man with the form of Apollo and the strengtli of half a dozen ordinary men--a man who in feats of strength would put to shame the athletes of old Home, and rival even Sampson himself? Then visit Sells Brothers' Quadruple Alliance, aud witness the wonderful performances of Mr. George W. Richards. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday the thermometer reached OS' in the shade. This was altogether too hot for any practicable purpose.

The INTELLIGENCER office had to suspend operations most of that tiise, as everything in the office began to assume a liquid form consequently if there is anybody in the country who objects to the quality of our paper this week, they can just go to grass. GRUMBLING AGAIN--There is a great deal of grumbling just now at the street sprinkler, because he only works an hour or so every other day. There ought to be no dissatisfaction in regard to this matter, for we are in formed that Mr. Schafler does not intend to charge anything for this present mouth--he is merely making up for his deficiency" heretofore. SUDDEN Schaer, a saloon keeper who carried on business on St.

Louis street opposite the courthouse, died very suddenly about seven o'clock Monday evening. He had attended to his business as usual during the day, aud up to within half an hour of his death nothing appeared to be the matter with him. He then complained of feeling unwell, and went up stairs over the saloon aud laid down. In a few minutes he rapped on the floor for the bar-keeper to bring him a glass of beer. This he drank, and shortly after rapped for another glass, but before the bar-tender reached him he was dead.

It is supposed that the intense heat- and drink caused his death. lEWSFAPERl The Collinsvillc Anger at Work. CYRUS L. COOK was placed in nomination in the Republican county convention last Friday for county attorney, and was defeated by W. F.

L. Hadley. Two or three weeks ngo this same Cook wanted the Democratic nomination for the legislature. AH he desired was the assurance that he would get the nomination on the Democratic aud Liberal ticket, aud then he would flop right over. His reasons for coming over, outside of the consideration of oflice, were good and sufficient.

One reason was that he could not consistently support Grant on account of his intemperance. Cook, like many other men ambitious for office, was willing to take a i even on the Grant i He got what he deserved. The Grant party men of Madison county tnet in convention, at the court-house, on Friday last, for the purpose of nominating a county ticket, etc. Mr. McPike of Alton opened the performance.

The curtain didn't rise until nearly noon, as the management thought it expedient to wait for an audience; but the audience didn't come. Mr. Baker of Alton was appointed temporary chairman, but before he had fairly reached the stand Dr. Weir made a motion. Some one suggested to the doctor that lie had better wait until a secretary was appointed.

But the doctor was in such a terrible to have the first say that he heeded not the gentle hint, but with his right hand elevated, he reiterated "Mr. Chairman, I move," Ac. During the confusion, the Fat Boy of the poor old resurrected Gillespie penny whistle newspaper concern in the basement was requested to act as secretary. The Fat Boy, who was covering a large surface of imitation oak, did not rightly comprehend what was going on, and remained quiet. A friend near by, i a gentle shake, told him that he had been requested to act as secretary.

But the Fat Boy thought that he was asked to make a speech. So he waddled up to the stand with his eyes half closed, saying as he went along, Gentlemen of the convention, I am cot prepared to make a speech; but if you will wait till after dinner will show you one of the linest apple dumplings you ever seen. I have His discourse was interrupted right here, and his discovery will be made at some future day when the weather is cooler. The chairman leaned forward and whispered to him that he was required to act as secretary; so the Fat Boy dropped into his seat, his face very red and large drops of perspiration oozing from every pore of his intellectual countenance. Committees on perma- neutorgnnizaUon and credentials were appointed, and the convention adjourned till half-past one.

The convention reassembled at the appointed time, aud the committees made their reports. The audience was somewhat larger in the afternoon--the Democrats and Liberals, displaying their usual generosity, i out in force, so as to make the affair look as respectable as possible. John M. Pearson of Monticello was appointed permanent president, with four vice-presidents to assist him. The committee on credentials made tbe announcement that the precincts of Highland, Looking Glass, Madison and New Douglas were not represented, and that many of the delegations were not full.

Wheu the president took the cbiiir he called upon the vice-presidents to divide the honors with him. As delegates were scarce, it was suggested by au Alton member that the vicc- presideuts keep their seats, as they would be wanted to vote for candidates for office. So the vice-presidents kept their seals on the floor. Several negroes had scats in the con vention, but it was observable that they had plenty of room to themselves. Every once in a while Mr.

Neustadt, of Collinsville, would gain the iloor. He would jabber away at a fearful rate about something, but no one in the room could understand a word he was saying. Years ago Newstadt received the name of auger, from his own party friends. On this occasion he bored so incessantly that the few members present would involuntarily change their seats whenever they saw Neustadt get upon his pins, for fear that they would be the individual object to be operated upon. The nominations resulted as follows: For state senate, John H.

Yager. For representatives, T. J. Rarney, of Collinsville, Anthony Beck, of Saline. For circuit clerk, J.

D. Heisel, of Edwardsville. For sheriff, JAS. T. Cooper, For coroner, J.

H. Streeper, of Upper Alton. For county attorney, W. F. L.

Hadley of Edwardsville. Take the convention altogether, it was one of the weakest affairs ever held in Edwardsville. There was no enthusiasm whatever. The couven tion seemed to nominate men for office with the conviction that they were patting them up to be slaughtered. Which is correct.
