The Senate committee has, however, recommended tkat all the present stock oi clothing shall be used up, and that the new uniforms dial! not be purchased until the old ones arc exhausted. Mr.

Stevens made sume very periinent remarks in thu House of Kepresen- tatsves, at Wash ngton, on the ult. From the JJaily Globe we U'ke the following extracts from his -ech. Speaking of the Illinois river says: "This river is especially adapted for navigation, very direct in its course, and having not more than two inches to mile fall for considerable purl of its length. I cannot give a better description of it than to quote from the Historical collection of Louisiana the language oi Sieur one of the early French explorers, who accompanied Fathers LaSalle and Jk-nnepiu in their voyage up the St. Lawrence, through the great lakes, and down the Father of Waters.

Each of them gave their names to thriving cities upon the banks of the Illinois. Sieur Joliet writes as iollows 'I, witii Father Mnrquette, theu asccuiltd the river with great difficulty sjaiiiBt ihe smrreut, aud left it iu Uutudc thirty eiglit dejreas north, to euter au- stbtr rjver, llliuoU, which took us to the of tliu lIliHOit, C.Michigan,) wkicn is much tiltortur way than the rivir Menacuiiaiu, (WiBCOubtii,) by which we eutured the Mississippi. 1 never sarr a more beautiful cuuutry tliau we t'ouud on i.bi« rirer. The prairies are covered with buffaloes, stags aud deer, and i rivura and lakes with minus, ducks, geeaa, paro- quets, aud bearer. The river upon which ire sailed wua wide, deep uud placid for sixty-fiva Icfegucri, aud navigable most of the year round.

There is a portage of onlj half a league iuto th lalte of the Illi- noii, At the mouths of Miinll creeks entering the Illinois, bars of gravel and sand are formed, which for some mouths in dry seasons obstruct the navigation. The General Government has by its engineers surveyed and classified these bara, aud has proceeded to remove them, so as to give four feet depth at low water removing first those causing the greater obstruction. Unless the work is continued, hat done ie in part lost. Co mplete ihe work and the Illinois becomes one of the most important commercial thoroughfares in the United State. There is not a trans-Mississ- ippi Btate this side of the Rooky mountains and south of Minnesota but will save in the reduction of the price of freight each year more than the amount of this appropriation.

The State of Illinois has expended upon this work $3, 000,000 within the last three years, and all I ask ii this small appropriation to clean out the bars in the lower part of the river in order to make it the baat navigable stream in the United States. It has been said that the "gods Kelp those who help themselves." I trust that the members of this House will in future follow a maxim, so true." We are happy to state that the eum of $100,000 has now been voted ky both Houses for the improTe- of the Illinois rirer. This item stood at $50,000 last week. a good thing, but the Treasury will be that much better --The Hock Island Union says it has received a call from a Mr. Abbey of Scott county, Iowa, who er- hibited two specimens of copper ore, of eighty per eent purity, which he discovered a mile and a half south-west cf Blue Grass, the smaller in a crevice of a rock, and the larger, which weighs three pounds, in a wagon rut on the road.

Mr. Abbey is an old and experienced miner and lias a battery of pcciilar construction for tracing mineral veins, their general direction, sizu and also their extent. After a careful observation he lias become satisfied that there are extensive veins or pockets of copper running east and west and extending across the Mississippi into that city, especially the lower paVt, and to Hock Itiver. He believes ii' company with snlh'cient capital could be organized, that extensive mineral discoveries would be made which would greatly stimulate our i trial trade. arc to all who send at one time, for Uieuiidvea or otUen, Are Publications.
