OYV By JOEL POILEY Tribune Sports Writer TAMPA The frustration of playing on losing teams and for four coaches in four years has taken its toll on Tampa Prep center fielder Keith Hutchinson. But Hutchinson has turned a negative situation into a positive, for both himself and the team.

Entering Tuesday's game against Bradenton Christian, Hutchinson needed one stolen base to break the state record of 136 held since 1986 by Eddie Carter of Jacksonville Terry Parker. "It bothers me at times because we're so inexperienced," Hutchinson said Monday after failing to break the record against St. Petersburg Shorecrest. "But I know the other guys are trying. "The record means a lot to me, though, because being on a weak team, I've had to set more personal goals to help us win.

If it's stealing a base, getting a hit, or pitching a couple innings, it all helps the team. "But if I don't get it, I don't get it." Monday's 14-2 loss was the Terrapins' 14th in 16 games. It was also only the second game this season Hutchinson didn't steal a base. He singled leading off the first inning, but Shorecrest catcher Dennis Burns pitched out and nailed Hutchinson at second base. Hutchinson walked in the third, but a runner on second prevented him from stealing.

Living near Dunedin High School, which has a good baseball program, the hour ride back and forth to Tampa Prep gives Hutchinson time to reflect on his choice of schools. "I know I could play for a big school like Dunedin (Class 4A)," he Tribune photograph by JIM REED Tampa Prep's Keith Hutchinson needed one stolen base, entering Tuesday's game against Bradenton Christian, to break the state record of 136 held by Eddie Carter of Terry Parker. "He's one of the few kids we've got like that. "He's much better than a 1A player. He's disciplined, loves to play and is a great kid to teach." Hutchinson said he plans to attend Auburn, where he'll try to make the baseball team as a walk-on a difficult task at a Division I school.

"I'll go there and sweep the dugouts and carry everyone's bag the first year," he said, smiling about typical drudgery incurred by all freshmen. "But by the time I'm a junior or senior, I think I can play there." said. "But I wouldn't get the education like I have here. I know in the long run that's more important." Hutchinson's path to tying the state record started as a freshman, when he stole 46 bases as primarily a pinch runner. He followed with 26 steals as a sophomore, 37 as a junior and has 27 this year.

His .951 percentage (136-for-143) is testimony to his knowledge of the game and ability to reach base. After Monday, he was hitting .358 (14-for-39) with an on-base percentage slightly under .500. Sacrifice Salomone faces some difficulty planning race TAMPA Tony Salomone is trying to do something that's been difficult around here lately. He wants to hold a road race this summer, with the proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. The local road racing community has been in the doldrums lately. Small crowds have been showing up to some of the bigger events. Add to this Salomone has never organized a race of any kind before.

Never. "I realize there's people out there that's been doing this a lot longer than me," Salomone said. "But I'm willing to do what ever it takes to do this." Considering Salomone won't make a nickel on this venture, why would he want to go through all the troubles of putting on a race? The answer is simple. His father, Anthony Michael Salomone, died of cancer April 19, 1988. He was 64 but still working with the same energy he had when he was 40.

His wife of many years, Mary, is the same way. And the Salomone family, who moved to Tampa several years ago from Ohio, are close. When the father found out he didn't have much time to live, he left the hospital and went home. He wanted to die surrounded by family, not nurses and doctors. "He and I were pretty close," Salomone said.

"He worked up 'til just a few weeks before he died." Salomone said that the Cancer Society was a big help to his family, and he would like to do something to help them help others. So, when he's not driving all over the Tampa Bay area as a power equipment representative, Salomone is thinking of ways to hold a road race. He said he really doesn't care if it makes that much money the first time. He wants to make this an annual race on or around his late father's July birthday. "If it's a small turnout the first time, that's OK," Salomone said.

"If nothing else, I'll get the name out there and get my foot in the door. It definitely will be an annual thing." But he's already finding out that the road racing business involves more than drawing a start and finish line. He has a list of area race directors, like Millard Shumate of the Bayshore Runners Club, Gary McMath of Suncoast Runners Club, Jack Houghteling of the Jogging Center and Bob Braman at the University of South Florida. Most of the people he's talked to have told him about the high costs of things like insurance, traffic control, T-shirts, food, beverages and awards. And some of them tell him it's a risky venture these days.

"And with all those other diseases and causes out there, the Cancer Society seems to have moved down on people's priority list," Salomone said. "It's a tough sell." Still, Salomone, who has recently gotten serious about running again and also takes part in several triathlons each year, pushes on just like his dad would do, he said. He is looking for potential sponsors to help out with the race costs and is considering several ideas to try and make his race stand out among all the others. "Right now, I'm mainly trying to narrow down it down to a time and a place," Salomone said. "But the more I get into it, the more I realize there's a lot of other details to take care of." But knowing Salomone's enthusiasm and energy and his love for his father, something tells you he will somehow put all the pieces together.

"I just want to do something to help the Cancer Society," Salomone said. MEAT Block, 3O'x40' 16" thick, authentic, solid maple $300; antique hall tree $200; Hobart cable spinet piano $400. All exc. shape. 752-3395 MISCELLANEOUS In The Area Champ, bl.

Unknown to Paschal, Daniels enrolled at USF, under a non-degree seeking classification, then approached Paschal about becoming a Bull. Daniels needs to get his academics in order before he could be considered for a scholarship, Paschal said. Since Southwestern gave him a release, Daniels could get a scholarship for the 1989-90 year, but won't get one even if he is eligible, Paschal said. Daniels does intend to practice with the team, Paschal said. He could get a scholarship for the 1990-91 season.
